Comments: I've been here several times and the food and

Comments: I spent one of the best
birthdays ever with a few of my dearest friends at
Country by the Sea Tea Room.
When you first walk into the shop you go into a
lovely antiques/gift shop and downstairs there are
several rooms of antiques. To the far left and in
the rear of the shop is the tearoom with all its
charm. It is located within walking distance of
the New Jersey shore in the charming village of
Avon-by-the-Sea. All employees were very
friendly. The owner, Renee, is fantastic -- she
makes you feel as though you were family.
Excellent service. I was disappointed that there
were no scones. But their iced tea sure made up
for it. Even though the tea was not loose it
really didn't matter; it was prepared and served
just right. I highly recommend the Sunday
brunch (reservations are a must).
A lovely tearoom with all the charm that goes with
tea.

Comments: Afternoon Tea at The Twinings Tea Room
located in the restored 1876 Carriage House on the
grounds of The Emlen Physick Estate, Cape May’s only
Victorian house museum. All income from the Twinings
Tearoom supports the cultural and education mission of
the Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts (MAC), a not-for-profit
organization.
We each chose our tea from their selection of Twinings teas and each received a mini pot full of tea. We
enjoyed their Classic Tea Room Luncheon including the
pot of tea, assorted tea breads and scones, soup or
salad, and choice of four different sandwich selections,
and dessert. I chose chicken salad, cucumber with
Twinings herbal mint tea cream cheese, egg salad with
garden chives, and smoked turkey with roasted asparagus and truffle mayonnaise. The food was all
good and we enjoyed our visit to the tea room. Within
the Carriage House there is also a beautiful gift shop
filled with tea related gifts, books, jewelry, and more.
After this we drove to town to catch the trolley tour.
(You could stay and tour the Physick Estate for a very
unique experience including your tea and the Victorian
estate tour, or do as we did and take the trolley tour to
include the estate tour.)
A unique tea and tour experience!

Comments: I had tea here as part of a
tour group with the Midatlantic Center for the
Arts. We had about thirty people. We were offered
tea, lemonade, iced tea, or water. My friend was
disappointed that they did not serve coffee, as
she does not drink tea and did not want a cold
beverage. I was very disappointed that they had no
loose tea at all, just some teabags (all Twinings)
on the table, and only one of each type. I had to
steal a second bag of Darjeeling from another
table. The scones, as mentioned previously, were
very small, but delicious, and did come with
clotted cream and jelly. The sandwiches and tea
breads were also delicious -- but small. We were
served a nice green salad to start and a yummy
custard for dessert. The ambiance was very nice.
Overall, a pleasant meal with very good service,
even though the tea wasn't what I had hoped.

Comments: The Elegant Afternoon Tea
($13.50) provides an enjoyable respite to the
weary vacationer. With limited seating inside and
the majority of seating outside under the garden
patio tent, the atmosphere is unique. The tea
service shows room for improvement, but was a
pleasant experience. We tasted blueberry bread and
also piña colada bread, both very moist and
tasty. The raisin scones, small and hard, are best
not eaten. We were served a generous portion of
cream for the scones and bread, no jelly however.
The sandwiches, all triangular, were served on a
variety of fresh breads. The fillings included
chicken salad, shrimp, ham salad, egg salad, and
goat's cheese. They were all very tasty. Listed as
'pastries' on the menu, we were served individual
cups of bread pudding with a few blueberries
garnishing the plate. I would have preferred a
selection of 'pastries.' The tea is limited to a
chest full of Twinings tea bags. You are provided
a teapot of hot water and allowed to choose your
tea bag. Iced tea (the choice was green tea the
day we were there, mint was the selection the day
before) or lemonade is also provided. In addition,
our hostess graciously provided water as the heat
was overwhelming. Occasional ocean breezes
provided pleasant relief as we enjoyed afternoon
tea 'al fresco.' The adjacent gift shop sells
Twinings teas, and also has a nice selection of
tea related books, jewelry, teapots, and more.

selection -- extremely limited, no Devon (clotted)
cream or jam for our quarter size scones. Six
sandwich quarters, four slices of tea bread, two
scones, two rice puddings and six cookies for
$13.95 each. Setting was okay would be better if
they offered napkins. Geared for tourists viewing
the Physick Estate. Felt like they were trading on
the Twining Tea name. The waiter was their only
saving grace; he was great.

point is: Don't go there hungry and for $12.95 per

$15.95 per and includes a salad or soup and all of

seated and completely ignored for over 20 minutes. After that
we just got up and left, there wasn't even anyone who cared to
say goodbye on our way out. The occasion before that we
felt a somewhat ignored and figured it must have just been the server
on that day - I guess we were wrong. The food choices feel
limited the tea is good and they have some good dessert
choices. Worth the high price and having to fight to be served
just so you can provide them business? No. I feel like they've

she returned & said "I didn't know the owner was here. I
don't want her to see me giving you scones!" Said I
didn't care about scones, I just wanted owner to be
aware. Repeated my story. Owner spat, "Go get a job in
a restaurant, then you'll be more understanding!" Told
me that it was my fault we hadn't been served, because
we weren’t there when the waiter had finally arrved (after
over 30 mins) Have never met an owner who didn't at
least pretend to care whether patrons enjoyed their stay

receiving poor service! No one deserves what this owner

Comments: My friend and I went to Sally Lunn's to
enjoy tea - however it seems that they do not serve tea
before 2pm so we had lunch. The food (cornish pasty
and broccoli cheese melt) was vary tasty but the tea
was a disappointment. There was a fairly good selection
of teas to choose from, but as it was prepared loose in
the pot the tea started out bitter and only got worse.
Most unusually, neither one of us were able to finish a
single pot of tea! The was more than enough food - so
much so that neither of us could eat any of the attractive dessert offerings, so we selected some to go
home for later. Truly delicious!! Although the building
and rooms were charming they were overshadowed by the dust and clutter that
reigned supreme. As another reviewer mentions "You Break it, You Bought it" signs
abounded which does not add to the graciousness of
the overall experience. Also, on this day the front door
was propped open which resulted in a large group of
flies "sharing" our food with us - not at all appetizing.

