Comments: I had much higher hopes for this tea room
based on the community paper review. The tea offerings
were extensive and excellent. With our Royal Tea 18.95
you could have several pots of differant tea, this was the
best part of the tea offering. The scones were good but
only one given per person and seconds were not offered.
The tea sandwiches were all regular bread i.e. wheat or
white and open face. No signature or special offering.
No condiments of fruit, veggie garnishes or cheese. The
soup was ok. but luke warm. The desserts again nothing
special all bars or thin sliced cake no pasteries or miniatures or chocolate dipped fruit. We could have
gone to a high end Sunday Brunch or downtown to one
of the fine hotels. The Royal child tea 10.95. It had a
nice offering of a strawberry smoothie or hot chocolate.
The peanut butter and jellie sandwiches were over filled
and lacked the special touches of all the other food.
Overall this is a great place to go for tea if you are in the
area. Leave the food to someplace else.
Would you go back? Sorry, no.

Comments: I politely disagree with the tone of the
previous reviewer. As a long-time tea drinker who favors
Chinese green tea, this shop was quite a disappointment. They do have well over a hundred
varieties of tea, but about 90% are boxed and/or bag
tea, with the majority herbal. Their selection of bulk
loose tea was limited to about 20 varieties, of which,
again, roughly half were herbal. I would expect a tea
shop selling so many varieties to have more than 5 or 6
greens in bulk, all of which I would characterize as
mediocre and overpriced. Also, no Pu-erh or any non-mainstream tea whatsoever. I'd recommend
Strawberry Fields in Urbana (across town). It has a
smaller selection, but more and better bulk green tea
including many of the China Famous Teas as well as
fun things like expanding tea "peaches."
Would you go back? Sorry, no.

Comments: This retail shop has HUNDREDS
of types of tea, loose and bagged, of every
company and name imaginable! Unfortunately, they
also sell coffee and the coffee smell is a bit
overwhelming, but no matter ~ if there's a tea
you're looking for, chances are you'll find it
here. They also have an excellent assortment of
imported foods (clotted cream, Devon cream,
English biscuits, etc) and other food and drink
items. A nice shop with friendly employees!

Comments: Afternoon Tea is offered in the
elegant Palm Court lobby for $24.50. A
harpist played. The tea is brewed from loose tea;
our pot was refreshed frequently, but fresh tea
was not provided [we did not request it]. A
3-tiered tray consisted of sandwiches, scones
& desserts. The sandwiches were cucumber with
tomato, roast beef, egg salad, rolled ham &
asparagus. Banana nut bread accompanied the scones
with jam and cream. There was only 1 each of the
desserts [WHY do tearooms do this? Everyone wants
to taste everything, and it is messy trying to
share]: chocolate mocha torte; lemon tart; swan
eclair; custard tart with fruit. The food was
delicious, the waiters attentive, and the setting
lovely. We would return.

Comments: I agree with those who found
the Drake Hotel's afternoon tea a disappointment.
While the ambiance is lovely -- tables around a
fountain with live music by a solo artist, in our
case a harpist -- the service was "ok"
and the food was poor. The tea sandwiches were
good, but the "scone" was terrible --
like a hamburger bun with black specs in it -- not
even close to a scone. The pastries did not seem
fresh and were not particularly tasty. All in all
a disappointment, especially if one has
experienced a truly fine afternoon tea service.

Comments: This was a tourist thing to do,
not a true afternoon tea. The sandwiches were dry
and not very tasty, the scones were not true
scones (more like biscuits from KFC). There is
only one strainer per table, and instead of
bringing a fresh pot of tea they just add hot
water to your teapot, so after the first pot the

Comments: The Walnut Room, on the 7th
floor of Marshall Fields on State Street, is one
of the oldest restaurants in Chicago, dating from
1907. It has brilliant and complex parquet floors
and beautifully carved walnut wood ceilings. Tea
is served until 5 p.m. Having attended a matinee,
we arrived breathlessly at 4:55. At first the
waiter laconically told us that 'the woman who did
tea was gone', but with a little cajoling he
agreed to take care of us. He resat our table,
adding a vase of roses, brought our Tea, and
checked on us regularly. Teas are brewed loose,
from Whittard's Teas [and Whittard's of Chelsea's
Teas are sold in the Gourmet Foods section in the
basement of Marshall Fields]. The sandwiches
consisted of chicken salad, egg salad, cucumber,
and salmon. Large scones, one of cinammon &
one of raspbery were served with lemon curd,
strawberry jam, and devonshire cream. [the scones
were toasted & a little dry, but that may be
due to the fact that it was 5 pm on Saturday --
but the flavor was delicious]. Desserts consisted
of chocolate covered strawberries, white chocolate
cups with chocolate mousse filling, dark choclate
cups with white chocolate mousse filling, dried
apricots dipped in chocolate, and a lime tart.
[one of each per person, no need of sharing, as is
too often the case]. Don't miss this Chicago
landmark!

