I've been here several times and the food and service is consistently excellent. We love the vintage hats and boas that are offered to their guests. The room takes you back to a more elegant time. You must make reservations, but availability is not a problem.

Of all the tea rooms I have visited, The New Leaf is by far my favorite. The staff is friendly and so nice. I Love the fact that they have a variety hats to wear. I always feel comfortable and relaxed here. The decor takes me back to another time. The tea is delicous and the food excellent. The shop is filled with so many nice and different gifts. This was my third visit and I know it is not my last.

I've been here several times. A reservation is a must. There is a selection of hats to wear which lends an air of "high society" to the meal...Fun to see who picks what. Everyone is friendly. Service is usually excellent, as is the food. The choices are varied. The lobster bisque is excellent, salads are wonderful, good choices of sandwiches. Plenty of food.

I spent one of the best birthdays ever with a few of my dearest friends at Country by the Sea Tea Room.
When you first walk into the shop you go into a lovely antiques/gift shop and downstairs there are several rooms of antiques. To the far left and in the rear of the shop is the tearoom with all its charm. It is located within walking distance of the New Jersey shore in the charming village of Avon-by-the-Sea.  All employees were very friendly. The owner, Renee, is fantastic -- she makes you feel as though you were family.  Excellent service. I was disappointed that there were no scones. But their iced tea sure made up for it. Even though the tea was not loose it really didn't matter; it was prepared and served just right.  I highly recommend the Sunday brunch (reservations are a must).
A lovely tearoom with all the charm that goes with tea.

What a lovely tea room and antiques/gift shop! It is located within walking distance of the New Jersey shore in the charming village of Avon-by-the-Sea. The owner and all employees were very friendly. Excellent service. The chocolate cheesecake was delicious! The atmosphere was cozy and relaxing. Next to the tea room there is all sorts of beautiful chintz china and other tea-related items, as well as other gifts. Downstairs, there are several rooms of antiques. One could stay in this tea room/shop for hours! In fact, I believe we did! =) Look forward to going back SOON!

My daughter, granddaughter, sister-in-law and I regularly enjoy ourselves here. "Reenie," the owner of the tearoom, is sweet and goes out of her way to set her tables in the prettiest way possible. Food is good and we also highly recommend the Sunday brunch (make reservations). An added treat is shopping in the store, sectioned into mini-shops run by a group of women, with new giftware and antiques.

Twinings Tea Room, Cape May, NJ

Afternoon Tea at The Twinings Tea Room located in the restored 1876 Carriage House on the grounds of The Emlen Physick Estate, Cape May’s only Victorian house museum. All income from the Twinings Tearoom supports the cultural and education mission of the Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts (MAC), a not-for-profit organization.
We each chose our tea from their selection of Twinings teas and each received a mini pot full of tea. We enjoyed their Classic Tea Room Luncheon including the pot of tea, assorted tea breads and scones, soup or salad, and choice of four different sandwich selections, and dessert. I chose chicken salad, cucumber with Twinings herbal mint tea cream cheese, egg salad with garden chives, and smoked turkey with roasted asparagus and truffle mayonnaise. The food was all good and we enjoyed our visit to the tea room. Within the Carriage House there is also a beautiful gift shop filled with tea related gifts, books, jewelry, and more. After this we drove to town to catch the trolley tour. (You could stay and tour the Physick Estate for a very unique experience including your tea and the Victorian  estate tour, or do as we did and take the trolley tour to include the estate tour.)
A unique tea and tour experience!

I had tea here as part of a tour group with the Midatlantic Center for the Arts. We had about thirty people. We were offered tea, lemonade, iced tea, or water. My friend was disappointed that they did not serve coffee, as she does not drink tea and did not want a cold beverage. I was very disappointed that they had no loose tea at all, just some teabags (all Twinings) on the table, and only one of each type. I had to steal a second bag of Darjeeling from another table. The scones, as mentioned previously, were very small, but delicious, and did come with clotted cream and jelly. The sandwiches and tea breads were also delicious -- but small. We were served a nice green salad to start and a yummy custard for dessert. The ambiance was very nice. Overall, a pleasant meal with very good service, even though the tea wasn't what I had hoped.

Teabags were all Twinings, of course. There really wasn't a great selection considering the selection seen in the gift shop for sale. The sweet breads were wonderful, dessert was simply fresh strawberries and blackberries with a fresh vanilla bean cream throughout.

The Elegant Afternoon Tea ($13.50) provides an enjoyable respite to the weary vacationer. With limited seating inside and the majority of seating outside under the garden patio tent, the atmosphere is unique. The tea service shows room for improvement, but was a pleasant experience. We tasted blueberry bread and also piña colada bread, both very moist and tasty. The raisin scones, small and hard, are best not eaten. We were served a generous portion of cream for the scones and bread, no jelly however. The sandwiches, all triangular, were served on a variety of fresh breads. The fillings included chicken salad, shrimp, ham salad, egg salad, and goat's cheese. They were all very tasty. Listed as 'pastries' on the menu, we were served individual cups of bread pudding with a few blueberries garnishing the plate. I would have preferred a selection of 'pastries.' The tea is limited to a chest full of Twinings tea bags. You are provided a teapot of hot water and allowed to choose your tea bag. Iced tea (the choice was green tea the day we were there, mint was the selection the day before) or lemonade is also provided. In addition, our hostess graciously provided water as the heat was overwhelming. Occasional ocean breezes provided pleasant relief as we enjoyed afternoon tea 'al fresco.' The adjacent gift shop sells Twinings teas, and also has a nice selection of tea related books, jewelry, teapots, and more.

Our reservation was for 2pm for a party of two. If you stop in after 2pm, be prepared for the 'Chef's Choice' for menu selection -- extremely limited, no Devon (clotted) cream or jam for our quarter size scones. Six sandwich quarters, four slices of tea bread, two scones, two rice puddings and six cookies for $13.95 each. Setting was okay would be better if they offered napkins. Geared for tourists viewing the Physick Estate. Felt like they were trading on the Twining Tea name. The waiter was their only saving grace; he was great.

The food was excellent; everything was homemade and gourmet. The price was $12.95 per person for high [sic] tea and there were three of us. There were six finger sandwiches, three different (only quarters were given), sweet breads which were great, and clotted cream. Four different pastries or baked goods. My point is: Don't go there hungry and for $12.95 per person you're not getting much. Afternoon tea is $15.95 per and includes a salad or soup and all of the above.

We've been here several times. The first experience (a few years ago) was great, but the experiences have been going downhill since. On our last visit, we were seated and completely ignored for over 20 minutes. After that we just got up and left, there wasn't even anyone who cared to say goodbye on our way out. The occasion before that we felt a somewhat ignored and figured it must have just been the server on that day - I guess we were wrong. The food choices feel limited the tea is good and they have some good dessert choices. Worth the high price and having to fight to be served just so you can provide them business? No. I feel like they've got a perfect spot for a tea room in a little town like Chester and they know it.

My bridal shower was recently hosted at Sally Lunn's and it was a truly wonderful experience for all guests. The staff was highly professional and highly attentive to the event and the food was served with courtesy. The selection of food and desserts was excellent. Unfortunately due to the party size, there were only three teas to select from but I know from previous visits that the tea and food choices are quite extensive and of high quality. Sally Lunn's made a memorable event even more special and is one of my favorite places. Thank you for a wonderful job!

Sat. lunch: busy, not full. Seated with menu and tea list. After 20 min, reminded the hostess we were there. Still ignored. Eventually got lunch elsewhere. Stopped in on our way to the car to let the mgr know what had happened. Asst mgr came out and apologized, blamed 'kids' who work there, offered a couple of scones to take home. Accepted her offer – she returned & said "I didn't know the owner was here. I don't want her to see me giving you scones!" Said I didn't care about scones, I just wanted owner to be aware. Repeated my story. Owner spat, "Go get a job in a restaurant, then you'll be more understanding!" Told me that it was my fault we hadn't been served, because we weren’t there when the waiter had finally arrved (after over 30 mins) Have never met an owner who didn't at least pretend to care whether patrons enjoyed their stay or not, and certainly not one who would chastise me for receiving poor service! No one deserves what this owner dishes out.

