Park
75 at Four Seasons Hotel, Atlanta, GA
Visited: April, 2001
Comments: I had tea for the second time
at the Four Seasons Hotel in Atlanta, and a second
pleasant experience. I know that many Teamailers
have said that sometimes they get frustrated with
the tea taking a back seat to the savories and
sweets. I am delighted to report that this is not
the case at the Four Seasons.
The nice gentleman who took care of us
enthusiastically described his training with John
Harney, who came in person to instruct the staff
on the correct preparation and serving of Harney's
teas. I had Harney's Formosa Oolong, which was
excellent. Perhaps my only small wish would be to
have a second pot to decant the remaining tea
after pouring the first cup so as not to
over-steep, but this is only a minor concern
because the pots are really only sized for about
two servings, so it's likely the drinker will pour
it all before it becomes bitter.
The meal, $19 apiece (at the time of this writing,
4/22/01), was ample. I thought it was a very
reasonable price for what was served, particularly
compared with the Ritz-Carlton's price for tea. I
have yet to make it there for tea, unfortunately,
so can't make any sort of judgment, but I have
heard it's roughly $60 apiece, and it has been
booked for weeks every time I've tried to go (and
I'm not one to leave things of this sort until the
last minute).
The chocolate chip scones were served with lemon
curd and what was supposedly clotted cream. The
latter -- I remember the first occasion, it *was*
clotted cream, but I think this time due to dairy
import restrictions it was a whipped substitute of
some sort. Not their fault, and still nice. The
scones were a touch crumbly for my taste ... not
dry, just crumbly. That's a personal preference,
however.
The second tier contained sandwiches: egg salad on
wheat with a bit of cress and a sliver of avocado
on top, I think; a smoked salmon roulade topped
with caviar; a crab sandwich of some sort, and, my
favorite, beautiful little ham sandwiches with
melted brie and a bit of mustard, all edged with
transparently-thin slices of red grape. I could
have eaten several of those. :)
The third tier was filled with sweets: a small
fruit tart, two different kinds of chocolates (one
was toffee, but it may vary); two cookies, one
chocolate, one almond (I think); a slice of banana
bread, and a few other things, I think. Several
options, as you can see, and quite worth $19, I
thought.
The staff was warm and professional, especially
the gentleman of French descent who chatted with
us about the Harney's training. (I think French,
but might've been French Canadian. Absolutely
delightful, either way.)
They also have champagne and sherry if you're not
quite in the mood for tea. Overall, a very
positive experience.

The
Ritz-Carlton Hotel, Buckhead, GA
Visited:
March, 2008. Meal: ? Type of tea: Loose leaf. Served: In a teapot.
Tea: Excellent. Food: Poor. Service: Poor. Appearance:
Good.
Comments: The tea was usually hot, when finally
served. The food was assembly-line fare and reasonably
fresh - I didn't fear food poisoning. The only redeeming
feature of the tea was the scones. During previous teas,
the room appeared to be reserved for tea attendees.
During this visit, however, the room was apparently open
to anyone who wandered in off the street. One rather
boisterous group appeared to be business folk, yet
another group seemed not quite sure what we were doing
drinking tea in their bar. I know it seems impossible, but a barefoot - yes, you read that correctly,
barefoot - man casually walked through the room into an
adjoining one and sat down with a newspaper. Needless
to say, we will not repeat this experience.
Would you go back? Sorry, no.

Comments: I recently took my mother to the Lobby
Lounge located inside of the Ritz Carlton, Buckhead for
Mother's Day. The setting was beautiful, however I was
not impressed with the tea or the food. The tea was not
hot at all, and the sandwiches were just okay. The
pastries were all pretty dry, and didn't seem to have any
sweetness to them at all. However the customer service
at the Ritz, is top notch.

