Comments: This was my third visit and I was not

scones, the sandwiches and the sweets are scrumptious. The scones are for
sale on SAturdays and I frequently stop by to pick up a

Comments: Tinkling Teacups has consistently
delivered on every occasion that I have visited there. It is
for this reason that when I celebrated a special event in
my life that Tinkling Teacups was the only place I would
have the party. Yes, it is a small area but we managed
to fit about 24 people in there (mostly adults). I made
everyone wear a hat. It was a great time. Everything
was perfect as it always is. Most of the people that
were invited to the party had already been to Tinkling
Teacups because I bring everyone I know there and they
in turn bring all of their friends.
Would you go back? Yes, can't wait!

Comments: Mom and I just arrived home from
another wonderful lunch at Tinkling Teacups. We go
twice a month. It's a lovely family-run tea room.
The food is always delicious. It's a treat to go out
and have a home-cooked meal, instead of the same old
boring menu you find in other restaurants. Today's
lunch started with a piping hot bowl of Italian
Wedding Soup. The broth had a hearty chicken flavor,
with lots of spinach, meatballs, and pasta --
perfect on a cold rainy day. Mom had the macaroni
and cheese -- another comfort food with a flair.
Minced onions add a zing to the taste, and the
tomato slices on top add color and a nice taste. I
had the Luncheon Sausage Rolls -- truly English. The
pastry is light and airy, the sausage is tasty, but
not too spicy. Dessert is always a tough choice.
They are all great and trying to decide which one to
have is difficult. Today there were nine choices in
addition to the items that are always on hand. Mom
had Turtle Cheesecake -- rich, smooth, and loaded
with chocolate and caramel. I had the Caramel
Custard -- a light creamy custard that makes you
smile in a caramel sauce that defies words. It's
just heavenly. But because the choice was so hard to
make, I ordered the cream tea (scones, Devon cream,
and raspberry preserves) to go. They'll be a nice
treat tonight with a cup of tea. The tea we had with
lunch was Grand Marnier -- smooth, rich and with a
gently sweet taste. It was the prefect complement to
lunch.
The owner, Avril, checks in on everyone when she can
sneak away from the kitchen. Her granddaughters,
Tiffani and Samantha, take good care of the
customers and make sure tables are cleared quickly.
I think the fact that most of the staff is family
shows in the service and atmosphere. I describe the
dining room as civilized. It's pleasant, warm, and
inviting -- a welcome change from the look-alike
chain restaurants that are everywhere. I can hardly
wait to go back. My final word on Tinkling Teacups,
Excellent. Make your reservations, you can't always
get in without them. I'm sure you'll love it.

Tea: Poor. Food: Fair. Service: Poor.

Comments: I have never had such a bad tea
in my life! When we walked into the tea room, my
mother was shown a seat with her back to the aisle.
This makes her uncomfortable, so she took a seat at
the same table with her back to the wall. The
waitress/co-owner treated us very poorly thereafter.
When the tea was delivered to the table, it was the
worst Earl Grey I've ever tasted. The waitress made
a suggestion on what she thought we should order. We
wanted more food than that particular order would
have given us and ordered in kind. She was offended
... we spent MORE money, and she was offended. The
sandwiches, quiches, scones and desserts were served
at the same time and on the same three-tiered
serving dish, all kind of mish-mashed together.
Though the sandwiches were made there, the quiches
and desserts appeared to be something I could easily
purchase in the freezer section of one of those
grocery-warehouses. I ordered a second pot of tea.
When it was grumpily delivered, un-steeped, to the
table, we were informed that we would need to leave
since someone else wanted the table! This was about
thirty minutes after we had been served. Remember,
the second pot of tea is still steeping on the table
and needed another three minutes or so before it was
strong enough to drink. We were so stunned, we just
paid and left though I refused to leave a tip. I
know at least three people who will never darken
their door again!

Comments: I celebrated my special birthday
with a "Fif-tea-ith" party at this lovely
tea shop in Connecticut. The owner and her daughter
and son-in-law did everything possible to make this
event so special for my family and friends -- and
especially for me! The tea room is a perfect setting
for an intimate celebration -- twenty-six guests
were able to fit in just fine. Both hot and iced
teas were served in beautiful teapots and the tables
were elegantly set.
I ordered a vegetarian menu and the food was in
abundance. My guests were able to take home a box of
goodies from the party to be shared with their
families at home.
The photos I now treasure from this special day
capture the lovely setting and unique ambiance of
this quaint tea room.