Comments: I have been to this Sally
Lunn's several times and always enjoy myself. The ambiance is
charming and it is a fun
place to go, but I do agree with one of the other reviewers who said that the
place felt cluttered. They have teacups, teapots, and paintings
everywhere
for sale in the dining area, so you do feel as
if you have to walk gingerly around
the place as not to break anything. They do have a nice gift shop for buying
imported English items.
The afternoon tea selection is good and
surprisingly filling. Each person gets tea sandwiches (two
cucumber, two egg, and one
salmon) and a large scone (it is rather large and
quite tasty) and tea. The tea has always been good
when I have visited there; however, I do feel as if they
scrimp a little bit on the amount they give you. Additionally, if someone
with you orders the same kind of tea, they only give you one pot of tea, not
two
individual ones as you would receive were each to
order different kinds of tea.
They will give you additional hot water upon request.
I have tried some of their other menu items and
they were quite nice. Overall, I would give Sally
Lunn's a B. The afternoon tea menu is always the
same (they don't have a rotating sandwich
selection), but at least you know what to expect
when you arrive).
They also do not take reservations, so if you are
going on a Saturday or
lunchtime during the week, it is completely
jammed! If you can, it is better
to go during the week at an off-peak time.

Comments: My best advice when visiting
Sally Lunn's is skip the afternoon tea selection
and order the various luncheon items off the menu.
They offer Cornish Pastie, Tiddy Oggi, Cockney
Pie, and Broccoli Swiss Melt in addition to daily
specials. We enjoyed the Broccoli Swiss Melt. The
afternoon tea selection included tiny finger
sandwiches (egg salad, cucumber, and tuna all
served on whole wheat bread), a scone, and a pot
of tea. Our iced tea and hot tea were both bitter.
The first cup of hot tea was bitter, and since the
leaves were allowed to continue steeping in the
pot, subsequent cups were the same. Sally Lunn's
provides a nice stop for lunch in a community full
of specialty shops. They also offer loose leaf tea
and tea related items to purchase.

than enough for us both. The fresh, warm scones were
a hit with us all. Granddaughter luxuriated in the
Princess tea with her own teapot filled with her choice
of tea from the extensive and quite descriptive menu.
The other two selected teas were delicious. We were
not rushed, even though we stayed much longer than
we'd imagined.

The bride was absolutely thrilled. BUT I WOULD CAUTION
AGAINST HOSTING AN EVENT THERE - THE OWNER WAS RUDE AND COOL IN HER
RECEPTION. She had an issue with us, but chose to give us the cold shoulder rather than discussing it
professionally. I would agree with what everyone else's

The place is very cute - with a Victorian, old charm feel
to it. There was an abundance of teapot and hat decors.
The staff was especially helpful. The food was FABULOUS -
very tantalizing to eat; and there is lots of it through the courses. Be careful, though, if hosting a
Bridal Shower. We received some cold vibes from the
owner at the end of our reception. We were well within
the 2 hour + 1/2 hour setup + 1/2 hour cleanup window.
Definitely give this place a visit if you've never been :)

Comments: My mom, sister, and I just visited
Teaberry's for the first time today and we were very
pleased. It's located in a quaint part of town in a lovely
old victorian home. The decor was very nice--elegant,
but not fussy or overdone. We enjoyed lunch--soup,
sandwiches and salads. They offer a nice variety on the
lunch menu and the food was delicious. They also boast
about 50 flavors of teas and each one we tried was very
tasty. The scones (the most important part, IMO!) were
delicious. They only had plain and currant today and we
had plain. The accompanying Devonshire cream and curd/jam were very good, as well.
There is a cute little gift shop in the front of the teahouse.
Make a day of it & have tea at Teaberry's and then shop the local stores!

Comments: Being
that this café calls itself a “tea room”, I
was extremely disappointed. I was hoping for a
typical afternoon tea including a pot of tea,
finger sandwiches, scone, and desserts. The tea
came in a worn two-cup teapot with a tea bag in
it. The “sandwiches” were terrible. Literally
a half sandwich of each, two pieces of bread with
one slice of ham and cheese and turkey and cheese
cut into smaller sizes. The scone was hard as a
rock and when I asked for preserves I was brought
a packet of strawberry preserves (like you would
see in a diner). The dessert “assortment”
consisted of about three tiny desserts, none of
which seemed very fresh. The atmosphere is bland
and the service was fair to poor. I don’t see
how this café survives, except that tourists who
shop in Flemington must frequent it. I was
disgusted that this “tea room” makes
absolutely no attempt to serve a traditional tea
service.

Comments: We found Kathy's after the Upper Crust because a
Pakistani restaurant. Our reservations were for high
[sic] tea for two. The setting is inside an antique shop, and you can pick
your tea service from the collection or have them select for you.
Kathy was very warm and inviting, and was welcoming to our
toddler daughter (not all tea houses are), and she even gave us
extra bread for our little one. The tea list has both traditional
and inventive brews - the strawberry tea was excellent. Next
time I’ll try the maple tea perhaps. The food was excellent,
highlighted with fresh breads, scones, fruit, and finger
sandwiches in a traditional 3 tier service. The lobster bisque
was made with the hint of sherry that foodies will love.
I'm not sure where "Debbie" went, but it certainly does not resemble
Kathy's; perhaps it was another tea house? Anyway, Kathy's
was a very nice high [sic] tea, and we will be back.