Comments: If
anyone has been discouraged from visiting this tea
room due to Tea Maven's review from 2002, please
give this wonderful hotel another chance. My
husband and I had a thoroughly delightful
experience with afternoon tea here. First, the
room is gorgeous ... there is no mistaking this
hotel's location as being in "The
South." The room has a garden-room feel to
it, with beautifully upholstered chairs in a
floral design, delicate colors of soft white,
green, pink, and lavender, and large windows
overlooking a beautifully landscaped area. My
husband favorably compared this experience to that
of The Empress Hotel in British Columbia. He felt
quite comfortable, which is not an everyday
occurrence for him in tea rooms. Often they are
patronized mostly by women. But here was a
wonderful mix of both men and women, as well as
business and leisure visitors. A most convivial
and dynamic atmosphere ... nothing musty or fussy.
The table was beautifully set with Wedgwood china
in an Oriental crane motif, in keeping with the
general atmosphere of the room. Gorgeous
sandwiches and pastries were served on a silver
three-tiered plate holder. And the scones and tea
bread were absolutely delicious. We appreciated
the unusual variety of sandwiches ... smoked
salmon, hummus, dilled shrimp, and
tomato-mozzarella. Several selections of Mighty
Leaf tea were offered, and service was impeccable.
All in all, a premier experience.

Comments: Our
Red Hat Society group of twelve visited this
wonderful place and are still talking about it. We
decided that this is one place we want to visit at
least once a year. The service was wonderful, the
food was suburb, and the tea was served promptly.
The server was very attentive when it came to
filling our cups. The scones were the best we had
tasted, the desserts were to die for. The savories
were very fresh and delicious. Would highly
recommend this for high [sic] tea. We sat
in the back overlooking Lenox Mall. The only
complaint I had was I wish they had told us that
valet parking was included; we didn't know this.
If you park in the paid parking lot behind the
hotel (which is not the Ritz's, and you will pay a
high price -- $1.50 for 20 minutes). Other than
that a very enjoyable experience.

Comments: We
were a large group and were placed on sofas and
chairs near the fireplace. I sat on a backless

older ladies had trouble on the mushy couch. The
tea was served on the coffee table and was very
crowded. It was so crowded they did not leave the
teapots with us, and they would only allow four
pots for the eight of us. I didn't get to drink
the kind I really would have liked to try. I would
not recommend for large parties. For smaller
parties they seat you at a regular table and have
a pot for each individual from what I could see.
The food was good but not at all excellent.

Comments: What a jewel of a tea room the
lovely resort town of Pine Mountain now has. Newly
opened, as of September 2003, this tea room is
located in the charming, historic downtown area of
tiny Pine Mountain, Georgia. Though a small
southern town, Pine Mountain draws a lot of
tourist trade due to its nearby vicinity to
Callaway Gardens and the F.D.R. Little White House
national historic site. The Rose Cottage tea room
adds a new level of graciousness to this charming
resort area.
On the day that I visited Rose Cottage, I simply
stumbled across their tea room by its inviting
sign and pretty lace curtains at the front
windows. Inside, I discovered a charmingly
decorated interior of several separate rooms ...
including a gift shop decorated in antique
furniture brought over from England. Since it was
eleven o'clock, I came in just for a cup of tea.
There were two to three selections from four
categories of tea: black, green, flavored black,
and herbal tisanes. The tea came loose in a
beautiful china teapot. When I asked for a tea
cosy, one was promptly provided. As I sat enjoying
this delicious cup of tea in their beautifully
decorated front room, I mentioned to my server how
sorry I was to not have known of their existence,
so that I could have made advance reservations for
the full afternoon tea their menu described. After
a short visit to the kitchen, and without my even
having made the request, my server advised me that
they would be able to prepare the full afternoon
tea for me if I desired. Of course, I did desire
it, and it was wonderful. The four sandwiches were
delicious on soft, flavorful breads. The fillings
were chicken curry, egg salad, and prosciutto with
mozzarella, and basil pesto spread. They offered a
selection of scones: apricot, rosemary, and
ginger. And the pastries were four miniature
muffins and two tartlets with lemon curd and
strawberries. Everything was flavorful, and the
only feature keeping my food rating from
"good" to "excellent" was a
bit of dryness to their pastries. Yet I must take
into account the short-nature Served they had
for my visit.
All in all, this was a delightful experience. The
service was quite solicitous, tea selections
varied, well prepared, and of high quality (Harney
& Sons), and the food quite good. I spent a
wonderful three hours there writing Christmas
cards, and was made to feel quite welcome during
my entire stay. It also gave me the opportunity to
observe the well-attended nature of this new tea
room. Although most patrons come for lunch, which
is served from 11am to 2pm, it is not difficult to
arrange for the full English tea service. And even
if one just came in for lunch, the menu selections
of gourmet sandwiches, soups, salads, scones, and
killer-looking desserts, would make for a
delightful repast. All in all, a wonderful
experience.