Comments: Although the space is small it
has no bearing on the service or quality of food. It
is quaint and comfortable. During our visit we had
iced tea as well as hot tea, both of which were out
of this world in flavor. The menu of the day gave a
large variety of choices. The portions were more
than ample and the deserts to say the least made
your mouth water. The owner was friendly and
extremely helpful; she personally visited our table
to discuss a suggestion we had for the menu, which
was our personal favorite: cheese and onion pie. My
sister, mother, and myself had a wonderful afternoon
visiting, eating, and drinking. Our day didn't end
until we shopped in their small gift shop to
purchase the tea we had during our meal. Thanks to

my sisters together from California, Illinois,
Canada, and Connecticut. We actually had an iced tea
which was lovely with a blend of fruits. The
selection for the afternoon tea plates are many and
so we ended up one order for every two people and we
were very satisfied. The proprietress was very
cordial and willingly snapped a couple of photos of

Comments: A delightful experience with a
friend who had never had afternoon tea! She was duly
impressed at Tinkling Teacups. I had made a
reservation for two for afternoon tea and our
waitress suggested that afternoon tea for one would
be more than enough for both of us. She was soooo
right. The plate was heaped almost to overflowing
with tea sandwiches, desserts and scones. The scones
were very small but delicious with clotted cream and
jam. The sandwiches were diversified and quite good.
The desserts, although frozen previously, were still
very good. The tea was served with the leaves still
in the pot, and although a strainer came with each
cup of tea ordered ... I would recommend taking the
leaves out prior to serving or putting a strainer on
each spout. The service was exemplary, and I had a
chance to speak with the owner, who was so pleasant.
The price was $13.95 not including the tea ... but
again, one serving is enough for two. I would
recommend this tea shop and the delightful ride to
get there to anyone within a hundred mile radius.

Comments: This is an adorable place! It is
located in the quaint, rural village of East
Hampton, on Main Street. The 1897 building
previously housed a cobbler, beauty shop, barber,
appliance store, and post office. A little bell on
the door tinkles (hence the name of the tea room) as
it announces your arrival. The original oak floors,
oriental rugs, and tin ceiling add warmth and
coziness to the room. Rich burgundy striped
upholstered chairs create a relaxing atmosphere.
Roses are the theme found throughout. The tables are
covered with tiny rose calico print fabric overlaid
with lace. Stenciled roses cover the walls and soft
classical music plays in the background. Rose swags
adorn the lace curtains overlooking a small garden
out front. So very English! A gift shop holds
teacups, writing paper, pads and tea towels. In a
prominent place is a small portrait of Queen
Elizabeth overseeing the activity.
This tea room serves both lunch and tea, an idea
which I love. I must say the tea offerings are
abundant. I never go away hungry from this place!
The menu changes daily with unique dishes such as
Cornish pasty and shepherd's pie. The tea consisted
of cucumber, ham and cheese, chicken salad, and
salmon sandwiches. Stilton cheese with chopped
tomato was served on a wafer. Next, came a plate of
raisin scones, raspberry jam and Devon cream. The
third and final course consisted of lemon tartlets
garnished with fresh strawberries, madeleines, pecan
cookies, walnut brownie, and miniature poppy seed
muffins. Tea selections are numerous. I had a mango
iced tea which was delicious. I requested the scones
be served later, after our sandwiches and before the
desserts.
The service, by a recent college grad with a smiling
face, was excellent. The owner, Avril Greco, is
about as gracious as a person can be. I asked her
why she started the tea room and she said she had a
collection of four hundred china cups. When her
husband chided her upon her return from a trip to
her native London with yet another china cup, she
replied that someday she would open a tea room. In
May of 1999, along with the help of her
daughter-in-law and granddaughter, she did just
that.
To complete our excursion we visited various antique
shops located next door and across the street.
Looking up and seeing the majestic Congregational
Church perched on a hill nearby personified this New
England village, now complete with an exquisite
Victorian tea room to come to for a respite from the
stress of the modern world.