I and my 2 daughters to tea at this cozy tearoom. We were delighted to be greeted with such
hospitality and friendliness. This tea room’s menu of teas is
extensive. Kathy was very knowledgeable about the types of tea.
We were served our teas and delicious scones with clotted cream
and jams within 20 minutes of our arrival. While we waited for our
tea sandwiches, quiche, fruit and desserts to arrive, we were happy
to browse through the antique shop, which is filled with all sorts of
things that brought lots of memories back to us. Our tea meal was
served in pretty antique place settings that made us feel
special. The sandwiches were all freshly made with creativity and delicious.
The desserts were out of this world since they are imported from
Italy. Kathy’s quiche was the best! The waitress was very attentive
to our needs and checked with us often to see if we needed
anything. This tearoom surely did take us back to the days of tea
with Grandma!

downhill and we were very disappointed the last 2 years, to the
point we are checking into other tea rooms. The food is tasty
but started out plentiful and as each year went by became

Comments: Again, I know what an English afternoon tea is
suppose to be like. The tea was served loose which is
appropriate, but it was such a finely ground tea that half of it slipped thru the
strainer into my tea cup! The food is skimpy - only 5 tea
sandwiches w/ afternoon tea, not the typical 8. The scone very
small. Also, only had Equal or sugar. No other substitues which
resulted in me drinking my tea unsweetened. Did not serve extra
hot water for diluting, no milk or lemon served or even offered. The
china was pretty and the children's tea (though only served 3 tea
sandwiches instead of 4) was cute.

to eat off of the two-tiered service plates, which made it
awkward when choosing a sandwich or trying to eat the
small sampling of quiche. Also, we had no idea what
was in the sandwiches, as the waitstaff left after

the atmosphere is charming. It also helps that a friend

Comments: I’ve been to Belamari many times and the food
and service is always excellent. These women know tea. I’ve
been to a few other tea houses in the area and nothing
compares to the overall experience that I have had at
Belamari. The scones are delicious, as is the soup offerings. The space
is very quaint; it’s a great little oasis in the downtown
Hawthorne area.

Comments: My family and I absolutely ADORE this place.
We come once a year to celebrate milestones--in fact we're
going again this month to celebrate a baby! The scones are
the best I've had in New Jersey. The tea is always hot
(unlike at the uber-expensive Pierre Hotel in NYC, where
your tea is tepid). The sandwiches are delicious--I alwas find
myself eating the salmon despite the fact that I say I don't
like salmon! The service is so friendly and homey and
informative. And I never leave without picking up a little
gift -- their prices are very reasonable, and a three-tier dessert
tray I bought there was the hit of a bridal shower I attended.

ONE waitress in the shop even brought our tea pots

cold sandwhiches for goodness sake. I saw a "help wanted sign" in front of the shop last time I walked by. I
hope they have a new waitress or at least an additional

creating a tiny little oasis and it certainly shows! Every detail has been
thoughtfully considered, from the decor to the tea
cozies to the perfect little finger sandwiches. We had
gone for the afternoon tea, which was excellent! The
food was carefully presented and delicious. I had gone

the types of tea I drink, however nothing still quite
matches up to tea from Belamari.

I've have been greeted by the pleasant hostess and
also have received visits from the chef to ensure

enjoy the class that they offered as a part of
National Tea Month and found it to be informative

have a splendid assortment of teas and baked

Comments: I had the pleasure of visiting
Belamari Tea Room in Hawthorne on February 11,
2005 for their full afternoon tea.
Reservations are required for afternoon tea
which includes an assortment of finger sandwiches;
fresh baked scones served with lemon curd, cream,
and preserves; mini desserts; and a pot of tea.
Daily luncheon selections are also
available.
This was a fun, delicious experience.
When asked what tea we would like, we were
offered a tray of little sniffing jars to help us
decide which tea to choose.
Tea selections included a varied list of
blacks, oolong, greens, and herbals. The tea room is decorated very nicely. I met the owners at a recent tea expo and I was thrilled to see all
their hard work has paid off.
They have really done their homework to
learn about tea and the proper way to serve.
The tea room is lovely, the food is
delicious, the tea is delicious, and they also
have a nice selection of merchandise for sale. Afternoon
tea food selections may change periodically, but
my friend and I enjoyed fresh, hot plain and
strawberry scones, cucumber sandwiches, egg salad
sandwiches, dill chicken salad in pastry cups,
cinnamon raisin nut bread with strawberry cream
cheese, pecan bars, key lime bars, chocolate dream
cupcakes, a mini cheesecake, and fruit.
Needless to say we were pleasantly full
when we left. My favorites?
Perfect scones are always my favorite
especially since I love clotted cream, jam, and
lemon curd. And,
the scones WERE perfect.
The cinnamon raisin nut bread with the
strawberry cream was wonderful and unique — I
could see this as becoming one of their signature,
yummy selections. Well,
ALL the desserts were wonderful as well.
Rich, tasty, and delicious.
Everything was perfect and I enjoyed our
visit completely.

Comments: The loose teas are sometimes
very good and sometimes not. I think this is
because they store the teas in glass jars and
there's a big front window. The store smells like
coffee when you walk in. (I like the smell of
coffee unless I'm going to drink tea, and this is
a store, not a tea room so they don't serve tea.).
There are some good packaged teas. Prices are good
for the loose teas.