'epitomize sophistication in dining. Seducing

appointments, distinguished art collection and
awe-inspiring views of the Chicago skyline.
Described by Wine Spectator as 'leading a
streamlining of American cuisine,' chef Gamba's

techniques blended with his own distinctive
touches. The intrinsic flavors of each ingredient
are emphasized, letting dishes emerge as their own
masterpieces.' The setting is sleek & trendy,
the service impeccable. Afternoon Tea is $18.00
Tea is brewed from leaves. The teapot and utensils
are silver. The servings are small, but
delectable. Open faced sandwiches on toasted
rounds [about the size of a ritz cracker]: salmon,
cucumber, ham. In lieu of scones, 2 citrus
madelines with strawberry jams. For desserts:
macaroon, chocolat tarte, vanilla custard with
raspberry sauce [served in an egg cup]. Impeccable

The food itself was excellent, with a wide selection of
sandwiches, scones, and desserts. Not necessarily traditional (e.g. no

was only good. Somewhat basic selection, minimal descriptions, but good
quality. They only weirdness was that while strainers were provided,
when they poured the tea for us, they didn't use them, which was a
bit weird. The service was overall very good, excellent when they
were around but at times gone for long periods. The atmosphere
was, well, in a hotel lobby. A very nice lobby, not very noisy, but
you're in a lobby. But overall a very pleasant experience!

Comments: I have been to many, many

the best. My boyfriend and I went for afternoon
tea. The table setting was beautiful. They also
had a 4 piece string quartet playing in the
balcony of the spacious room. The tea sandwiches
were artfully crafted, tasty and very unique.
(They also asked us if we wanted more!!) There
were two types of scones served. One plain and one
with currants. We both had one of each. Lastly,
there were several desserts, including a mini
vanilla souffle. All were excellent. I would be
remiss if I didn't add that once the looseleaf tea
arrived, my boyfriend got down on one knee and
proposed (what a wonderful place for a proposal
for a tea person??) Upon seeing this, the staff
immediately came over, asked if they could move us
to a "cozier" table (which was closer to
seeing the outside gardens) and brought us
complimentary glasses of champagne. This was such
a wonderful and sharp staff that we look forward
to returning at least for every anniversary.

The only time the waitress came back to our table
after bringing the initial tea was when she
brought the bill shortly after the food arrived
and when she kept hounding for the check. Tea
selection was not great. Food was okay. A further
minor point: the hostess did not know the

Comments: I have had afternoon tea at the

often order the champagne with the afternoon tea,
a tea option they offer. The tea is served
similarly to the Savoy in London. You are seated
at a sofa with a formal tea service on the coffee
table. There are also tables and chairs should you
prefer it. The ambiance is intimate and elegant,
although the room is a large atrium with a
fountain. Taking tea was decadent, the service
excellent, the scones with clotted cream and jam
quite good. (Let's face it, nothing in the States
compares to the clotted cream in England!) The
pastries were artfully prepared, delicious

Comments: Afternoon tea at Russian Tea
Time is the perfect respite after a visit to the
nearby Art Institute of Chicago; it's only a block
away from the front steps. The restaurant (which
also serves lunch and dinner and an astounding
array of Russian vodkas) is cosy, dark, and
authentically charming. Adding to the ambiance is
beautiful Russian music playing in the background.
Even though the tea is served in the English
tradition, I think the Russian music really makes
for a special experience.
Our Russian waiter on the day we were there was
extraordinarily attentive and, by the way, quite
handsome. Ask for Koba. :o) One of my tea
companions was vegetarian and her tea menu was
accordingly and appropriately revised.
The Afternoon Tea Service ($19.00/pp) includes a
pot of tea, scone (with cream/lemon
curd/preserves), sandwiches, and sweets.
Sandwiches include cucumber tea bites, smoked
salmon mini crepe, egg salad, corned beef on
pumpernickel, radish and watercress spread, and
cherry tomato and herbed cream cheese. Sweets
include a sesame crunch cookie, chocolate-dipped
butter cookie, walnut cookie, fudge brownie bite,
mini Napoleon torte, and fruit pastry. Tea menu
items may also be ordered a la carte.
Black tea choices are Assam Halmari TGFOP,
Darjeeling Makaibari First Flush, Lapsang Souchong,
Keemun Hao Ya, Russian Caravan, Mini Tuo Cha,
Yunnan Superior, Highland Tay (Chinese and Indian
black), English Breakfast decaf, and Georgian
Guria, which was the tea I chose.
According to the menu: "The unique
subtropical climate of Georgia (former Soviet
Republic), which is situated between the Black and
Caspian Seas to the east and west, the Caucasus
Mountains to the north, and Turkey to the south,
makes it possible for tea cultivation. It is the
northern-most region in the world to support tea.
Our Georgian Guria tea has amazingly long dark
leaves that brew up a dark, yet very mild brew
with medium body and no astringency. This tea is
good any time of the day and goes well with a
splash of milk and sugar." My pot of Georgian
Guria was perfectly prepared and perfectly
delicious.
Other tea/tisane choices are Green Oolong, English
Breakfast decaf, Rose Black, Mango Chai, Earl Grey
Imperial, Peach Apricot, Chamomile, Rooibus, Gan
Tong, Sen Cha, Dragon Well, Green Lychee and
Jasmine Yin Hao.
The menu states, "Upon your request, we can
serve your tea from individual Samovar, in Yixing
tea pot with glazed gongfu tea bowls and smell
cups, from Gifu Japanese cup, or from our classic
Russian tea glass holder."
I highly recommend Russian Tea Time. While I would
only rate the food itself as "good" (a
bit skimpy on the portions), the service is
outstanding, the tea superior, and the ambience
charming. Besides, how can you go wrong with a
handsome Russian waiter and Tchaikovsky playing in
the background?! :o)