My friend and I went to Sally Lunn's to enjoy tea - however it seems that they do not serve tea before 2pm so we had lunch. The food (cornish pasty and broccoli cheese melt) was vary tasty but the tea was a disappointment. There was a fairly good selection of teas to choose from, but as it was prepared loose in the pot the tea started out bitter and only got worse. Most unusually, neither one of us were able to finish a single pot of tea! The was more than enough food - so much so that neither of us could eat any of the attractive dessert offerings, so we selected some to go home for later. Truly delicious!! Although the building and rooms were charming they were overshadowed by the dust and clutter that reigned supreme. As another reviewer mentions "You Break it, You Bought it" signs abounded which does not add to the graciousness of the overall experience. Also, on this day the front door was propped open which resulted in a large group of flies "sharing" our food with us - not at all appetizing.

I have been to many tea rooms and after visiting Sally Lunn's, I was very disappointed. First, The servers were clueless about the teas and the menu, and the service was slow. Second, the place is too cluttered and it feels crowded. Lastly, the tea was terribly bitter because the leaves were left in the pot. I'm sorry, but don't bother.

The scones are wonderful. The service was poor -- the waitress was clueless and couldn't describe the teas, didn't bring napkins, was very slow ... a long litany of deficiencies. I believe that our experience was waitress-specific and would give Sally Lunn's another try. It's a charming shop.

We were 3 women, 2 from out of State who wanted cream tea at 1:30 in the afternoon. We were seated and when finally the waitress came she informed us, "It's lunch time and we can't serve cream tea." I fussed about that, since we were told by the hostess. Finally....after a long wait, she returned and said, "OK, I'll take your order, but you'll have to hurry". HURRY!!!!! There were several tables available for the lunch crowd - I will NEVER go back!

I have been to this Sally Lunn's several times and always enjoy myself. The ambiance is charming and it is a fun place to go, but I do agree with one of the other reviewers who said that the place felt cluttered. They have teacups, teapots, and paintings everywhere for sale in the dining area, so you do feel as if you have to walk gingerly around the place as not to break anything. They do have a nice gift shop for buying imported English items.
The afternoon tea selection is good and surprisingly filling. Each person gets tea sandwiches (two cucumber, two egg, and one salmon) and a large scone (it is rather large and quite tasty) and tea. The tea has always been good when I have visited there; however, I do feel as if they scrimp a little bit on the amount they give you. Additionally, if someone with you orders the same kind of tea, they only give you one pot of tea, not two individual ones as you would receive were each to order different kinds of tea. They will give you additional hot water upon request.
I have tried some of their other menu items and they were quite nice. Overall, I would give Sally Lunn's a B. The afternoon tea menu is always the same (they don't have a rotating sandwich selection), but at least you know what to expect when you arrive). They also do not take reservations, so if you are going on a Saturday or  lunchtime during the week, it is completely jammed! If you can, it is better  to go during the week at an off-peak time.

Our group felt the place could use some updating. The furniture is getting to look more on the worn side rather than the 'tique look. We've been there before and felt the food was better on our previous trip. The owner or manager was not very friendly. The place is getting too cluttered and we were almost afraid to move once we were inside the door. Signs all over saying "You break it, you bought it." The thrill is gone.

My best advice when visiting Sally Lunn's is skip the afternoon tea selection and order the various luncheon items off the menu. They offer Cornish Pastie, Tiddy Oggi, Cockney Pie, and Broccoli Swiss Melt in addition to daily specials. We enjoyed the Broccoli Swiss Melt. The afternoon tea selection included tiny finger sandwiches (egg salad, cucumber, and tuna all served on whole wheat bread), a scone, and a pot of tea. Our iced tea and hot tea were both bitter. The first cup of hot tea was bitter, and since the leaves were allowed to continue steeping in the pot, subsequent cups were the same. Sally Lunn's provides a nice stop for lunch in a community full of specialty shops. They also offer loose leaf tea and tea related items to purchase.

It was a 3-generation afternoon tea. My daughter, 4-year-old granddaughter and I absolutely loved Teaberry's, even before we entered the shop, as we were in awe of the beautiful Santa on the porch. My daughter and I shared the Milady's and it was more than enough for us both. The fresh, warm scones were a hit with us all. Granddaughter luxuriated in the Princess tea with her own teapot filled with her choice of tea from the extensive and quite descriptive menu. The other two selected teas were delicious. We were not rushed, even though we stayed much longer than we'd imagined.

We hosted a bridal shower at Teaberry's. The bride was absolutely thrilled. BUT I WOULD CAUTION AGAINST HOSTING AN EVENT THERE - THE OWNER WAS RUDE AND COOL IN HER RECEPTION. I attended a Bridal Shower at Teaberry's. The place is very cute - with a Victorian, old charm feel to it. There was an abundance of teapot and hat decors. The staff was especially helpful. The food was FABULOUS - very tantalizing to eat; and there is lots of it through the courses. Be careful, though, if hosting a Bridal Shower. We received some cold vibes from the owner at the end of our reception. We were well within the 2 hour + 1/2 hour setup + 1/2 hour cleanup window. Definitely give this place a visit if you've never been :)

The staff was very professional. We did not have reservations, but recommend that you make them as they were very busy! This tea room is a "gem"!

My mom, sister, and I just visited Teaberry's for the first time today and we were very pleased. It's located in a quaint part of town in a lovely old victorian home. The decor was very nice--elegant, but not fussy or overdone. We enjoyed lunch--soup, sandwiches and salads. They offer a nice variety on the lunch menu and the food was delicious. They also boast about 50 flavors of teas and each one we tried was very tasty. The scones (the most important part, IMO!) were delicious. They only had plain and currant today and we had plain. The accompanying Devonshire cream and curd/jam were very good, as well. There is a cute little gift shop in the front of the teahouse. Make a day of it & have tea at Teaberry's and then shop the local stores!

Teaberry's Tea Room serves light lunch and afternoon tea. I visited for lunch and it was wonderful! Afternoon Tea is served later in the day, so you must plan ahead and call for a reservation. Teaberry's has a great selection of loose teas and the food is simply delicious. I had a quiche lunch and homemade soup. Besides being delicious, the food was beautifully presented, and very gourmet. Everything was high quality, fresh, and delicious. I plan to visit again soon for afternoon tea. They also have a beautiful gift shop with a lot of unique gifts for the afternoon tea lover including teapots, chocolates, hats, teapot purses, and much more.

I can't say enough good things about this tea room. We stopped in to celebrate my cousin's birthday and I had the Milady's tea and it was absolutely the best. The finger sandwiches were all excellent. The scones were a nice size and very tasty. The desserts were equally good and varied. The addition of the sorbet at the end was a very nice touch on a very hot day. The server "Priscilla" listened to our comments and suggestions attentively and the owner was very friendly. The shop assistants were very helpful and there was a good selection of merchandise to choose from. If you're in the Flemington area, don't miss Teaberry's!

Teaberry’s is everything I hoped it would be! The setting was beautiful
with tea themed décor, soft relaxing music, and fresh flowers on the tables. They also have outside seating available. My spouse and I both had the Milady’s Tea, which came with a pot of tea, an assortment of finger sandwiches, scones, and dessert assortment finishing with a choice of sorbet. The sandwich and dessert assortment were gourmet quality and portions were generous. Cream, preserves, and lemon curd accompanied the scones.  Service was attentive and the atmosphere comfortable and relaxing. The owner has included all of the special details that make an elegant dining experience. Teaberry’s also has a lunch menu available earlier in the day. Everything was perfect and we can’t wait to return!

I agree with the other reviewer. This should not be called a tea room. They really do give you packets of preserves like you find at a diner. Service often leaves a lot to be desired, even the hostess doesn't look happy to see you. It appears they're doing you a favor by seating you. They do have some good soups, but this establishment should be rebilled as a luncheonette not a tea room.