Comments: Although not easy to find with a
very small sign flat against the building and no
on-site parking (a flag or something to catch your
eye as you drive by would really help), we feel it
is worth the effort to find Tinkling Teacups.
Tinkling Teacups is run by a friendly British lady
who made us feel quite at home. A small shop, I'd
recommend calling ahead for reservations. Each place
is set with matching teacup/saucer and luncheon
plate. We were encouraged to switch ours if we found
one we liked better at another setting (not being
used, of course!). Although the owner was
short-staffed and apologetic, we felt well cared
for.
My friend and I ordered the afternoon tea with peach
brandy tea and the only decaf option (as I recall),
Raspberry. Both teas were delicious but as the
leaves were left loose in the pot, the first cup was
weak and the last cups were bitter. IMHO the
customer's tea should be served when ready to drink
and the leaves not left to stew in the pot.
Three small (1-1/2"-ish round) raisin scones
were served first with a small ramekin of clotted
cream and one of jam. The presentation was nice, but
the scones were cold with a slightly rubbery
texture. I must admit that I have high expectations
with scones and desserts as I am a baker and make
fluffy and light scones with outstanding flavor.
Next came a two-tiered stand with a dinner-size
plate on bottom heaped with tea sandwiches and
savories. Although the effect was overwhelming, the
flavor of the sandwiches was ho-hum. Unimaginative
sandwiches fillings (diced chicken w/mayo, cucumber
w/butter, etc.) were just OK. My favorite was
strawberry cream cheese on canned brown bread cut
with a teapot cutter. It was *fun* to discover the
many different flavors and compare notes. We really
enjoyed the flavor of the savories (baby quiches,
breakfast sausage in puff pastry, English cheese on
water crackers, chive/cheese scone, meat filling in
puff pastry, potato/chive in puff pastry, cheese
straws, etc.) They were served warm and were
delicious although I believe some (if not all) were
pre-made frozen items. No matter, really, as they
were the highlight of the meal.
Miniature desserts (cream puff, brownie, éclair,
several cookies, strawberry lemon tart, cupcake,
muffin) crowded the top plate of the stand, and
again, I believe most were store-bought. After the
scones, sandwiches and savories, most of the
desserts were boxed and sent home.
A small room with British and tea-related items
offered tea cozies, tea, gourmet foods, teacups and
teapots for sale. All in all, Tinkling Teacups
serves a *very* generous afternoon tea which my
friend and I both enjoyed and would recommend.

Comments: How would you like to be
transported to Belgium without crossing the
Atlantic Ocean? By visiting Belgique Salon de Thé
in Kent, CT you will have done so. Situated at the
intersections of Routes 7 and 314 at the monument
is a restored Victorian house, circa 1898. The
vibrant yellow stately mansion seems to draw you
in like Alice's looking glass to see what is
inside this magnificent house. Pierre Gilissen,
the owner, ushered us into a room with four tables
and a settee near a bay window. He said we could
chose any table we wanted, and since it was a
birthday celebration for me, I chose a table
against the wall with a huge hanging tapestry
behind me. The room was decorated in red, yellow,
and gold in the grand European style. Having only
been open since April, 2003 for afternoon tea,
lunch, and dinner, the place sparkled with newness
and freshness. Diane, my friend, being her guest,
insisted I opt for the Grand Tea since it was my
birthday, versus ordering the Petit Tea. Belgique
has only seven tables, so there is a $30 per
person charge per table. They welcome guests
twelve years of age and above.
In selecting our teas, Diane chose Darjeeling and
I chose decaf Ceylon. The tea was served to us by
Pierre himself, always there to refill our cups as
needed. While classical music and opera played
quietly in the background, we ate tea sandwiches
of egg salad, cucumber, Norwegian salmon (deemed
superior to Scottish salmon we agreed) and cream
cheese, watercress, and cream cheese, and a
miniature boat of endive filled with tuna and tied
with a single strand of chive. Presentation
deserved an A-plus. Pear with pecan on crusty
French bread with imported bleu cheese was superb.
There was also a paté (made on the premises) of
beef and pork with pistachios on a baguette, and
tomato and cream cheese sandwich. A delectable
thin cheese straw completed the sandwich course.
Served on a separate plate were four freshly made
briôches, with little ceramic pots of apricot and
strawberry jams. For dessert, fruit/pound cake,
baby madeleines, chocolate mousse cookies,
chocolate swirl twill cookies, and one with "Sacher"
written in gold script on a chocolate tart, pecan
shortbreads, meringues, cherry tarts, almond
tulle, maroon cookies, and puff pastry with a
cherry. A Grand Tea in the true sense!
After all this, to my surprise, I was presented
with a chocolate mousse birthday cake with a
slender candle in it. What a tea experience!
Pierre boxed up all our remainders for us to take
home. Now whenever I want to be transported to the
fine dining of Europe, specifically Belgium, I
will find my way out into the country to a gem of
a place tucked away in the hills of NW
Connecticut. p.s. Don't forget to pay a visit to
the Belgique Patisserie & Chocolatier in the
carriage house behind the Victorian house.

they had was good though. They did not have "teacups". The big
lug of mugs they served us in were too heavy for my daughter.
Instead of bringing her a teacup they brought her a plain mug. They
served my daughter boxed (I asked the waitress if it was
homemade and she said kraft) mac and cheese. It came with a
side of fruit ... half a sliced banana. We wanted scones and
such ... they did not have them. We ordered dessert. Nearly a half hour later
the waitress came back, told us she got side tracked and asked if
we still wanted it. She brought the drinks cold and then, finally, the
cake. It was very good I must admit, but over all the experience
was bad. I would not call it a tea room. More of a place to eat that has a
slightly larger than normal selection of tea.
Would you go back? Sorry, no.

an elite club, yet when you want to dawdle and enjoy
your tea/meal, there is no pressure to move along! Presentation, quality of tea/food is very good, and the
ambience is an 'eye candy' experience. Lots to look at,
since the decor is very victorian/shabby chic style, with
some items for sale; i.e., teas, lavender, and unique tea

soups-roasted red pepper my favorite. Don't wait to visit!