Comments: Russian Tea Time is located on
Adams, just a block from the Art Institute, and
makes a wonderfully refreshing stop. The room is
nicely decorated, and Russian music adds a nice
touch. The staff all seem to be Russian and are
friendly, efficient, and accommodating. The
afternoon tea is excellent. Sandwiches are
plentiful (cucumber, salmon with a touch of
caviar, egg salad, corned beef on pumpernickel,
radish and watercress, tomato and cream cheese);
the raisin scone (less crumbly than a traditional
scone) is served with Devonshire cream, strawberry
preserves, and lemon curd; half a dozen sweets end
the tea. The select of teas is wide and flavorful.
We were highly impressed. They just began serving
tea (daily from 2.30 to 4.30pm), and one waiter
said, "I hope we can keep it up," so
perhaps there is some doubt. We highly recommend a
visit -- we're looking forward to returning
ourselves!

Comments: Although nothing was really
wrong with this hotel's afternoon tea service,
nothing struck me as memorable. Yes, they serve a
fine afternoon tea in a pretty surrounding. But
the tea sandwiches, while certainly pretty, were
not melt-in-your-mouth delicious. Perhaps it's
because I prefer soft bread to the Four Season's
toast-like consistency on open-faced sandwiches
... these reminded me more of canapés. The scones
and pastries were fine, but nothing special. Yes,
the teapot is cleverly designed to prevent
over-brewing of loose tea leaves. But I miss the
delicacy of fine china ... standard white hotel
dinnerware was used. The setting is small and
pretty, but not as stunning as the gorgeous lobby
of the Drake. If I hadn't been spoiled by
memorable teas in hotels such as the Adolphus in
Dallas, the Phoenician in Phoenix, and the St.
Regis in New York, I'd be able to look more kindly
on the Four Season's efforts.
Would you go back? Maybe.

Comments: This was our third visit to the
Four Seasons for afternoon tea. This time there
were three in our party, but we felt that our
servings (especially the desserts) were served for
two. We asked for additional scones (the first
were small and flat), which were quickly brought
-- but we were charged an extra $7.50 for the
three scones. This would never have happened in
England!! While the setting is lovely, we find the
Seasons to be rather chintzy in their servings.

Comments: A reasonable, though not
extensive, selection of nice loose leaf teas
served in ingeniously designed steeping pots, with
options of milk and white sugar chunks, in a

I've had. Overall, the low tea is definitely worth

Comments: I realize that quantity is not
everything, but I thought the portions were very
minimal for the price one pays for tea at the Four
Seasons. I guess you're paying for the lofty
setting high above the bustling Michigan Avenue
shopping Mecca. They had piano/violin background
music and a fireplace in the middle of the room.
The setting was very lovely. Unfortunately, we had
front row seats to a bus boy dropping and breaking
several dirty teapots and teacups. I prefer the
Hotel Continental or the Drake over the Four
Seasons for afternoon tea.

Comments: This was our second visit for
afternoon tea at the Four Seasons. The atmosphere
is superb: located on the seventh floor,
overlooking Michigan Boulevard, spacious and
elegant with fountains and greenery. A pianist
plays in the background [Gershwin, etc.]. The
service is unobtrusive but excellent. The scones,
pastries, and sandwiches are all delicious, but we
did feel that they were rather sparse with the
sandwiches. If you find you can't live without the
unique Rennefelt teapot, it is sold in the gift
shop. We recommend a visit to The Seasons!