Comments:
Being that this café calls itself a “tea room”, I was extremely disappointed. I was hoping for a typical afternoon tea including a pot of tea, finger sandwiches, scone, and desserts. The tea came in a worn two-cup teapot with a tea bag in it. The “sandwiches” were terrible. Literally a half sandwich of each, two pieces of bread with one slice of ham and cheese and turkey and cheese cut into smaller sizes. The scone was hard as a rock and when I asked for preserves I was brought a packet of strawberry preserves (like you would see in a diner). The dessert “assortment” consisted of about three tiny desserts, none of which seemed very fresh. The atmosphere is bland and the service was fair to poor. I don’t see how this café survives, except that tourists who shop in Flemington must frequent it. I was disgusted that this “tea room” makes absolutely no attempt to serve a traditional tea service.

We found Kathy's after the Upper Crust because a Pakistani restaurant. Our reservations were for high [sic] tea for two. The setting is inside an antique shop, and you can pick your tea service from the collection or have them select for you. Kathy was very warm and inviting, and was welcoming to our toddler daughter (not all tea houses are), and she even gave us extra bread for our little one. The tea list has both traditional and inventive brews - the strawberry tea was excellent. Next time I’ll try the maple tea perhaps. The food was excellent, highlighted with fresh breads, scones, fruit, and finger sandwiches in a traditional 3 tier service. The lobster bisque was made with the hint of sherry that foodies will love. I'm not sure where "Debbie" went, but it certainly does not resemble Kathy's; perhaps it was another tea house? Anyway, Kathy's was a very nice high [sic] tea, and we will be back.

Visited in May – I and my 2 daughters to tea at this cozy tearoom. We were delighted to be greeted with such hospitality and friendliness. This tea room’s menu of teas is extensive. Kathy was very knowledgeable about the types of tea. We were served our teas and delicious scones with clotted cream and jams within 20 minutes of our arrival. While we waited for our tea sandwiches, quiche, fruit and desserts to arrive, we were happy to browse through the antique shop, which is filled with all sorts of things that brought lots of memories back to us. Our tea meal was served in pretty antique place settings that made us feel special. The sandwiches were all freshly made with creativity and delicious. The desserts were out of this world since they are imported from Italy. Kathy’s quiche was the best! The waitress was very attentive to our needs and checked with us often to see if we needed anything. This tearoom surely did take us back to the days of tea with Grandma!

I made reservation for five and showed up with 4 people. One party could not make it. They charged us for 5 anyway. Tea is just average. Servie is lousy with a 14 years old girl who could not even remember who order what (can't blame her as this is her 2nd time to serve). The owner is carzy and could not see well. When she put the serving tree on top of plate and saucer, she could not tell. We have to help her. The sandwich was not inviting or appealing. My homemade will be better one. Anyway, it is so terrible that it is funny. I don't mind to pay. This sure will be our memory in life that we actually tried it. That's why noone is there except 4 of us. Later on, there is a lady showing up for a cup of tea by herself. The antique is not really good.

Shared a delightful afternoon in the quaint Kathy's Kove amidst antiques and many lovely things to purchase. Afternoon tea was served in courses from soup to salad, scones, sandwiches, sweets and fruits. No fear of walking out hungry in this tearoom! Sandwiches were all freshly made with originality and featured chicken salad, tuna salad and a wonderful homemade artichoke quiche which was to die for! Homemade soups were NE clam chowder, tomato and onion - all delicious. Tea was brewed with leaves and perfectly steeped. Homemade clotted cream, strawberry and peach jams topped off the chocolate chip scones which were flaky and tasty. A wonderful afternoon was spent in a tearoom I would readily return to again.

After reading a few negative reviews, I was hesitant in trying The Picket Fence but my boyfriend and I took a chance. I'm so happy we did because everything was great. We were greeted by friendly staff and seated right away. We both ordered The Afternoon Tea. For the price of $15.95, it was pretty filing (five finger sandwiches, one nice-sized scone with jam & cream, three desserts & tea). I thought both of our teas were tasty. My tea was actually two that were mixed for me since I misheard the daily tea specials. Overall, we really enjoyed ourselves & will be going back.

A group of 5 of us has been attending the Christmas Tea for 5 years now. The last 3 years, 2 more have joined us. When we started going 5 years ago, we really enjoyed it. The tea is delicious with many flavorful varieties to choose from and still is. However, the amount of food has gone downhill and we were very disappointed the last 2 years, to the point we are checking into other tea rooms. The food is tasty but started out plentiful and as each year went by became skimpier. We used to get 2 scones, which we considered the highlight of our food, but then it went to only 1. We know they are busy on the holidays but wish they would have been more hospitable and welcoming.

Again, I know what an English afternoon tea is suppose to be like. The tea was served loose which is appropriate, but it was such a finely ground tea that half of it slipped thru the strainer into my tea cup! The food is skimpy - only 5 tea sandwiches w/ afternoon tea, not the typical 8. The scone very small. Also, only had Equal or sugar. No other substitues which resulted in me drinking my tea unsweetened. Did not serve extra hot water for diluting, no milk or lemon served or even offered. The china was pretty and the children's tea (though only served 3 tea sandwiches instead of 4) was cute.

My sister took me to tea the week of my wedding as a surprise. I was SO stressed out and I simply can't put into words how relaxing and fun I found it to be having a *grown up* tea party in the midddle of my hectic week. I don't think a massage or spa treatment could have been any more relaxing. I went from being at my breaking point to totally blissed out, lol. As opposed to the previous July 2007 review, I must say that since July of 2007, I've become a regular because of the excellent food and presentation at the Picket Fence. The hostesses are very warm and pleasant. The food is fresh and tasty. I do recommend a vegetarian menu as well; some people are not inclined towards meat fillings. But that comment is an offering, not a criticism. Bravo!!! Keep up the good work!!!

The shop was lovely, as was the presentation of the food. However, we were each forced to eat off of the two-tiered service plates, which made it awkward when choosing a sandwich or trying to eat the small sampling of quiche. Also, we had no idea what was in the sandwiches, as the waitstaff left after delivering them, and no description was offered in the menu. The scone was nice, but chocolate chip, which isn't particularly English, nor did it go at all with the clotted cream or jam.

I was very pleased with our visit to the Picket Fence. The tea was excellent, as were the food and service. Everything was fresh and delicious. We had the afternoon tea, and the petite desserts were obviously homemade. The ambiance was very surprising and cheerful, with the hand-painted garden murals all over the walls. It really did feel like we were in a garden.
The tables were not crowded, and there was room for the stroller containing my toddler. I called ahead to see if it was alright to bring him, and they were very welcoming and accommodating. Fortunately, he behaved himself and didn't bother the other customers! We will definitely be coming back often.

The afternoon tea consisted of numerous tea sandwiches, two scones, and a variety of petite desserts. I was full and couldn't finish. I got to take a wonderful goody bag home. It was also very inexpensive compared to other tea rooms around. Also, my five-year old daughter loved the child's tea. It is full of sandwiches and desserts. She was even allowed to choose hot chocolate or tea. She felt so special. I would definitely recommend this tea room and I can't wait to go back. Take a day and visit the shops and leave time for tea at the Garden Tea Room.

My family and I absolutely ADORE this place. We come once a year to celebrate milestones--in fact we're going again this month to celebrate a baby! The scones are the best I've had in New Jersey. The tea is always hot (unlike at the uber-expensive Pierre Hotel in NYC, where your tea is tepid). The sandwiches are delicious--I alwas find myself eating the salmon despite the fact that I say I don't like salmon! The service is so friendly and homey and informative. And I never leave without picking up a little gift -- their prices are very reasonable, and a three-tier dessert
tray I bought there was the hit of a bridal shower I attended.

we loved the cafe the scones were amazing, fresh and warm. though it was pricey. the wedded bliss tea was not up to parr it had no rose petal as listed and didn't have the taste or scent of roses, i have had many rose teas that were wonderful, i think they gave me the wrong tea and didn't want to admit it? all and all i would go back i just would oreder another tea and hope it was as described.

I enjoy this place and would return. The food is good when you get it. The tea is good when you get it. The problem is we sat for 45 minures before the ONE waitress in the shop even brought our tea pots over. It should not take this long. water should be boiling! Also, the food takes too long to come out. It is cold sandwhiches for goodness sake. I saw a "help wanted sign" in front of the shop last time I walked by. I hope they have a new waitress or at least an additional one.