Tea: Excellent. Food: Poor. Service: Poor. Appearance:

Comments: What a disappointment. Stale, thick, cold
sandwiches (apparently made the day before and refrigerated),
out-of-a-box commercial pastries, strange scones. The tea
itself was excellent, and they really did serve Denvonshire
cream. But the service was unbelievably bad -- the server was
sullen, uncommunicative, clumsy, and completely thrown by
the fact that our reservation for 4 was mistakenly listed as a
reservation for 3. Apparently the Chauncy makes up the
sandwiches and scones for Saturday guests in advance, and
there were no more available for our 4th. Also, apparently no
one at the Chauncy has actually ever gone to a real
English tea, so they've got the look right but not the menu. Onion and
bacon sandwiches, lox on the cucumber sandwiches, kalamata
olive tapanade in the cream cheese and olive sandwiches, no
raisin or currant scones, only blueberry. Not what we were
looking for when we made reservations for a traditional (and
expensive) English high [sic] tea.

Comments: The setting was nice; however, the fabric hanging
from the ceiling was badly in need of cleaning as it was full of
insects. The gift shop was also in need of a cleaning. The food
was unappetizing, very heavy scones, which took a long time
to serve, as they had not baked enough for our group's reservation.
The desserts seemed a frozen variety from the local
grocer, and we were lucky if we got two cups of tea served throughout the
meal, as the staff couldn't keep up with our group
and didn't leave pots at our tables. I felt very bad for our hostess, but she should
have requested our money back as we had to pay to reserve the
room for our group on top of the cost of the tea.

Comments: This tea room is in a truly
lovely "Lavender and Lace" Victorian
house which also houses a florist and gift shop
crammed with special things. The tea room itself
is quite small, but very elegant. I am not
educated enough to discuss the finer points of the
tea, but I really thought the blends were superb.
I had the Victorian Garden -- a floral tea blend
-- and Her Majesty's Tea, a strong, flavorful
black tea. I would recommend both. The list of
teas and the menu were quite impressive.
However ... the tea was served loose in the pots
without an infuser, which means that the flavor of
the first cup was wonderful and of subsequent
cups, horrible. The scones were rubbery (obviously
frozen and then heated in a microwave). The other
pastries were still partially frozen and of
mediocre quality. The sandwiches were delicious,
except for the sand in my chicken salad. I
sincerely regretted not being able to finish it,
as it really was delicious and fresh.
The waitress seemed to be a floral shop worker who
had been recruited to serve, and was
inappropriately dressed and quite overwhelmed with
just two tables. She was very friendly and did her
best, though.
With better training for the staff and some
improvement in the food preparation and
ingredients, this could really be an excellent tea
room. It is still worth stopping by for a cuppa
and a browse in the shop. A great place to buy
Victorian and tea paraphernalia. I noticed the
floral arrangements were stunning as well and
would recommend the florist.

seemingly lack of interest in serving on the part
of the waitress. The tea and food (once served)

to admire and for taking home! I will definitely
be returning often for my little slice of an

Comments: I have visited this tea room several times,
and while I am usually pleased with the food/service, the
last 2 visits the OWNER was unpleasant. Once when trying to make a reservation,
she is very curt, as if she doesn't need your business. Last visit, there was an
ingrediant missing from my tea sandwich,(chives) and
she did not offer any apology, said it was deliberate,
that it depended on the produce delivery. She also wore
loud, clunky shoes in and out of the room several times.
My friends and I find the tea room lovely but the owner
needs an overhaul.
Would you go back? Maybe.

Comments: The crab quiche was the best I ever had.
However the tea -- the reason one goes to a tea
room -- was dreadful. I ordered Breakfast tea which was billed
as hearty, but it was pale and tepid. Even after steeping
throughout the meal it was as pale and inspid as dishwater. However I loved the tea room
otherwise. The next time I visit I will ask that they make the tea
stronger.
Would you go back? Hope so, but we don't live nearby.

with my mother and my daughter and had made
reservations, but we were not told that we had to
make specific requests/reservations for high [sic]
tea and the children's tea. Our reservations were
for 1:00pm and we arrived to find that
"afternoon tea" is not served until
after 2.30pm. Fortunately, the waitress did
accommodate us for afternoon tea. However, you did
not get an assortment of sandwiches; you had to
pick one kind. For $10.95 you had one small pot of
tea, four tiny sandwiches, and one scone. The
cream tasted like jar brand and the tea list did
not distinguish between bag tea or loose leaf. The
menu was pure English and maybe it is better for
just lunch.

Comments: Being avid tea room addicts, we
couldn't wait to try our luck at Mulberry's. We
were disappointed to learn, however, that
"tea" needed advance notice. We don't
always plan ahead but we did in this case and were
very pleased with our experience a few days later.
The tea sandwiches were plentiful, fresh, and
tasty although they consisted mainly of a salad of
some sort (egg, tuna, chicken). The scones were
good but you had to make a choice between a scone
or a dessert or pay more for one or the other. The
lemon bar, I'm not sure of the correct name for
it, was very good, as was a caramel chocolate
shortbread bar which was delicious. They have
white tea at extra cost which was very good. The
strength of the brew varies however. And if memory
serves me correctly, they have actual Devon
(clotted) cream. We highly recommend Mulberry's
but remember to call ahead the day before.

even helped us look for my grandmother's diamond ring she
lost somewhere in the store. Luckily, it was found on the floor

