The
Flavour of Britain, Wilmington, DE
Visited:
January, 2008. Meal: Afternoon tea. Type of tea: Loose leaf. Served: In a teapot.
Tea: Good. Food: Average. Service: Fair.
Appearance: Excellent.
Comments: The welcome here was cool and the staff
seemed to not know what to do with us when we arrived
desipte our having a reservation. The service was very
slow and our server inattentive. The food while plentiful
was average; just quartered, crustless sanwiches of egg
and tuna salads, beef, and a cheese and carrot-tasting
creation. The pastries were tasty and attractive. This is
the first tea shop I've been to that served the scone last.
The warm scone was fresh and light. Our leftovers were
nicely packaged to go and a nice touch was the clotted
cream. lemon curd and jam packaged in tiny containers
along with the scone. The apricot tea was very good and
nicely presented with tea strainers in pretty china pots
but the stoneware cups were tacky and unattractive.
The decor is pretty and inviting and the shop has some
nice things. Overall it was an average experince.
Would you go back? Sorry, no.

Comments: Our group of friends visits regularly since
we work near-by. It couldn't be nicer. They have
recently spiffed up the decor a bit but it has always been nice.
Be sure to call ahead and reserve a spot.

Comments: I took my Mom for her birthday. We had an
enjoyable and relaxing experience. We tried the Raspberry and Apricot teas. The Raspberry was good
and the Apricot tea was excellent! The amount of food
for the price was fair. I was a little disappointed in the
store & selection of items. They were out of just about
all of their loose teas. I really wanted to take home
some of the Apricot tea. Despite this, I would recommend this place to others and plan to return.

Comments: I happened into the store to make a
purchase, and having just days earlier returned from the
UK, the thought of afternoon tea seemed appealing. The
waitress was taken aback that I had no reservation, but
after much ado I was seated. Only one other table was
in use and two others were put into use while I was
there. The tea was good, as were the tea sandwiches
and the scone was delicious. However, service is not
great, and they are not very welcoming. In addition,
another patron (also a wal-in) received a ceramic teapot and mug - a definite no-no for English
style tea.
Would you go back? Maybe.

Comments: My friends and family all
frequent this tea room and find the food to be
very good, the tea is wonderful and the service
delightful, if sometimes slow due to volume.
Reservations are necessary because it is so
popular and if you arrive without reservations,
while the hostess may be perplexed, they do all
they can to accomodate you when possible. Anyone I
have introduced to The Flavor of Britain loves it
and returns frequently. In a short phrase, the
whole experience is delightful. Special Teas, up
the road, as mentioned by another reviewer offers
different types of teas and the food is not as
good.

Comments: I stopped in at exactly noon on
a Saturday. I was solo, but the hostess seemed
perplexed and down right put-off that I hadn't
made a reservation. I couldn't help but notice
that ten out of the twelve small tables were empty
(and unfortunately remained so during my visit).
In spite of the hostess' "attitude," I
was seated and waited on promptly. Overall service
was efficient and cordial. I had the full tea for
$12.95, which included a three-cup pot of tea, a
two-tiered tray of finger sandwiches and sweets,
and a choice of one of three flavors of scone
served with jam and lemon curd. The room was
small, clean, neat, and otherwise unremarkably
appointed. The hostess (whom I believe was also
the owner) was unsmiling, unwelcoming, and barely
uttered a "thank you" as I paid my
check. Compared to Special Teas Tea Room (which is
eight miles north on the same road), Taste of
Britain got a "B" for food, service, and
cleanliness, but a C- for hospitality. Based on
the lack of patrons during what should have been a
busy hour on the busiest day, I'm inclined to
believe that I'm not the only one who has
experienced negative vibes here. Knowing that I
can receive exemplary service, hospitality, and
food/tea at Special Teas Tea Room, I can honestly
say I will not return to or recommend Taste of
Britain.

Comments: My sister and I took our
parents to this tea room on Mother's Day and we
all had a wonderful time. The tea room had a
lovely Victorian air with tiny floral wallpaper
and decorative teapots on the fireplace mantel.
All the tables were set with crisp white
tablecloths and sparkling place settings. We
ordered "tea for four" which was
surprisingly filling. We received our own teapot,
and each teapot was beautiful and unique. We had
fun just comparing our pots! The teapots arrived
with a silver tea strainer for each of us, which
provided ample evidence that the tea was made with
loose tea leaves. We really enjoyed the flavor of
our different tea selections. The food was also
fresh and showed attention to detail. Instead of
the typical cucumber tea sandwiches, the first
tier held small roast beef, tuna salad, egg salad,
and cheese sandwiches. The second tier offered a
wonderful selection of small cakes and cookies. At
that point, we were completely full, but I
couldn't resist trying out the next course of
piping hot scones, both plain and lemon.
Accompanied by strawberry jam, lemon curd, and
clotted cream, the fresh scones were the high
point of an already memorable experience. After
the tea, we enjoyed browsing the store which, like
their menu, offered an interesting and unique
variety of British imports, including teapots,
bath and showers goods, foodstuffs, and gift
ideas. The owners of this establishment are
actually British which naturally adds to the
authenticity of the ambiance. I appreciated the
fact that this tea room not only offered fresh and
delicious menu items, but also cared enough to pay
attention to the little details such as the unique
individual teapots.