Of all the tea rooms we've visited in NJ, by far the best in terms of food and service. The sandwiches, scones, and desserts were just incredible, as was the very welcoming attention paid to us by the proprietor. While the room is somewhat crowded, the quality of the tea, food, and service more than compensate. Definitely recommend.

This tea room is absolutely adorable, with its Victorian homey feel. The three sisters who own it are wonderful, cheerful, and personable. The service was amazing, the food and tea were terrific, and I highly recommend the cranberry scones. If I worked nearby, I'd be there every afternoon. And if they have it, DEFINITELY order the spiced pumpkin soup!

The women behind the Belamari Tea Room have put their hearts and souls into creating a tiny little oasis and it certainly shows! Every detail has been thoughtfully considered, from the decor to the tea cozies to the perfect little finger sandwiches. We had gone for the afternoon tea, which was excellent! The food was carefully presented and delicious. I had gone with a non-tea drinker, but even they enjoyed the specialty teas that were offered. After a wonderful afternoon, I was inspired to be more discerning about the types of tea I drink, however nothing still quite matches up to tea from Belamari.

The owners of this tea room have done a remarkable job of transforming it into a cozy little gem. It is cheerfully decorated and altogether a very pleasant atmosphere. The proprietor(s) are delightful to talk to. The scones we had were warm and crispy on the outside. The finger sandwiches had a potpourri of flavors and textures, as did the desserts. We had the specialty fruit ice teas and they were served with a sugar syrup which was a nice touch. We will definitely make a return visit!

All in all a very pleasant experience. The room is much too small and claustrophobic. The table was too small for 3 people, a centerpiece, teapots, sugar bowl, etc. My chair was half into the aisle where people were passing. The food was excellent, and well presented, but we didn't feel like it was worth the price. The room was too hot and the air conditioning was not on.

I've had the pleasure of visiting the Belamarie Tea Room on several occasions. I've brought friends and family members to visit and they've loved it as well. Each time I've have been greeted by the pleasant hostess and also have received visits from the chef to ensure the food was to my liking. I have been able to enjoy the class that they offered as a part of National Tea Month and found it to be informative and delightful (especially since we were given samples of the different teas and scones). They have a splendid assortment of teas and baked goods. The decor is lovely along with the classical music you can hear softly playing. The owners of this tea room have certainly done their homework in what it takes to run a successful business as well as providing a product and service that customers crave. I hope they keep up the good work and sincerely trust they will. Best wishes!

I had the pleasure of visiting Belamari Tea Room in Hawthorne on February 11, 2005 for their full afternoon tea. Reservations are required for afternoon tea which includes an assortment of finger sandwiches; fresh baked scones served with lemon curd, cream, and preserves; mini desserts; and a pot of tea. Daily luncheon selections are also available.
This was a fun, delicious experience. When asked what tea we would like, we were offered a tray of little sniffing jars to help us decide which tea to choose. Tea selections included a varied list of blacks, oolong, greens, and herbals. The tea room is decorated very nicely. I met the owners at a recent tea expo and I was thrilled to see all their hard work has paid off. They have really done their homework to learn about tea and the proper way to serve. The tea room is lovely, the food is delicious, the tea is delicious, and they also have a nice selection of merchandise for sale. Afternoon tea food selections may change periodically, but my friend and I enjoyed fresh, hot plain and strawberry scones, cucumber sandwiches, egg salad sandwiches, dill chicken salad in pastry cups, cinnamon raisin nut bread with strawberry cream cheese, pecan bars, key lime bars, chocolate dream cupcakes, a mini cheesecake, and fruit. Needless to say we were pleasantly full when we left. My favorites? Perfect scones are always my favorite especially since I love clotted cream, jam, and lemon curd. And, the scones WERE perfect. The cinnamon raisin nut bread with the strawberry cream was wonderful and unique — I could see this as becoming one of their signature, yummy selections. Well, ALL the desserts were wonderful as well. Rich, tasty, and delicious. Everything was perfect and I enjoyed our visit completely.

This was my first time at Belamari Tea Shop. The attraction to the shop was the inviting appearance from the outside. The inside is a creation of a soothing decorative appearance with a great selection of delicate merchandise perfectly displayed. The choice of teas is many. I sipped my cares away with a pot of decaf herbal tea and lunch. The dreamy ambiance, excellent service, and dainty delicacies were all a part of a great tea experience. Belamari Tea Shop caters to your taste and choice of teas. The background music, hostesses, and a greeting by the chef were a joy. These ladies know how to appeal to the tea lover. I'll be back on regular occasions.

The loose teas are sometimes very good and sometimes not. I think this is because they store the teas in glass jars and there's a big front window. The store smells like coffee when you walk in. (I like the smell of coffee unless I'm going to drink tea, and this is a store, not a tea room so they don't serve tea.). There are some good packaged teas. Prices are good for the loose teas.

What a disappointment. Stale, thick, cold sandwiches (apparently made the day before and refrigerated), out-of-a-box commercial pastries, strange scones. The tea itself was excellent, and they really did serve Denvonshire cream. But the service was unbelievably bad -- the server was sullen, uncommunicative, clumsy, and completely thrown by the fact that our reservation for 4 was mistakenly listed as a reservation for 3. Apparently the Chauncy makes up the sandwiches and scones for Saturday guests in advance, and there were no more available for our 4th. Also, apparently no one at the Chauncy has actually ever gone to a real English tea, so they've got the look right but not the menu. Onion and bacon sandwiches, lox on the cucumber sandwiches, kalamata olive tapanade in the cream cheese and olive sandwiches, no raisin or currant scones, only blueberry. Not what we were looking for when we made reservations for a traditional (and expensive) English high [sic] tea.

The setting was nice; however, the fabric hanging from the ceiling was badly in need of cleaning as it was full of insects. The gift shop was also in need of a cleaning. The food was unappetizing, very heavy scones, which took a long time to serve, as they had not baked enough for our group's reservation. The desserts seemed a frozen variety from the local grocer, and we were lucky if we got two cups of tea served throughout the meal, as the staff couldn't keep up with our group and didn't leave pots at our tables. I felt very bad for our hostess, but she should have requested our money back as we had to pay to reserve the room for our group on top of the cost of the tea.

The tearoom is lovely, BUT, guess what, they were out of bread! So, no afternoon tea. I was the only one there the entire time, so they must have been out from the day before. I settled on a soggy, microwaved quiche over rotten (not wilted) lettuce. I do not reccommend it.

I tried 4 different pots from the Marco Polo to the Victorian Tea Blend. The setting was very quaint and elegantly decorated. The tables were close enough that we were able to interact with other customers. The waitress was pleasant and brought the tea as quickly as it could be brewed. The temperature was hot, but not boiling. All of the sandwiches and pastries were delightful and prompted me to purchase another tier of goodies. Mom and I didn't feel rushed and really enjoyed talking to the owner about his various travels to tea houses and picked his brain for  all of his knowledge on tea. We had such a wonderful time, that I took mom back the next day for her birthday celebration and tried more tea!

This tea room is in a truly lovely "Lavender and Lace" Victorian house which also houses a florist and gift shop crammed with special things. The tea room itself is quite small, but very elegant. I am not educated enough to discuss the finer points of the tea, but I really thought the blends were superb. I had the Victorian Garden -- a floral tea blend -- and Her Majesty's Tea, a strong, flavorful black tea. I would recommend both. The list of teas and the menu were quite impressive.
However ... the tea was served loose in the pots without an infuser, which means that the flavor of the first cup was wonderful and of subsequent cups, horrible. The scones were rubbery (obviously frozen and then heated in a microwave). The other pastries were still partially frozen and of mediocre quality. The sandwiches were delicious, except for the sand in my chicken salad. I sincerely regretted not being able to finish it, as it really was delicious and fresh.
The waitress seemed to be a floral shop worker who had been recruited to serve, and was inappropriately dressed and quite overwhelmed with just two tables. She was very friendly and did her best, though.
With better training for the staff and some improvement in the food preparation and ingredients, this could really be an excellent tea room. It is still worth stopping by for a cuppa and a browse in the shop. A great place to buy Victorian and tea paraphernalia. I noticed the floral arrangements were stunning as well and would recommend the florist.