Comments: This tearoom is exactly what you would
imagine a tearoom should be. I was one of about fifteen
ladies who gathered for our annual holiday party. From
the moment I walked through the door, I was treated
like royalty. The Vintage Rose is located in the Millville
Arts District. It is one of a variety of shops that have
popped up in this revitalized strip of turn of the century
buildings. I mention this, because the building lends
itself to the charm of tearoom. It is a long, relatively
narrow shop with every inch put to good use between
the serving area and wares for sale on quaint hutches
and non-assuming displays. The decor is cozy and welcoming, yet elegant. The tea was served in a six
cup pot with a lovely tea cozy. The delicate teacups &
saucers were beautiful! The hostess poured the first
cup, and offered your desired amount of raw sugar
cubes. I tried a new almond/coconut blend that had
recently arrived. It sounded interesting, and I wasn't
disappointed! I thought that the coconut flavor might
overpower it, but this wasn't the case. It had a lovely,
fruity yet creamy taste that I attributed to the almond. I
have been craving that tea since my visit and I can't
find it anywhere! Before our tiers of goodies were
brought out, our hostesses appeared with what appeared at first glance to be champagne in fluted
glasses. What I thought was champagne, turned out to
be a blend of green tea (which may have been flavored,
I forgot to ask)and seltzer water. Each glass was graciously set before us. It was quite tasty, and
enabled the host of our group to stand and make a
toast in honor of our celebration. Next came the food.
Triple tiers were delivered to our table with a variety of
finger sandwiches, consisting of egg salad, cucumber
& cream cheese and a particularly tasty smoked
salmon mousse. There were thin sugar cookies, mini
rose-shaped chocolate cakes and other confections.
My favorite by far, were the scones~or should I say,
the absolutely delicious lemon curd and clotted cream
that accompanied the scones! Yum-mee!! As great as
the food and tea are at the Vintage Rose, what stands
out the most to me is the service. They kept things
moving, while being very graceful with the service.

Comments: Everything about this tea room says

tea selection was excellent. We tried a brand new
arrival, chocolate strawberry tea. I am not usually a fan
of flavored teas, but this was a nice, full bodied black
tea with "just right" chocolate and strawberry flavor.
Highly recommended! The tea sandwiches, desserts and scones were all fresh and delicious and served with
small garnishes of fresh flowers on each tier. The
atmosphere is relaxing, and the shop has lots of interesting tea-related gifts and cards for after-tea
browsing. (as well as any of the loose teas on the menu
for purchase). There are many special events from Murder Mystery Tea to Breast Cancer Fund Raising
Teas to children's "Read to me" tea. An imaginative,
friendly owner has done a great job with this tea room.

2 scones with the afternoon tea. The sandwiches and

Comments: We had the Queen's Tea in 8/07 on a Sat.
afternoon. The food was tasty. The only complaint about
the food was the bread was a little hard on top, like it
had been sitting out. The cucumber sandwich had a bit
too much cream cheese. There were a lot of teas to
pick from, but the one server was a bit busy to give us
much time to explain the teas or let us smell some of
them as they do in other tea rooms. The chairs are nice
overstuffed comfortable chairs. The place is very beautiful. They give each person their own tiers of food
which takes up a lot of room on the table. Other places I
have been put one serving tier in the middle of the table.
The Queen's Tea included a cup of soup and a slice of
quiche with the normal tea sandwiches, desserts, scone, fruit and sweet
bread. They served jam instead of lemon curd which I missed. All in all it was enjoyable
and plenty to eat.

Comments: As a new Sussex County resident my son took me to
the Tea Hive for Mother's Day. Having been to many
tearooms in NY I was disappointed. The tea was served as a pot of hot water
w/bags to choose from, not loose tea. The sandwiches were lacking

delectable dessert we have ever had, period, was
the apple dumpling wrapped in the flakiest pastry,
and served with a warm cinnamon caramel sauce. Oh!

Comments: I visit the Tea Hive quite
regularly and I must tell you, it gets better
every time. Now it is decorated for Christmas, a
tree in every room decorated with a specific
theme. The gift around and the gift shop is just
full with ideas for that hard to find gift. There
are antique postcards framed in stained glass
which are just beautiful. Framed are actual
postcards where you can see the front and the back
of the card and each framed in a different glass
color with a Victorian flair. Framed are copies of
local Sussex County cards and holiday cards. Also,
a wide selection of teapots, tea accessories,
ornaments, and pictures.
The food is different every time I go. I have
always found it to be fresh and even got a chance
to talk to the energetic chef. She is energetic
and friendly, proudly telling how this is her
mother's retirement project. She attended CIA and
her experience shows with all the different tea
sandwiches, salads, and soups. The soups are so
original, and often her own creations, quite often
getting to work at 4-5am.
I look forward to each and every visit, from the
smile which greets you at the door to the warm and
fuzzy feeling you get just being there. You need
to get your reservations and go treat your senses!

Comments: I went to a baby shower there a
few Saturdays ago and I had such a good time. This
old house has been transformed into a tea room,
with beautifully decorated rooms, an eager staff,
a divine hostess and talented chef! Each room has
been decorated with a different theme. The menu
which you have to choose from is presented in
laminated menus with pretty bows and range in
price and appetite. The shower was so nice, the
staff wasn't hanging over us, rather allowing us
to have a nice time. We all had an Elegant Tea
Lunch, and got to choose what tea we wanted from
the menu, only to be further thrilled when we each
received our own teapot. There was one young girl
who attended the shower, and she got her lemonade
in her own special teapot. All the girls that work
there were so nice and helpful and I would like to
tell you to consider this place for your party
because they are a class act! I live in the area
and I will go again and again! Thanks Julie!!!!

Comments: What a wonderful experience ...
a true step back in time. The service was very
quick and the attached gift shop is chock full of
little surprises. This would be a great place to
hold showers or other smaller parties for the
ladies (they even have a special children's tea
party). We savored every moment and every morsel
while there. The Devonshire cream was glorious (I
even bought a jar to take home)! I would
definitely recommend this tea room to anyone who
inquired, but also recommend making reservations
... it is a bustling place.

