Comments: Smelled of coffee and some kind
of herbs, not like tea. That is a big turn-off at a
tea store. The lady was very pushy to get me to buy
something. Tea comes in a bag that is not good for
storage so unless you have something at home to
store it in you have to buy something extra. They
did have a lot of nice gift things, and the outside
area is pretty. The teas I bought were good when I
brewed them at home.

April, 2010. Meal: Afternoon tea. Type of tea:

In a teapot.
Tea: Excellent. Food: Good.
Service: Fair. Appearance: Good.
Comments: I agree with some of the reviews. We had great
sandwiches, and had plenty of them. We went to the $20
Afternoon Tea. She served us many different sandwiches which
were not soggy. The scone was microwaved and obviously
made from a mix, but it was fine. We were only offered 1, but
we could have asked for more. The desserts I agree with
another reviewer. Boxed cookies, dry, bland cake and weird
other types of desserts. I was hoping for mini tarts or
something homemade, which there were none. Also the
hostess rushed us out. she told me to come around 2:30-3, but
the tea takes at least an hour to eat, and apparently she
closes at 4, and expects you to leave at 4. I felt put off by that
and rushed. Also she didn't seem overly friendly and we
had two infants who were really well-behaved, and I think she was a
little irritated with that. I think if I go again I
will get the sandwiches, tea and scones, but no desserts and go earlier.
There was no one else there.
Would you go back? Maybe

Comments: I was looking forward to my first afternoon tea at
Helen's based on the positive reviews on this website.
Unfortunately, I was deeply disappointed by the pre-made (as
in cookies out of a box) desserts, soggy finger sandwiches, dry
cake, as well as the fact that afternoon tea consisted of a
microwaved scone, soggy sandwiches, and cookies/dry cake.
This tea is completely overpriced ($20/person) for what it
is -- mostly sweets (again premade or held over from however many
days ago). We left hungry and very disappointed. The tables for
tea service were filled with boxes for the candy bouquet
assembly and the owner asked us to choose a table before
then moving the boxes out of the way. I think they should skip
the 'free' lollipops they handed us at the beginning of the tea in
exchange for offering fresh, homemade food items.
Would you go back? Sorry, no.

Comments: Paula is a terrific hostess: friendly with
warm smiles and pleasant conversation. My son and I enjoyed the
blueberry ice wine tea and the peach rooibos tea along with our "afternoon tea" which

clotted cream and jam, as well as many types of cookie

only 3 pieces of tiny tiny sandwiches for each person
the rest was sweets, I think store bought mini muffins
After that 1 each of a plain microwaved scone with jelly

Comments: How would you like to be
transported to Belgium without crossing the
Atlantic Ocean? By visiting Belgique Salon de Thé
in Kent, CT you will have done so. Situated at the
intersections of Routes 7 and 314 at the monument
is a restored Victorian house, circa 1898. The
vibrant yellow stately mansion seems to draw you
in like Alice's looking glass to see what is
inside this magnificent house. Pierre Gilissen,
the owner, ushered us into a room with four tables
and a settee near a bay window. He said we could
chose any table we wanted, and since it was a
birthday celebration for me, I chose a table
against the wall with a huge hanging tapestry
behind me. The room was decorated in red, yellow,
and gold in the grand European style. Having only
been open since April, 2003 for afternoon tea,
lunch, and dinner, the place sparkled with newness
and freshness. Diane, my friend, being her guest,
insisted I opt for the Grand Tea since it was my
birthday, versus ordering the Petit Tea. Belgique
has only seven tables, so there is a $30 per
person charge per table. They welcome guests
twelve years of age and above.
In selecting our teas, Diane chose Darjeeling and
I chose decaf Ceylon. The tea was served to us by
Pierre himself, always there to refill our cups as
needed. While classical music and opera played
quietly in the background, we ate tea sandwiches
of egg salad, cucumber, Norwegian salmon (deemed
superior to Scottish salmon we agreed) and cream
cheese, watercress, and cream cheese, and a
miniature boat of endive filled with tuna and tied
with a single strand of chive. Presentation
deserved an A-plus. Pear with pecan on crusty
French bread with imported bleu cheese was superb.
There was also a paté (made on the premises) of
beef and pork with pistachios on a baguette, and
tomato and cream cheese sandwich. A delectable
thin cheese straw completed the sandwich course.
Served on a separate plate were four freshly made
briôches, with little ceramic pots of apricot and
strawberry jams. For dessert, fruit/pound cake,
baby madeleines, chocolate mousse cookies,
chocolate swirl twill cookies, and one with "Sacher"
written in gold script on a chocolate tart, pecan
shortbreads, meringues, cherry tarts, almond
tulle, maroon cookies, and puff pastry with a
cherry. A Grand Tea in the true sense!
After all this, to my surprise, I was presented
with a chocolate mousse birthday cake with a
slender candle in it. What a tea experience!
Pierre boxed up all our remainders for us to take
home. Now whenever I want to be transported to the
fine dining of Europe, specifically Belgium, I
will find my way out into the country to a gem of
a place tucked away in the hills of NW
Connecticut. p.s. Don't forget to pay a visit to
the Belgique Patisserie & Chocolatier in the
carriage house behind the Victorian house.