This quaint little tea room surely has a wonderful and unique ambiance. The tea was just okay, served not so hot, and the food average. Do not waste your time on the scones. They are not good at all -- especially with the poor quality of clotted cream served. Overall, I will only return since it is close to my home and the waitress was pleasant.

Inside the menu was an insert, "The Tea Bible," with descriptions of the different tea choices offered. This was welcome to this novice tea drinker, and a copy was provided to me upon my request. Overall, I would give Lavender and Lace a good rating. Our second visit was not as nice as the first due to seemingly lack of interest in serving on the part of the waitress. The tea and food (once served) was delicious. There are many teas to choose from and many beautiful teapots and all the accessories to admire and for taking home! I will definitely be returning often for my little slice of an English tearoom.

From the moment we arrived the staff took our coats and made everyone feel right at home. Our tea was served just right and all of the guests enjoyed the lovely tea sandwiches and desserts. What made the event extra special was the attention the owner gave to all of the little girls by applying make-up, fairy dust along with hats, scarves and gloves from the old style English tea parties. Everyone had a lovely time and a delicious meal.

I have visited this tea room several times, and while I am usually pleased with the food/service, the last 2 visits the OWNER was unpleasant. Once when trying to make a reservation, she is very curt, as if she doesn't need your business. Last visit, there was an ingrediant missing from my tea sandwich,(chives) and she did not offer any apology, said it was deliberate, that it depended on the produce delivery. She also wore loud, clunky shoes in and out of the room several times. My friends and I find the tea room lovely but the owner needs an overhaul.

The crab quiche was the best I ever had. However the tea -- the reason one goes to a tea room -- was dreadful. I ordered Breakfast tea which was billed as hearty, but it was pale and tepid. Even after steeping throughout the meal it was as pale and inspid as dishwater. However I loved the tea room otherwise. The next time I visit I will ask that they make the tea stronger.

I was very disappointed. I went with my mother and my daughter and had made reservations, but we were not told that we had to make specific requests/reservations for high [sic] tea and the children's tea. Our reservations were for 1:00pm and we arrived to find that "afternoon tea" is not served until after 2.30pm. Fortunately, the waitress did accommodate us for afternoon tea. However, you did not get an assortment of sandwiches; you had to pick one kind. For $10.95 you had one small pot of tea, four tiny sandwiches, and one scone. The cream tasted like jar brand and the tea list did not distinguish between bag tea or loose leaf. The menu was pure English and maybe it is better for just lunch.

There were so many selections of tea that it was difficult to choose -- I guess I'll just have to keep going back until I've tried them all! This was a darling little spot for some tea and company.

Being avid tea room addicts, we couldn't wait to try our luck at Mulberry's. We were disappointed to learn, however, that "tea" needed advance notice. We don't always plan ahead but we did in this case and were very pleased with our experience a few days later. The tea sandwiches were plentiful, fresh, and tasty although they consisted mainly of a salad of some sort (egg, tuna, chicken). The scones were good but you had to make a choice between a scone or a dessert or pay more for one or the other. The lemon bar, I'm not sure of the correct name for it, was very good, as was a caramel chocolate shortbread bar which was delicious. They have white tea at extra cost which was very good. The strength of the brew varies however. And if memory serves me correctly, they have actual Devon (clotted) cream. We highly recommend Mulberry's but remember to call ahead the day before.

My boyfriend and I have been to the Vintage Rose Tea Room before so we wanted to bring my grandmother this time because I knew she'd enjoy it. The owner is very nice & even helped us look for my grandmother's diamond ring she lost somewhere in the store. Luckily, it was found on the floor under a nearby chair. The service is very prompt & the staff seem to be very informative about the teas & quite helpful with  recommendations. The food is always great & filling. The three of us each ordered the Afternoon Tea & were stuffed when we left. The atmosphere is very friendly & comfortable.

My friend and I selected the Ultimate Tea and were thrilled with the selection of teas and the service. I was warned my initial tea choice was strong but had never tried Lapsong Suchong. The waitress told me if I didn't like it I could switch. She was right and I could only manage to drink a cup. I ended up switching to Darjeeling. The owner and server were so nice about everything, even switching the tea flavor. Our scones were oven fresh, our salads crisp, the sandwiches and fillings savory and delicious. Vintage Rose is definitely worth a visit.

This tea room is beautiful. I love it. I would suggest the owner to find a bigger place because she will be making lots of business. She was wonderful, pleasant and so kind. The food was so good and the loose leaf tea the owner suggested is excellent -"Almond Cookie Green Tea". I could not get enough of it. It was green tea with shredded coconut and almonds. Incredible!! I will definitely visit and invite many of family and friends to this tea room. Ms. Gail you have a beautiful place and your warmth is blessing!!!

This tearoom is exactly what you would imagine a tearoom should be. I was one of about fifteen ladies who gathered for our annual holiday party. From the moment I walked through the door, I was treated like royalty. The Vintage Rose is located in the Millville Arts District. It is one of a variety of shops that have popped up in this revitalized strip of turn of the century buildings. I mention this, because the building lends itself to the charm of tearoom. It is a long, relatively narrow shop with every inch put to good use between the serving area and wares for sale on quaint hutches and non-assuming displays. The decor is cozy and welcoming, yet elegant. The tea was served in a six cup pot with a lovely tea cozy. The delicate teacups & saucers were beautiful! The hostess poured the first cup, and offered your desired amount of raw sugar  cubes. I tried a new almond/coconut blend that had recently arrived. It sounded interesting, and I wasn't disappointed! I thought that the coconut flavor might overpower it, but this wasn't the case. It had a lovely, fruity yet creamy taste that I attributed to the almond. I have been craving that tea since my visit and I can't find it anywhere! Before our tiers of goodies were brought out, our hostesses appeared with what appeared at first glance to be champagne in fluted glasses. What I thought was champagne, turned out to be a blend of green tea (which may have been flavored, I forgot to ask)and seltzer water. Each glass was graciously set before us. It was quite tasty, and enabled the host of our group to stand and make a  toast in honor of our celebration. Next came the food. Triple tiers were delivered to our table with a variety of finger sandwiches, consisting of egg salad, cucumber & cream cheese and a particularly tasty smoked salmon mousse. There were thin sugar cookies, mini rose-shaped chocolate cakes and other confections. My favorite by far, were the scones~or  should I say, the absolutely delicious lemon curd and clotted cream that accompanied the scones! Yum-mee!! As great as the food and tea are at the Vintage Rose, what stands out the most to me is the service. They kept things moving, while being very graceful with the service.

Everything about this tea room says "Welcome!" from the owner's friendly greeting on the phone to the attentive service during our recent visit. The tea selection was excellent. We tried a brand new arrival, chocolate strawberry tea. I am not usually a fan of flavored teas, but this was a nice, full bodied black tea with "just right" chocolate and strawberry flavor. Highly recommended! The tea sandwiches, desserts and scones were all fresh and delicious and served with small garnishes of fresh flowers on each tier. The atmosphere is relaxing, and the shop has lots of interesting tea-related gifts and cards for after-tea browsing. (as well as any of the loose teas on the menu for purchase). There are many special events from Murder Mystery Tea to Breast Cancer Fund Raising Teas to children's "Read to me" tea. An imaginative, friendly owner has done a great job with this tea room. We will be back!

This is a very elegant tea room. The service is great and personable. They have many teas to pick from. I have gone here several times and the only complaint I had was that the tea was a bit weak when they first opened. Now when I go I ask them to steep the tea a bit longer. I like that they do offer lemon curd instead of jam with the scones and there is always 2 scones with the afternoon tea. The sandwiches and desserts are always fresh and delicious. The shop is very cute and offer many tea related items. The owner is very friendly and is starting to offer a variety of events in the evenings this fall of 2007. I can't wait to go to one of her special events.