Comments: I have found this to be a
"special place" and have brought quite a
few of my best friends here from Pennsylvania to
enjoy same. The whole atmosphere is friendly, and
the Victorian theme of the tea house makes you
feel like you are in another era. The soups are
great -- my favorite, the corn chowder. The tea
delicious, the food (sandwiches and salad) are
creative and so tasty -- the desserts are not to
be believed. Each time I come, there is another
delightful surprise waiting. I highly recommend
this place to those who wish to spend a magical

Comments: To the cheerful "Queen

to say a big thank you for the wonderful
experience I have had at your establishment. The
way you have decorated this nice old house is just
unbelievable! The gift shop is chock-full of neat
gift ideas and in every room there are things for
sale that you
just can't find any place else. It shows that you
spend a lot of time picking your decorations and
gift ideas. Each of the three rooms for dining
have been so beautifully decorated, each different
and special. Julie, the owner, always has a smile
on her face and is always eager to please! The
Chef, Kristen, is so creative! The tea sandwiches
are well thought out and delicious ... something
for everyone. You have many choices, from the
Elegant Tea, which is five courses, to just soup
and salad, and the dessert tray is OUT OF THIS
WORLD! Homemade cobbler to DIE for!!! All the
waitresses make lunch or afternoon tea a very
lovely experience for any that come in for lunch!
Leave your troubles at the door and go to the TEA

been there many, many times and have enjoyed
myself again and again!

the bread was hard around its edges and the

Comments: It was a pleasure to have my sister's bridal
shower at the Victorian Tea Room in Ocean Grove. Everything
was exactly as we asked for. All of the little details were taken care of. It shows that they have done this
often AND with excellence. The choice of fine china was a
treat. The food was fresh and homemade. The scones were
light and delicious. The wait staff was very attentive and
they accommodated some of our special dietary needs. We
were even given some tea etiquette since the owner took
courses at the Protocol School of Washington. We all had a
wonderful time and I highly recommend this tea room.

Comments: Although the décor was
appropriately Victorian, that was the only thing
they had going for them. They only had one tea, no
tea menu. When I got to the bottom of the pot I
was horrified to see TEABAGS with the paper tab
still attached and soaking in my tea!!! The
sandwiches were not true to high [sic] tea
standards such as using a PITA bread! And those
that were on regular 'soft' bread were stale and
hard as if exposed to air too long. The dessert
(lemon bars) were so disgusting that I actually
spit it out into my napkin. The SCONES, the staple
of every fine high [sic] tea, were about 1
inch in diameter, one per person, and hard as a
rock. Sorry guys but I have to be honest!
Note from TeaGuide: Afternoon
tea is the light, often elegant, meal SERVED
BEFORE 6PM consisting of finger sandwiches,
scones, pastries, and tea. High tea is a
homey, full meal served in the evening AFTER 6PM,
like supper or dinner, featuring hearty foods.

Comments: I know what a true English afternoon tea is suppose to
be like. This was far from it. Although the food and tea
wasn't horrible, it was completely off. The tea was brewed from a bag, the
scone was a totally flat cookie served with generic grape jelly, the
desserts were 6 slices of frosted cake (not petit fores or eccles
cake etc). No children's tea at all. Served my child a mug of
scalding hot chocolate - not even presented in a teapot! If you didn't

appalled!

Comments: I stopped by for the
"light tea," which consisted of a pot of
tea, tea sandwiches, and a dessert. The tea was
hot and delicious, served in a large ceramic
coffee pot. Since I usually have to order a second
pot, I was quite glad to be served such a large
quantity. I had the Darjeeling. The sandwiches
consisted of ten or twelve finger sandwiches on a
variety of breads, containing ham salad, chicken
salad, and egg salad.
Instead of one of the rich desserts available
(cheesecake, key lime pie, chocolate cake, etc.) I
opted for a scone. This proved to be a good
choice, as it was still hot from the oven. It was
very light and crumbly and the size of a saucer,
served with little Dixie cups of clotted cream,
lemon curd, and marmalade. I had to leave some
behind, I was so full. I thought this was a very
good value for $9.50, as I left half the tea
behind as well.
The two women seated next to me both ordered a
scrumptious-looking "summer chicken
salad," which included large chunks of
chicken, strawberries, and mandarin oranges among
other things, in a large serving heaped on a bed
of lettuce on a dinner plate.
The atmosphere is very pleasant, on the
"Norman Rockwell"-style main street in
Pitman, with large sunny windows, soft
instrumental music, and a very relaxed,
traditional Victorian décor. The owners
were very pleasant and efficient, greeting many of
the customers as if they saw them often. An
exceptionally pleasant experience. I would highly
recommend Penelope's.

Comments: This tearoom was very busy.
Unfortunately, there was only ONE server and this
did not allow her to have much time for each
customer to provide good service. It was a very
hectic situation. As well, the tables were right
on top of each other. Your chair backed right up
to someone else's. However, the afternoon tea was
HUGE!!! For $12.50 you received six to eight tea
sandwiches, two good scones, and about six or
seven desserts. It is definitely something that
you should share with someone else. Even the pot
of tea was HUGE!!! It was a full pot of tea and
not the individual teapots you usually see at
other tea rooms. The only thing I would criticize
about the food would be the desserts were all
cake-like and dry. After a dry tea scone, you
would like a more sweet and soft dessert. The
Devonshire cream, jam, and lemon curd were served
in small plastic cups and there was not much of
each. The teacups were worn and losing their
decoration, and the cushions on the seats were
coming apart at the seems. There was only one
bathroom and it was very small and there was a
wait. I would return but share my afternoon tea
and try the soup or salad (for $13.75). I would
also recommend that you have reservations, this
way you are guaranteed a table.

the tea sandwiches, one being plain egg salad, another dry
ham and cheese, but the chicken salad was very good. The
dessert, a lemon tart was delicious, but a bit repititious as
lemon curd had been served with the scones, so it seemed a
bit too much of that one flavor. Overall we very much enjoyed