Tea: Excellent. Food: Excellent. Service:
Excellent.
Appearance: Excellent.
Comments: A sweet stone cottage, victorian design,
lots of art on the walls. We went for High [sic]
Tea (served anytime). It was lovely, leisurely, we sat for 1
1/2 hours and were attended to the whole time. The food
was so unique and so good we didn't want to stop eating!
Would you go back? Yes, can't wait!

Tea Room, Savannah, GA
Visited:
August, 2007. Meal: Lunch. Type of tea: Loose leaf teas. Served: In
a teapot.
Tea: Fair. Food: Good. Service: Average.
Appearance: Average.
Comments: First off, this tea room is run by art school
students, so you may have to alter your expectations.
I went for lunch because, from all outward appearences, I
did not think I was going to get the relaxed environment
I like for afternoon tea. I ordered one pot of tea which
was brought to the table with the bag hanging out of the
teapot with instructions to "let it steep for a few
minutes" (white tea). I also had a tuna salad sandwich
that was tasty. I opted to skip dessert as nothing in the
display cases grabbed me. The server was a nice guy,
but not a tea guy. The room was large and carried noise
well if you are the sort who likes to listen to other
people's conversations. Bottom line, if you are a tea
snob, you are likely to be unimpressed. If you just want
to hang out and have some tea and a snack, you could
do a lot worse. If you fancy yourself anti-establishment
and like to be trendy, this is the tea room for you.
Would you go back? Maybe.

Tea: Poor. Food: Poor. Service: Poor.

Comments: Hands down the worst cup of Chai I have
ever had and I have had many a cup of Chai. It was
crowded and noisy and the service was terrible -
the server did not come back to the table after the Chai and
tea cakes were delivered except to deliver the check.
The tea cake assortment was stale and pretty tasteless. I was extremely disappointed in my visit.

Comments: We
were highly disappointed in this tearoom. It was
so crowded and noisy my husband and I could not
carry on a conversation. The tables were too close
together and the little wooden chairs were very
uncomfortable. We will not visit again.

Comments: This
is my favorite tea shop. I love the historic
setting. I've found that some places have great
food and a poor setting, while others have a
beautiful setting with poor food. This place is
the total package. Excellent food in a wonderful
setting. Check out the quotes about tea in the
bathroom. I love the Gryphon. I'll definitely be
back the next time I'm in town.

Tea: Good. Food: Good. Service: Good.

Comments: I recently went to The Tea Room for lunch and tea.
There's a shop in the front where you can purchase loose tea
and many tea related items. the back is the tea room/restaurant. It is
cute, each table differs a bit in plates, silverware and
teacups. I have definitely been to places fancier, but it is quaint and sweet.
the food was decent (my quiche was so-so, but my friends enjoyed
chicken panini and the chicken salad). the tea was good, but the
stoneware teapots and tea cozy didnt stay very hot through the
meal. We got soup, a pot of tea, an entree and a small plate of
sweets (scone, cake, fruit) for about $16 which made a great lunch.
Would you go back? Maybe.

Comments: I am somewhat stunned at the previous
negative reviews as my husband and I found our afternoon tea everything it
should be. Up this this point we had only been to a few tea rooms, each unique and
only one unpleasent. We enjoy afternoon tea because
we love the relaxed atmosphere and variety of foods and
teas. This tea room is advertised and presented as a
Mackintosh tea room (not to be confused with English
or Southern style). We found the sweets and savories
delicious, the servers well educated about all teas on
the menu, and the staff enthusiastic about their business. Based on their recommendations we were
able to sample several teas and took home quite a few
more that we were happy with. Following our tea, the
owner of the shop spent nearly an hour with us and
practically presented a tea 101 lesson. I cannot say
that I found any glaring negatives about the experience
and it is one that I plan to repeat on next visit.
Would you go back? Yes, can't wait!

Comments: I held my bridesmaid luncheon at the Tea
Room. While making the reservation, they told me that I
could make a simple reservation for my party and that if
we did not mind sharing a room with others, that there
was no fee. The room itself was lovely and the set-up
was very nice. The tea was delicious and the sweets
were good. One member of my party was not able to
attend. I notified them of this the day before and was
told that we would still be charged for her, but would be
able to take her portions home with us. After the tea,
not only did they refuse to give us her portion of quiche
to take home, but then they added a $50 fee to my bill
for the party. I had to heatedly argue this matter before
it was taken off. Had these two things not happened, I
would have been completely please, however, their lack
of courteousness regarding the bill left me dissatisfied.
Would you go back? Maybe.