This tea room gets it right every time I'm there. The food is good, the scones are homemade and served warm and the service is always warm and friendly. They have an absolutely wonderful childrens tea on the menu that is served in juvenile tea pots filled with warmed chocolate milk and the tea sandwiches are peanut butter and jelly. They are quite accommodating my granddaughter does not like PB&J and they were quick to make her a grilled cheese sandwich ... service at its best!

We had the Queen's Tea in 8/07 on a Sat. afternoon. The food was tasty. The only complaint about the food was the bread was a little hard on top, like it had been sitting out. The cucumber sandwich had a bit too much cream cheese. There were a lot of teas to pick from, but the one server was a bit busy to give us much time to explain the teas or let us smell some of them as they do in other tea rooms. The chairs are nice overstuffed comfortable chairs. The place is very beautiful. They give each person their own tiers of food which takes up a lot of room on the table. Other places I have been put one serving tier in the middle of the table. The Queen's Tea included a cup of soup and a slice of quiche with the normal tea sandwiches, desserts, scone, fruit and sweet bread. They served jam instead of lemon curd which I missed. All in all it was enjoyable and plenty to eat.

We had Afternoon Tea it was so girly and so much fun and we couldn’t believe how reasonable everything was and how welcome they made us feel. We have been telling everyone about it, and we are meeting there next week, maybe I shouldn’t share our little secret, but it is just too good not to!

As a new Sussex County resident my son took me to the Tea Hive for Mother's Day. Having been to many tearooms in NY I was disappointed. The tea was served as a pot of hot water w/bags to choose from, not loose tea. The sandwiches were lacking flavor, too small and too few. The pastries were better, but nothing to talk about. We both were quite hungry when we left. The atmosphere is quaint and the gift shop is worth checking out.

the food at the tea hive was very disapointing. i had the afternoon tea sampler. the muffins and breads were stale and the scones were undecernable; the jam and lemon curd, tasteless. the tea sandwiches were also served on stale bread and obviously not freshly made. desserts were covered in whipped cream and not very imaginative. i was hoping for a much better experience as far as their food, however, the decor and service were great.

We have made The Tea Hive our little getaway oasis. We always make a day of it, as it requires a bit of travel, but is well worth it. We always try something new each time we go, and are never ever disappointed. The most delectable dessert we have ever had, period, was the apple dumpling wrapped in the flakiest pastry, and served with a warm cinnamon caramel sauce. Oh! It was just the perfect treat on a beautiful autumn day! It is truly our favorite place for tea, lunch, and a bit of shopping. During spring and summer they open the barn, filled with garden treasures. The tea, the food, and the atmosphere, combined with friendship just can't be beat!

For a lovely afternoon tea experience, The Tea Hive in Newton is THE place to go. The food is always delicious and items included in their Elegant Afternoon Tea Luncheon change daily. The salad is always a little different and so are the tea sandwiches and sweets. You may return often and never be bored. With several different decorated rooms to choose from, enjoy a different décor every time you visit. The place settings are delightful, mismatched china and silver. With afternoon tea, each person receives his/her own pot of tea. Plan to have a relaxed, enjoyable luncheon and afterward take time to browse The Tea Hive's beautiful gift shop with a lovely selection at very reasonable prices. The selections in the shop change frequently also, always something great to buy. For a true Victorian afternoon tea experience, visit The Tea Hive. Price $15-20 per person for afternoon tea luncheon. Prices are less for lunch menu items. Reservations are a must!

I have been there five times, and the people I take there can't wait to bring their friends! It is my "benchmark" for comparison when going to various tearooms. The only criticism I have is that they use mostly teabags rather than loose teas.

I visit the Tea Hive quite regularly and I must tell you, it gets better every time. Now it is decorated for Christmas, a tree in every room decorated with a specific theme. The gift around and the gift shop is just full with ideas for that hard to find gift. There are antique postcards framed in stained glass which are just beautiful. Framed are actual postcards where you can see the front and the back of the card and each framed in a different glass color with a Victorian flair. Framed are copies of local Sussex County cards and holiday cards. Also, a wide selection of teapots, tea accessories, ornaments, and pictures.
The food is different every time I go. I have always found it to be fresh and even got a chance to talk to the energetic chef. She is energetic and friendly, proudly telling how this is her mother's retirement project. She attended CIA and her experience shows with all the different tea sandwiches, salads, and soups. The soups are so original, and often her own creations, quite often getting to work at 4-5am.
I look forward to each and every visit, from the smile which greets you at the door to the warm and fuzzy feeling you get just being there. You need to get your reservations and go treat your senses!

I went to a baby shower there a few Saturdays ago and I had such a good time. This old house has been transformed into a tea room, with beautifully decorated rooms, an eager staff, a divine hostess and talented chef! Each room has been decorated with a different theme. The menu which you have to choose from is presented in laminated menus with pretty bows and range in price and appetite. The shower was so nice, the staff wasn't hanging over us, rather allowing us to have a nice time. We all had an Elegant Tea Lunch, and got to choose what tea we wanted from the menu, only to be further thrilled when we each received our own teapot. There was one young girl who attended the shower, and she got her lemonade in her own special teapot. All the girls that work there were so nice and helpful and I would like to tell you to consider this place for your party because they are a class act! I live in the area and I will go again and again! Thanks Julie!!!!

What a wonderful experience ... a true step back in time. The service was very quick and the attached gift shop is chock full of little surprises. This would be a great place to hold showers or other smaller parties for the ladies (they even have a special children's tea party). We savored every moment and every morsel while there. The Devonshire cream was glorious (I even bought a jar to take home)! I have found this to be a "special place" and have brought quite a few of my best friends here from Pennsylvania to enjoy same. The whole atmosphere is friendly, and the Victorian theme of the tea house makes you feel like you are in another era. The soups are great -- my favorite, the corn chowder. The tea delicious, the food (sandwiches and salad) are creative and so tasty -- the desserts are not to be believed. Each time I come, there is another delightful surprise waiting. To the cheerful "Queen Bee" and her "Worker Bees" I wish to say a big thank you for the wonderful experience I have had at your establishment. The way you have decorated this nice old house is just unbelievable! The gift shop is chock-full of neat gift ideas and in every room there are things for sale that you
just can't find any place else. It shows that you spend a lot of time picking your decorations and gift ideas. Each of the three rooms for dining have been so beautifully decorated, each different and special. Julie, the owner, always has a smile on her face and is always eager to please! The Chef, Kristen, is so creative! The tea sandwiches are well thought out and delicious ... something for everyone. You have many choices, from the Elegant Tea, which is five courses, to just soup and salad, and the dessert tray is OUT OF THIS WORLD! Homemade cobbler to DIE for!!! All the waitresses make lunch or afternoon tea a very lovely experience for any that come in for lunch! Leave your troubles at the door and go to the TEA HIVE for a "tea-riffic" time! I have been there many, many times and have enjoyed myself again and again!

It was a pleasure to have my sister's bridal shower at the Victorian Tea Room in Ocean Grove. Everything was exactly as we asked for. All of the little details were taken care of. It shows that they have done this often AND with excellence. The choice of fine china was a treat. The food was fresh and homemade. The scones were light and delicious. The wait staff was very attentive and they accommodated some of our special dietary needs. We were even given some tea etiquette since the owner took courses at the Protocol School of Washington. We all had a wonderful time and I highly recommend this tea room.

Although the décor was appropriately Victorian, that was the only thing they had going for them. They only had one tea, no tea menu. When I got to the bottom of the pot I was horrified to see TEABAGS with the paper tab still attached and soaking in my tea!!! The sandwiches were not true to high [sic] tea standards such as using a PITA bread! And those that were on regular 'soft' bread were stale and hard as if exposed to air too long. The dessert (lemon bars) were so disgusting that I actually spit it out into my napkin. The SCONES, the staple of every fine high [sic] tea, were about 1 inch in diameter, one per person, and hard as a rock. Sorry guys but I have to be honest!
Note from TeaGuide:
Afternoon tea is the light, often elegant, meal SERVED BEFORE 6PM consisting of finger sandwiches, scones, pastries, and tea. High tea is a homey, full meal served in the evening AFTER 6PM, like supper or dinner, featuring hearty foods.