Comments: Holsome, in the heart of downtown Princeton, was
a surprising find when I was a freshman at the University.
I had traditionally been reliant on mail-order loose leaf teas and
having Holsome's wide selection of fresh, loose-leaf teas
was a godsend. Of particular note is the Pi Lo Chun, a very rare type
of this tea that, despite the very steep price, is
unbelievably delicate and delicious. But at almost $1000/lb, it is most
definitely a delicacy. For those who can't afford this sort of
luxury, Holsome has what seems like an endless supply of
green, black, herbal, flavored, oolong, and pu-er teas.
Conveniently, teas of many grades are offered, making
purchasing both special occasion and everyday teas a breeze.
I'm very sad to be graduating as so far as I can tell, my new
home in the DC metropolitan area has nothing like Holsome
that I've been able to find. Holsome's excellent selection,
reasonable prices and its attached yoga studios make this
place the complete package.

Comments: Afternoon tea is served in the bar area at
the Hilton at Short Hills Restaurant. The atmosphere
is absolutely lovely -- chandaliers, piano music, and
elegant furnishings. The price is also reasonable for
what you get: scones, tea sandwiches, some savories,
and desserts. The drawback is that their scones are
very subpar, especially for what you would expect at a
Hilton hotel. Additionally, their tea sandwiches are like
something that you would make in your own kitchen for
your children: basically ham and cheese with the crust
cut off. The sandwiches were not impressive at all. On
the flip side, their desserts were wonderful and quite
filling. The service was very pleasant and the tea
selection, although in bags, was of a good brand and
had a nice flavor. I think that hotel could corner the
market in the area (there aren't any other established
tea rooms in the area yet) if they "upped the ante", as it
were, with their scones and finger sandwiches.

and Liz does all the cooking, baking and serving herself,
that's why it's like being in a friend's home. The scones,
tea sandwiches, desserts and presentation can only be
described as excellent. The tea room takes up only a
small part (only about 5 tables) of this beautifully

Then there are four meals called "Tea Times" - a take on

I was a member of the Victorian High Society. Everything was
fantastic, the ambiance, the food, especially the service and
the tea! I felt so welcomed and relaxed and enjoyed myself so

Comments: I have been here many times with family. The tea
is great, the food is good also. But should serve a little larger
on the finger sandwiches. Also most of the time the service is
great, but this time the server was horrible. We waiting a long
time, & tea house was not that busy.

Average. Appearance: Good.
Comments: While the tea house decor and store offerings
were quaint and cozy, the food was just ok. We both
left hungry, which says something. The sandwiches and pastries
were miniscule and the quiche didn't look homemade. The
scones were good and the dessert as well. It seemed
everything came in shifts and I like to have everything at the
same time. I only got the included dessert after asking the
server about it. She never mentioned it or gave us a choice till
asked about it. She seemed a bit inexperienced, but the
hostesses, which I suspect were the owners were very nice.

Comments: Very pretty, elegant and very clean tea room with
cozy furnishings and beautiful place settings. Sandwiches and
scones great but not sure why "mock" clotted cream and not
the real thing was served. Desserts were ok but not wonderful.
Staff delightful and attentive; they were dedicated to having
customers enjoy the experience. Cute shop with lots of
tea-related items, all reasonably priced.

Comments: I usually visit this lovely tea house several
times a year with my Red Hat chapter as well as with a
friend or two. I recently moved to an active adult
community. I arranged for all the ladies to attend for a
private social get together. Everyone enjoyed themselves and are looking forward to returning for our
"2nd Annual Dinner" at High SocieTea. I'll be returning
next month for my Red Hat Chapter's Annual Holiday
Dinner. We always get the Queen's Tea which includes
choice os tea, quiche with soup or salad, scones, finger
sandwiches, sweets, and a plated dessert. I love the atmosphere of this tea house. The hostesses are
very friendly and accomodating. Service is excellent
and the food is very good. We never seem to be able to
leave without something unique from their gift shop.

Comments: I recently visited High SocieTea with a
group of 7 other ladies. I had never been there before
and was impressed with the beautiful Victorian Style
decor. Upon entering you walk right into the Gift
Shop area where there is a tremendous array of lovely items
devoted to tea. You walk around the corner into the
dining area.
A short time after we sat down we were greeted by the
hostess who proceeded to inform us of that day’s
menu. She began by describing the special teas of
which there were three, the 2 types of scones, the
salad, the quiche, the 4 different finger sandwiches and
4 different desserts.
I ordered the High [sic] Tea ($19.95). It consisted of 2
small hot scones, which were delicious, 4 very tiny
finger sandwiches, a chicken salad, a egg salad, a
cucumber one and I don’t recall the 4th one (which
didn’t even total up to one whole sandwich) 4 small
pieces of dessert and a pot of tea. After I had finished
eating the waitress informed me that my meal came with dessert. I chose the apple pie, which
was delicious, (but 1/2 the size of a portion you normally are
served in restaurants) however, by this time since we
were almost ready to leave I opted to take it home.
The service was excellent, the atmosphere was great,
lovely background music and quiet enough for us to
carry on a conversation.
I enjoyed High SocieTea very much, however, I would
encourage them to serve larger portions with the HighTea
[sic] and Queen’s Tea and also offer an ala
carte menu.