Comments: Not what I expected. The tea selection was larger than
a diner ... that is about all I can say. It was very limited. The tea
they had was good though. They did not have "teacups". The big
lug of mugs they served us in were too heavy for my daughter.
Instead of bringing her a teacup they brought her a plain mug. They
served my daughter boxed (I asked the waitress if it was
homemade and she said kraft) mac and cheese. It came with a
side of fruit ... half a sliced banana. We wanted scones and
such ... they did not have them. We ordered dessert. Nearly a half hour later
the waitress came back, told us she got side tracked and asked if
we still wanted it. She brought the drinks cold and then, finally, the
cake. It was very good I must admit, but over all the experience
was bad. I would not call it a tea room. More of a place to eat that has a
slightly larger than normal selection of tea.

Comments: A sunny day in February, 2003
was a great day to go for tea. Nancy and I decided
to celebrate her 11th birthday by going to tea at
an Irish tea room located near Yale University. We
found it to be excellent in all ways. The tea
sandwiches consisted of ham and cheese on Irish
brown bread, garnished with half a cherry tomato
(all sandwiches were served on this bread),
peppered turkey and cheese, smoked salmon with a
tiny wedge of lemon and parsley, and cucumber. We
were each served two of each type. The scones were
served with raspberry jam and clotted cream. These
had just come in fresh from the bakery and were
warmed up. For dessert were four chocolate petit
fours. The tea we chose was Irish Afternoon tea
from Bewley's. This was served in a French press.
The tea was more than substantial, satiating our
hunger. The tea room is small, only seven tables
covered in burgundy cloths and glass on top.
Pictures of Ireland adorn the mustard-colored
walls. Playing in the background was Irish music.
The front of the tea room is filled with Irish
imports, beautiful shawls, sweaters, hats,
jewelry, and china. Irish linen fills an armoire.
Telling Nancy I was writing a review, she asked if
I wanted any quotes from her. I said,
"yes." Nancy said "The tea was
delicious and I give it four stars." I asked
out of how many and she said "Four."
Could a bigger compliment ever be given?

located within a shop featuring British teas,
foods, gifts, jewelry, and antiques. The menu
features such things as elevenses, ploughman's,
scones with clotted cream and jelly, at very
reasonable prices. The tea was served loose in the
pot with hot water available to be added as
desired. Little floral bachelor cozies covered the
individual two-cup tea pots. I enjoyed the very
casual atmosphere, the unhurried feeling, the
accommodating hostess, and the shopping. Putnam is
a little town with many antique shops. Before or

Comments: Taking my mother-in-law out for a surprise lunch,
this place turned out to be the perfect place. Coming from
Hartford, the ride there was picturesque and very easy to find.
The tea was perfect & the food was deliciouse, although quite
substantial. We chose the soup and 1/2 sandwich and still
brought home doggey bags. The only difficulty was the
accessiblility into the tea room. It is not handicap accessible,
and the walk up along with the steps and narrow door
openings, made it a challenge. Biggest surprise - they DO NOT
take CHARGE CARDS (cash only)! They also have no take
out, both lunch and desserts. We were full from lunch and
would have liked to take home some dessert. Still we
definetly will go back.

all on grilled thick sliced bread. I had a half sandwich
(which was so large, I had to cut IT in half) along with

Excellent. Appearance: Excellent.
Comments: I go to Chaiwalla regularly to
enjoy the drive, ambiance, informal and cozy
atmosphere, energetic hostess: Mary'O Brien! Great
selection of teas. Consistent excellent quality!
Don't forget to have the outrageously yummy, moist
Whisky cake (yeah, you read it right).