This tea room is located in a historical building from the 1700s. The tea room is located in a beautiful brick wine cellar. The atmosphere is really different and lovely. Although teabags are used there is a wide selection. Boiling hot water in the teapots are covered with a tea cozy. Only homemade desserts are served. Tea and dessert is served on lovely china of different patterns. The carrot cake I had was exceptional. They had a selection of three or four different cakes. The volunteer help was very accommodating. This tea room is only open on Wednesdays from 1 to 4 pm.

I know what a true English afternoon tea is suppose to be like. This was far from it. Although the food and tea wasn't horrible, it was completely off. The tea was brewed from a bag, the scone was a totally flat cookie served with generic grape jelly, the desserts were 6 slices of frosted cake (not petit fores or eccles cake etc). No children's tea at all. Served my child a mug of scalding hot chocolate - not even presented in a teapot! If you didn't know better, u would like it. If you do know better, u would be appalled!
Would you go back? Sorry, no.

I wandered into Isabella's on a busy Saturday afternoon. I did not have a reservation but the hostess/waitress was more than happy to offer me a table near the front. I've been to Isabella's on a few occasions and also to Penelope's prior to their move. What a treat!!! My lunch of chicken salad BLT, chicken rice soup and a delicious pot of vanilla tea (and scone of course) were delightful. The waitress was sweet and friendly (even with a very busy lunchtime/shower crowd). The service was quick and the expierence was lovely. I can't wait to return for afternoon tea with friends.

As a Red Hatter, I have sponsored two tea parties here. Both excellent - food, service, and quaint decor. Penelope's was very accommodating with the menu. I have also used their services to cater a 100 person gathering. Selection of food was excellent as was the preparation. Just recently, we held a surprise 50th birthday party in the tearoom. Everyone in attendance positively commented on the atmosphere, dinner choices, and friendly, yet discrete service. Thank you, Penelopes for making me the "Hostest with the Mostest."

I stopped by for the "light tea," which consisted of a pot of tea, tea sandwiches, and a dessert. The tea was hot and delicious, served in a large ceramic coffee pot. Since I usually have to order a second pot, I was quite glad to be served such a large quantity. I had the Darjeeling. The sandwiches consisted of ten or twelve finger sandwiches on a variety of breads, containing ham salad, chicken salad, and egg salad.
Instead of one of the rich desserts available (cheesecake, key lime pie, chocolate cake, etc.) I opted for a scone. This proved to be a good choice, as it was still hot from the oven. It was very light and crumbly and the size of a saucer, served with little Dixie cups of clotted cream, lemon curd, and marmalade. I had to leave some behind, I was so full. I thought this was a very good value for $9.50, as I left half the tea behind as well.
The two women seated next to me both ordered a scrumptious-looking "summer chicken salad," which included large chunks of chicken, strawberries, and mandarin oranges among other things, in a large serving heaped on a bed of lettuce on a dinner plate.
The atmosphere is very pleasant, on the "Norman Rockwell"-style main street in Pitman, with large sunny windows, soft instrumental music, and a very relaxed, traditional Victorian décor.  The owners were very pleasant and efficient, greeting many of the customers as if they saw them often.  An exceptionally pleasant experience. I would highly recommend Penelope's.

This tearoom was very busy. Unfortunately, there was only ONE server and this did not allow her to have much time for each customer to provide good service. It was a very hectic situation. As well, the tables were right on top of each other. Your chair backed right up to someone else's. However, the afternoon tea was HUGE!!! For $12.50 you received six to eight tea sandwiches, two good scones, and about six or seven desserts. It is definitely something that you should share with someone else. Even the pot of tea was HUGE!!! It was a full pot of tea and not the individual teapots you usually see at other tea rooms. The only thing I would criticize about the food would be the desserts were all cake-like and dry. After a dry tea scone, you would like a more sweet and soft dessert. The Devonshire cream, jam, and lemon curd were served in small plastic cups and there was not much of each. The teacups were worn and losing their decoration, and the cushions on the seats were coming apart at the seems. There was only one bathroom and it was very small and there was a wait. I would return but share my afternoon tea and try the soup or salad (for $13.75). I would also recommend that you have reservations, this way you are guaranteed a table.

This is a lovely little tea room with wonderful scones in an amazing array of flavors. The tea was served piping hot in pretty pots. The servers are all very sweet and friendly, as is the owner/baker. We were a bit disappointed with the tea sandwiches, one being plain egg salad, another dry ham and cheese, but the chicken salad was very good. The dessert, a lemon tart was delicious, but a bit repititious as lemon curd had been served with the scones, so it seemed a bit too much of that one flavor. Overall we very much enjoyed our afternoon tea at The Scone Shoppe and congratulate the owners/operators on a beautiful tearoom!

Holsome, in the heart of downtown Princeton, was a surprising find when I was a freshman at the University. I had traditionally been reliant on mail-order loose leaf teas and having Holsome's wide selection of fresh, loose-leaf teas was a godsend. Of particular note is the Pi Lo Chun, a very rare type of this tea that, despite the very steep price, is unbelievably delicate and delicious. But at almost $1000/lb, it is most definitely a delicacy. For those who can't afford this sort of luxury, Holsome has what seems like an endless supply of green, black, herbal, flavored, oolong, and pu-er teas. Conveniently, teas of many grades are offered, making purchasing both special occasion and everyday teas a breeze. I'm very sad to be graduating as so far as I can tell, my new home in the DC metropolitan area has nothing like Holsome that I've been able to find. Holsome's excellent selection, reasonable prices and its attached yoga studios make this place the complete package.

Afternoon tea is served in the bar area at the Hilton at Short Hills Restaurant. The atmosphere is absolutely lovely -- chandaliers, piano music, and elegant furnishings. The price is also reasonable for what you get: scones, tea sandwiches, some savories, and desserts. The drawback is that their scones are very subpar, especially for what you would expect at a Hilton hotel. Additionally, their tea sandwiches are like something that you would make in your own kitchen for your children: basically ham and cheese with the crust cut off. The sandwiches were not impressive at all. On the flip side, their desserts were wonderful and quite filling. The service was very pleasant and the tea selection, although in bags, was of a good brand and had a nice flavor. I think that hotel could corner the market in the area (there aren't any other established tea rooms in the area yet) if they "upped the ante", as it were, with their scones and finger sandwiches.
Would you go back? Maybe.

Tea should always be relaxing, comfortable and enjoyed with friends and that's how we feel every time we have tea at the Lizzie Rose. When my husband and I visit with Liz (the owner), it's like going to one of your best friends house. We visit about once a month and Liz does all the cooking, baking and serving herself, that's why it's like being in a friend's home. The scones, tea sandwiches, desserts and presentation can only be described as excellent. The tea room takes up only a small part (only about 5 tables) of this beautifully restored Victorian home while the major part is a fabulous gift shop. I always have a handful of the Lizzie Rose business cards and I can be seen handing them out to those who will not accept anything but excellent when describing what you can expect when you have Afternoon Tea at the Lizzie Rose.

I was surprised at the "Teatime" options this place had. At first glance, it appears to be a cafe that serves tea instead of coffee, with paninis, snacks, cupcakes and the like. Then there are four meals called "Tea Times" - a take on traditional british, a mediterranean one, a "rocker" one (which I didnt ask about), an "eastern" one (which I had) that served crunchy baked Gyoza, Mini Eggrolls, Mochi and Pocky. For an american style cafe, it was an interesting treat to have in my hometown. There was also Bubble tea as well. No meat served here - though they had excellent grilled cheese paninis.

While the tea house decor and store offerings were quaint and cozy, the food was just ok. We both left hungry, which says something. The sandwiches and pastries were miniscule and the quiche didn't look homemade. The scones were good and the dessert as well. It seemed everything came in shifts and I like to have everything at the same time. I only got the included dessert after asking the server about it. She never mentioned it or gave us a choice till asked about it. She seemed a bit inexperienced, but the hostesses, which I suspect were the owners were very nice.