Tea: Excellent. Food: Excellent. Service:
Good. Appearance: Excellent.
Comments: This place is great! Afternoon tea in
Chicago at a reasonable price, and an atmosphere more
comfortable than fancy. The tea room is decorated in
dark, earthy colors, yet still has a feminine atmosphere,
and they have the most interesting china: dainty, elegant, mismatched yet harmonious.
The food was definitely the best feature of the place. I ordered the Full
Tea Traditional. The scones (butterscotch and chocolate
ginger raisin) were warm and delicious, and the tea
sandwiches were light and flavorful, just the right kind of
meal to fuel a day of errand-running. And I can't forget
the desserts (the very friendly server told me what they
were, but I can't remember the details -- suffice to say,
they were chocolatey and awesome). I had to take half
of the food home because there was just so much of
it (your mileage may vary). The tea was very good as well, and there were a lot of options on the menu.
Would you go back? Yes, can't wait!

Comments: What a lovely concept...a boutique
storefront with a wide array of gifts, clothing and
accessories and a semi-private room in the back with 6
tables (I was told it could accommodate parties of 24
people). My first attempt to eat there was the day a
private party had booked it for a shower, so I came back
the next day and I'm so glad I did. Our group of 4 people
ordered a tier of their "full tea exotic". The sandwiches
were delicious and the pastries were fantastic! Tart
lemon bars, muffin cookies and chocolates to die for!
They make everything on site...their clotted cream,
lemon curd and "lavender-orange truffles" were hits.
They have their own line of chocolates--hand-rolled, and
hand-dipped chocolates. I bought two gift boxes to
take to my family and they loved them. I am a new fan of this
place and intend to revisit soon and try their weekend
brunch menu.

Comments: Halloween Tea special: Tea served in glass
teapot was a jasmine green tea which was tinted a bright green. The answer given to why it was so green
was because it was a halloween tea. It was the only tea
served, no choices. Finger sandwiches just that, skiny
with an almond on one end to represent a finger. Nothing
spectacular, blue cheese was not tasty. None of my guests liked the blue cheese
either. Stareted out with a cheesy scone, nothing to put on it. Thjey were
warm & tasty. Followed by a pumpkin spice soup in a
hollowed out pumpkin, nice touch but just so, so.
Other scones served were 3. One a chocolate, pumpkin spice
and raspberry. Scones hard, served with clotted cream
& pumpkin butter. Lemon square (hard) and a ginger
spice pumpkin cookie. Seating for 12 at 4 tables in
back of store front. Up front a nice boutique of jewelry,
handbags, cndles, bath soaps & clothing.
Unfortunately they sell T-shirts with nasty logos.
Would you go back? Sorry, no.

Comments: This is an unusual tea spot.
The treatment is first rate though a bit slow, but
we weren't in a rush, so it didn't really bother
us. You get a choice of about eight teas, which
come in silver teapots from which the server pours
your selection for you. First came a warm scone,
then a couple of tea sandwiches served on
delicious croissants. A three-tier tray of
homemade cookies and quick breads followed, with a
final wrap of a very colorful and artfully done
dessert selection picked by the chef.
A beautiful selection of classical music filled
the air in a room with lots of art objects to
delight the senses. I've been there twice and each
time there were very few other patrons which has
surprised me as the food is first rate and the
service is elegant. I recommend for an afternoon
of girl talk when you're not rushing to something
else.

something fun and different to do and chose to go to a
tea room. This was not our Original choice but I am glad
we went. The place was just charming. The food was
unique (at least to me ) and very tasty. The tea was
brewed just perfectly. The tea was drinkable upon
pouring. It was not over steeped as to be bitter. I
have read other reviews for this place, and saw complaints of
packaged half and half. Well Honestly, a true tea drinker
doesn't use anything in their tea, except a bit of
something sweet. Otherwise what is the point. Service
was slow, but we enjoyed that. In restaurants that are
pushing you out the door to make room, this place fostered conversation. Don't go here
if you are in a rush. That is NOT what this place is all about.

The owner and the staff make you feel like one of the

-- they should have sugar CUBES not wrinkled packets
of splenda!! Also the tablecloths were unironed and very
frumpy. Small portions of food, so make sure you eat

How cute! The special of the day is named for Jo

organic, whole leaf served in teapots. The scone
of the day, cranberry orange, was very tasty, as

thoroughly enjoyed the chicken salad made with
dried cranberries and walnuts on a croissant, and
a kumquat tart. With three different rooms to sit