Comments: M-Bellish offers a variety of teas to choose
from. We opted for their Savory Tea which consists of
an assortment of finger sandwiches on a variety of
breads (cucumber & cream cheese, smoked turkey &
Dijon, cream cheese & mandarin oranges, tuna,
chicken salad with cranberries, and vegetable & cream
cheese) served with tea. Beautifully presented on charming serving dishes with lace doilies
and a sprig of fresh green grapes these sandwichs were a delight to
the palate. They were delicate and melt in your mouth
delicious. The tea was perfectly brewed. The atmosphere is relaxing and quaint with a hodge podge
assortment of mismatched antiques and comfy chairs.
Candles, fresh roses, a cozy curtained nook with a fireplace and velvet
sofas, we didn't want to leave! They offer for sale tea
accessories, antiques and a variety of loose tea.
The service was impeccable, welcoming and
friendly, this family run tea room & cafe is a real gem!

Tea: Excellent. Food: Excellent. Service:

Comments: A sunny day in February, 2003
was a great day to go for tea. Nancy and I decided
to celebrate her 11th birthday by going to tea at
an Irish tea room located near Yale University. We
found it to be excellent in all ways. The tea
sandwiches consisted of ham and cheese on Irish
brown bread, garnished with half a cherry tomato
(all sandwiches were served on this bread),
peppered turkey and cheese, smoked salmon with a
tiny wedge of lemon and parsley, and cucumber. We
were each served two of each type. The scones were
served with raspberry jam and clotted cream. These
had just come in fresh from the bakery and were
warmed up. For dessert were four chocolate petit
fours. The tea we chose was Irish Afternoon tea
from Bewley's. This was served in a French press.
The tea was more than substantial, satiating our
hunger. The tea room is small, only seven tables
covered in burgundy cloths and glass on top.
Pictures of Ireland adorn the mustard-colored
walls. Playing in the background was Irish music.
The front of the tea room is filled with Irish
imports, beautiful shawls, sweaters, hats,
jewelry, and china. Irish linen fills an armoire.
Telling Nancy I was writing a review, she asked if
I wanted any quotes from her. I said,
"yes." Nancy said "The tea was
delicious and I give it four stars." I asked
out of how many and she said "Four."
Could a bigger compliment ever be given?

with many of their finds available for sale. It is really a
treasure. I have been there three times since coming upon

sandwiches and pastries along with a variety of teas
brewed in individual pots. You are seated in a warm, cozy

Comments: The Enchanted Teapot was a cute idea
that just does not work. The ladies were not very friendly
and seemed quite overwhelmed with even the simplest
question, like, "what is the sandwich of the day". They
ran out of scones, lemonade and turkey sandwiches.
We had a 9 year old boy with us and they took it upon
themselves, with kind intentions i guess, to cchange the
food to suit what they thought hed like. The service was
excruciatingly slow, the food medeocre at best and the
decor busy and unsophisticated. That being said, if they
would only get their act together it would be a rather
sweet idea and one of the ladies was nice to our little
boy. If your looking for a very leisurly, not too upscale,
inexpensive tea shop and have all the time in teh world,
this may just be the place for you!

Comments: This tea house is just adorable. The
atmosphere replicates the tea house craze of the 1920's. The
decor and table settings are well done with lace, linen and hand crafted tableware. What adds to
the atmosphere are the many glass, ceramic, handmade items, cards and pictures that decorate the
sitting areas. Greeted with shortbread tea shaped cookies and followed by a generous sandwich, chips
and apple slices that were more than adequate for a
hungry appetite. Tea was served in large teapots and an
assortment of dessert pasteries rounded out the meal.
What a deal. It was fabulous and a must for family and

and stuff, exciting at first but maybe a little overwhelming
then. The two sisters that own the store are cute and very polite but could use a little warmth in
their welcome. Tea is simple and great in a doll house
environment, but the mini sandwiches are sometimes
difficult to identify (for those that don't like Tuna or

unimpressed. There is no charm, no personality and not

things perfect. I thing they really try to make it perfect
but miss the boat on the important things. They need to
relax a little and make people feel welcome. Make the

Comments: This was a return trip. Our first experience
at this tea room was positive. One of the reasons I
enjoy tea rooms is because they afford an opportunity
to relax and enjoy the atmosphere and the people you
are with. My major complaint on this visit was the fact
that while I was still eating, no less than 4 times the
wait staff came to clear the table. My partner was
finished his meal but I was still eating. Each time I
politely told them I was still eating but within minutes,
they returned to clear the table. There was nobody
waiting for the table and in fact there were 3 empty

This colored my opinion of the tea room. It was not