I recently visited High SocieTea with a group of 7 other ladies. I had never been there before and was impressed with the beautiful Victorian Style decor. Upon entering you walk right into the Gift Shop area where there is a tremendous array of lovely items devoted to tea. You walk around the corner into the dining area.
A short time after we sat down we were greeted by the hostess who proceeded to inform us of that day’s menu. She began by describing the special teas of which there were three, the 2 types of scones, the salad, the quiche, the 4 different finger sandwiches and 4 different desserts.
I ordered the High [sic] Tea ($19.95). It consisted of 2 small hot scones, which were delicious, 4 very tiny finger sandwiches, a chicken salad, a egg salad, a cucumber one and I don’t recall the 4th one (which didn’t even total up to one whole sandwich) 4 small pieces of dessert and a pot of tea. After I had finished eating the waitress informed me that my meal came with dessert. I chose the apple pie, which was delicious, (but 1/2 the size of a portion you normally are served in restaurants) however, by this time since we were almost ready to leave I opted to take it home.
The service was excellent, the atmosphere was great, lovely background music and quiet enough for us to carry on a conversation.
I enjoyed High SocieTea very much, however, I would encourage them to serve larger portions with the HighTea [sic] and Queen’s Tea and also offer an ala carte menu.

Reservations recommended. A lovely tea room with enough seating for groups. My friend and I visited the High SocieTea House in Wayne on April 20, 2005. We were seated next to the fireplace which will be lovely during the winter. Beautifully decorated and comfortable, I felt right at home, able to sit back and enjoy the relaxed ceremony of Afternoon Tea. I enjoyed the Queen's Tea: delicious, loose leaf teas; delicious homemade soup and quiche; fresh, hot scones; a unique assortment of finger sandwiches; a variety of sweets; AND dessert. Our teas were brewed and leaves removed prior to serving. They offer a fine assortment of teas with delicious flavors to choose from. The tea room was full when we left and everyone was enjoying an unhurried, relaxed, afternoon tea. The owners give every attention to detail, fine service, and fine food. An extensive variety of tea related gifts are available for purchase in their gift area adjoining the entry to the tea room. This tea room must receive a lot of Red Hat Society groups based on the number of people who have signed their Red Hatter guest book (a very nice touch). I look forward to visiting again soon.

We went for an afternoon tea on a hot, sunny day after visiting a museum in NYC. It was the first time at a tearoom for my friend and she was very impressed.  We loved the food, but thought there were too many sweets by the time the plated dessert came. We would have preferred a second plate of savories over the plate of sweets. However, we absolutely loved our experience! The decor was adorable!

We were all too full to eat the plated dessert and were happily given "to go" boxes with each dessert decorated with a live flower. The atmosphere is charming and classy, and there is a lovely selection of gift items. We can't wait to go back, and to bring our tea loving friends and family. Our church took a large party of ladies for afternoon tea (Queen's Tea at

The tea room is marvelously decorated and has an elegant appearance, along with a cozy little gift shop area. The owner was able to accommodate our large party at one table, and was very flexible with the needs of our group. The service was the friendliest I have experienced--very warm and caring, just like the hospitality you would receive at a good friend's home. All of the food was fresh and was served in an excellent fashion--beautiful presentation with fresh flowers. The soup and quiche were excellent, as were the scones, savories (wonderful variety), and sweets. Even dessert waas included! The scones aren't "real" English scones, but more like sweet tartlets. Quite tasty regardless and they change the flavors each month. I do agree with reviewer # 2 that the amount of clotted cream (actually, it is more like whipping cream) and lemon curd presented is a small amount; however, our waitresses were happy to bring us more when asked. Additionally, the tea is served in large pots and is refilled at no cost. You may also request a different type of tea for your second pot at no cost. The tea served was excellent and there was such a variety of choices! It would be impossible to leave this tea room hungry!
Our party was a little late arriving and the staff there was very accommodating. Additionally, we stayed for over two hours and never felt rushed to leave. The staff was also very generous in providing "take out" boxes for any leftovers we had
All in all--a very positive and relaxing experience!

Went with some friends after work and had a wonderful experience. By the times we left all stress had left my body. As soon as you walk in you start to
unwind. The atmosphere was soft and comforting. Soon you lose track of the time.
The music was soft and you were able to converse without speaking over it. The
selection of teas was more than enough and we were served individual tea pots. The
teas were strained before they were placed on the tables, which I prefer to keep my
tea from becoming to bitter. The menu was limited, however one of the owners
explained that they were having a soft opening and limited menu until everything was
running smoothly. They will change their menu on the 1st of every month and will
add salads and lite foods as the weather changes. I ordered the high [sic] tea and was not disappointed. I received two tasty scones, followed by 4 finger sandwiches and 4 sweets. Not being a sweet person I was unable to finish all of them. The meal
ended with a plated dessert. I chose the Victorian cake. It's an old english recipe, a rather dense cake with rasberry curd, enjoyed it immensely. My co-workers enjoyed the fact that they are opened until 8:00 p.m., which makes it a nice place to go after work. We plan on becoming regulars!

I thought that the quality of food could have been better, the scones were nothing special, the amount of clotted cream and lemon curd for four people was about a rounded teaspoonful for all four to share. We had the High [sic] Tea, the amount of sweets could have been reduced and replaced with either a more generous selection of sandwiches or a small salad. One sandwich there is equivilent to a slice of one panitini bread that bruchetta would be served on. You are served a total of four varieties of sandwiches. None equal to a half of a regular sandwich. There is basically only three choices for lunch. They need to expand their selection and expand on the quantity they serve. Two of the people that were in my party were an 86yr old and an 80 yr old who really eat on the light side. Cake served for desert wasn't really the freshest.

The first tea room I've been to that isn't "twee". Warm welcome, really good food and interesting tea. The service was just right. The only thing I'd change was the background music. As I'm a classical musician I actually tuned in to it ... the final chorus of Messiah? Gregorian chant? The absolutely wrong music for this lovely place. Mozart string quartets, harp pieces, very quiet jazz piano ... anything but the 4 compositions on your current tape loop. Please contact me if you want more specific suggestions.

I visited this tea room today with a friend and truly enjoyed myself. It is in a quaint little Victorian home, is very nicely decorated, and the staff was charming, attentive, and very courteous. I ordered the afternoon tea and received exactly what I expected: scones, finger sandwiches, and bite sized desserts. Everything was quite tasty; I only have the following recommendations for the food ... the finger sandwiches were quite ordinary and I would have preferred a mix of sandwiches with some mini-quiches and a few "hot" hors d'oeurvey type items. The desserts were tasty, but were all cut into cubes. It would be nice to have a variety of shapes and items for more eye appeal. The scones were fabulous, although real clotted cream was not served with the butter and preserves. It was more like whipped cream rather than the yummy Double Devon or Devonshire cream we have all come to know and love. Other than that, I had a wonderful experience and would definitely go back.

I visited with my sister and we enjoyed delicate finger sandwiches and the most wonderful pot of tea. Too many choices but that just gave us more visits to look forward to. The desserts were rich and delicious and perfectly sized. I can't get over the lovely aroma and ambiance. We left delighted and eager to return.

Attended the grand opening, there were a variety of tea’s being sampled and the staff roamed about with trays of appetizers. The pastry chef had a wonderful display of goodies set out on a table which included scones, cookies, cakes and more. The food and pastries were wonderful and everything is made from scratch on site.

As a guy I was a little weary that this would be a woman’s only place, but found it quite welcoming. The tea service was great, the ambiance elegant, and the service was attentive. I had Puh-Er tea, which was a new experience for me, and as coffee drinker was amazed at how strong and rich this tea was. I thought that the food was also excellent, in particular their biscuit (multi layered cookie) was to die for. I also tasted a chocolate Christmas loaf, which was so good that I had to have one to take!

I've eaten here several times and each time I've debated about whether or not to go back because the service is slow and the waitstaff is not at all friendly but the salads and sandwiches are tasty so I went for lunch today with my friend. Coincidentally, I had eaten there the day before too with another friend who had a potato-something soup that was not good and when I went back today, my friend ordered corn chowder which ended up being the same yucky potato soup but now with a few kernels of corn thrown in. My friend didn't like it and when she tried to send it back they wouldn't take it unless she intended to buy another entree and they were surly about it too. Too bad the soup and service were lousey because it's a cute place.
Would you go back? Maybe.