Comments: Reservations recommended. A
lovely tea room with enough seating for groups. My
friend and I visited the High SocieTea House in
Wayne on April 20, 2005. We were seated next to
the fireplace which will be lovely during the
winter. Beautifully decorated and comfortable, I
felt right at home, able to sit back and enjoy the
relaxed ceremony of Afternoon Tea. I enjoyed the
Queen's Tea: delicious, loose leaf teas; delicious
homemade soup and quiche; fresh, hot scones; a
unique assortment of finger sandwiches; a variety
of sweets; AND dessert. Our teas were brewed and
leaves removed prior to serving. They offer a fine
assortment of teas with delicious flavors to
choose from. The tea room was full when we left
and everyone was enjoying an unhurried, relaxed,
afternoon tea. The owners give every attention to
detail, fine service, and fine food. An extensive
variety of tea related gifts are available for
purchase in their gift area adjoining the entry to
the tea room. This tea room must receive a lot of
Red Hat Society groups based on the number of
people who have signed their Red Hatter guest book
(a very nice touch). I look forward to visiting
again soon.

Comments: We went for an afternoon tea on
a hot, sunny day after visiting a museum in NYC.
It was the first time at a tearoom for my friend
and she was very impressed. We loved the
food, but thought there were too many sweets by
the time the plated dessert came. We would have
preferred a second plate of savories over the
plate of sweets. However, we absolutely loved our

the "High [sic] Tea." We found
the selections delightful and delicious. We were
all too full to eat the plated dessert and were
happily given "to go" boxes with each
dessert decorated with a live flower. We ordered 4
different flavors of tea - all delicious and
served in teapots adorned with beautiful handmade
chintz tea cozies. The atmosphere is charming and

Comments: Our church took a large party
of ladies for afternoon tea (Queen's Tea at
this establishment) and were not disappointed. I
was a little hesitant after reading review #2 on
this posting, but I tend to agree more with review
#1. The tea room is marvelously decorated and has
an elegant appearance, along with a cozy little
gift shop area. The owner was able to accommodate
our large party at one table, and was very
flexible with the needs of our group. The service
was the friendliest I have experienced--very warm
and caring, just like the hospitality you would
receive at a good friend's home. All of the food
was fresh and was served in an excellent
fashion--beautiful presentation with fresh
flowers. The soup and quiche were excellent, as
were the scones, savories (wonderful variety), and
sweets. Even dessert waas included! The scones
aren't "real" English scones, but more
like sweet tartlets. Quite tasty regardless and
they change the flavors each month. I do agree
with reviewer # 2 that the amount of clotted cream
(actually, it is more like whipping cream) and
lemon curd presented is a small amount; however,
our waitresses were happy to bring us more when
asked. Additionally, the tea is served in large
pots and is refilled at no cost. You may also
request a different type of tea for your second
pot at no cost. The tea served was excellent and
there was such a variety of choices! It would be
impossible to leave this tea room hungry!
Our party was a little late arriving and the staff
there was very accommodating. Additionally, we
stayed for over two hours and never felt rushed to
leave. The staff was also very generous in
providing "take out" boxes for any
leftovers we had
All in all--a very positive and relaxing
experience!

Comments: Went with some friends after
work and had a wonderful experience. By the times
we left all stress had left my body. As soon as
you walk in you start to
unwind. The atmosphere was soft and comforting.
Soon you lose track of the time.
The music was soft and you were able to converse
without speaking over it. The
selection of teas was more than enough and we were
served individual tea pots. The
teas were strained before they were placed on the
tables, which I prefer to keep my
tea from becoming to bitter. The menu was limited,
however one of the owners
explained that they were having a soft opening and
limited menu until everything was
running smoothly. They will change their menu on
the 1st of every month and will
add salads and lite foods as the weather changes.
I ordered the high [sic] tea and was not
disappointed. I received two tasty scones,
followed by 4 finger sandwiches and 4 sweets. Not
being a sweet person I was unable to finish all of
them. The meal
ended with a plated dessert. I chose the Victorian
cake. It's an old english recipe, a rather dense
cake with rasberry curd, enjoyed it immensely. My
co-workers enjoyed the fact that they are opened
until 8:00 p.m., which makes it a nice place to go
after work. We plan on becoming regulars!

Comments: I thought that the quality of
food could have been better, the scones were
nothing special, the amount of clotted cream and
lemon curd for four people was about a rounded
teaspoonful for all four to share. We had the High
[sic] Tea, the amount of sweets could have
been reduced and replaced with either a more
generous selection of sandwiches or a small salad.
One sandwich there is equivilent to a slice of one
panitini bread that bruchetta would be served on.
You are served a total of four varieties of
sandwiches. None equal to a half of a regular
sandwich. There is basically only three choices
for lunch. They need to expand their selection and
expand on the quantity they serve. Two of the
people that were in my party were an 86yr old and
an 80 yr old who really eat on the light side.
Cake served for desert wasn't really the freshest.

Comments: The first tea room I've been to that isn't
"twee". Warm welcome, really good food and interesting tea. The
service was just right. The only thing I'd change was the
background music. As I'm a classical musician I actually tuned
in to it ... the final chorus of Messiah? Gregorian chant? The
absolutely wrong music for this lovely place. Mozart string
quartets, harp pieces, very quiet jazz piano ...
anything but the 4 compositions on your current tape loop. Please contact me if
you want more specific suggestions.

Comments: I visited this tea room today with a friend and truly
enjoyed myself. It is in a quaint little Victorian home, is very
nicely decorated, and the staff was charming, attentive, and
very courteous. I ordered the afternoon tea and received exactly
what I expected: scones, finger sandwiches, and bite sized
desserts. Everything was quite tasty; I only have the following
recommendations for the food ... the finger sandwiches were
quite ordinary and I would have preferred a mix of sandwiches
with some mini-quiches and a few "hot" hors d'oeurvey type
items. The desserts were tasty, but were all cut into cubes. It
would be nice to have a variety of shapes and items for more
eye appeal. The scones were fabulous, although real clotted
cream was not served with the butter and preserves. It was
more like whipped cream rather than the yummy Double Devon
or Devonshire cream we have all come to know and love. Other
than that, I had a wonderful experience and would definitely go
back.