Comments: We visited The Tea Room for
afternoon tea with high expectations based on
reviews and endorsements; however, we were sadly
disappointed in the overall experience. From the
moment we arrived, we were apparently invisible to
the staff of the Tea Room as we were completely
ignored for over 15 minutes. The items for sale in
the shop were overpriced and not what was expected
in a tea room. Once we were escorted to our table
in the Library - a very masculine and dark room,
we were surprised to discover a west indies theme
rather than a typical southern floral and china
decor. The china was brown and the teapots were
stoneware in cozies. Very disappointing. The tea
service was good, unfortunately you could only
sample one tea unlike other tea rooms we have
visited. We had to request cream as the tea was
only served with lemon and brown sugar. The food
was sparse and not memorable. The noise coming
from the kitchen and other wait staff was quite
distracting. For the quality and quantity the
afternoon tea was overpriced. Sadly, this was one
of the most anticipated activities on our agenda
while visiting Savannah, but it was the most
disappointing time we had.
Would you go back? Sorry, no.

Comments: My sister and I visited The Tea
Room in Savannah on a weekend trip. I had been
looking forward to the experience, but was rather
disappointed by the food. Tea selection was
amazing, but the scones were more like mushy
coffee cake, sandwiches were sparse - if you can
even call them sandwiches. Incredibly overpriced
for what you get. Again, very disappointing.

Meal: Afternoon tea. Type of tea served: --

Tea: Excellent. Food: Excellent.

Comments: I just discovered your
delightful and helpful website. I am a tea shop
lover and after seeing this particular one in
Southern Living, I was determined to go while on a
business trip with my husband last year. Don't be
put off by the nondescript entrance to this one!
Inside there are wonderful things in store, from
the well stocked teas for sale, along with items
pertaining to the service of tea, to the
absolutely marvelous restaurant itself. This is,
hands down, the best tea experience I have ever
had. Even though I am quite new to the tearoom
scene, this is the experience I will base all
others on!
I was seated in the cozy room behind the gift shop
in the front of the tearoom. I was alone, and went
for the "lunch" tea. Along with the
lunch offerings, I chose to enjoy one of my
favorite teas, jasmine. I was definitely not
disappointed.
It was presented in a teapot, covered by a cosy. A
beautiful china cup and saucer, along with a
separate saucer holding a few lemon slices studded
with cloves came alongside the tea cup. How
thoughtful and extra-special... my soup arrived
soon and it was a delicious corn chowder, rich and
creamy. I decided I should have ordered a bowl of
it instead of a cup but there were other things to
follow. Along with the soup, there were little tea
sandwiches of egg salad, chicken salad and
cucumber. Nice for nibbling but good that they
left room for the scones and savories also on the
tiered tray. I slowly savored each little bite and
sipped the hot and flavorful tea, which the server
was quick to refill when I requested more. The
service was quiet and quite adequate for my needs.
I enjoyed a relaxed meal and tea without being
made to feel that someone needed my table. All
around me were others obviously enjoying their
repasts as well ... a mother and son sharing a
lunch together, four friends enjoying a birthday
lunch, and a group of girlfriends taking a break
from their early holiday shopping. It was quite a
delicious experience, and I imagined how much more
so it would be to bring my mother and sisters, or
a good friend here to while away the hours over a
good cup of tea and well-prepared food to
accompany it.
I will return!

Comments: The atmosphere at Turtle Dragon was very
comfortable and relaxing. Everyone there was so nice
and helpful when we were visiting each time. They have
a wonderful selection of teas, tea pots and more. You
HAVE to try the Velvet Tea (a definite delight)!
Their screened in porch overlooking the marsh was a
wonderful step out of the fast pace of every day; I
wanted to take it home with me. I can not wait to go
back and spend more time there and sample new teas.
If you are on Tybee Island and want an experience with
teas that are wonderful and a group of women you feel
are friends by the time you leave stop in at Turtle
Dragon and stay a while! You won't leave empty handed
nor with an empty spirit!
Would you go back? Yes, can't wait!
