This was her Christmas gift to us. We enjoyed the Marie

Everything was excellent especially the scones.

Comments: Tea began with a wonderful vanilla scone.
Sandwiches, salads and soup were also very good. Dessert
was something flavored with passionfruit and not to my liking.
Service is excellent and the decor beautiful. Small gift shop at
the front with many tempting items. I have visited 4 times and
each visit has been lovely. Will return again soon.

Comments: This is the loveliest tea experience I have enjoyed in
the U.S. My sisters and I were in Paris in the fall and when
we discovered Paris in a Cup knew we had to try it. It is located next
to an Army/Navy store in Old Town Orange but that is
the only speck of criticism I can muster. The exterior is very appealing.
You enter through the gift shop and are taken to the
beautiful tearoom behind. The bronze and white color scheme is gorgeous
but comfortable. The food was very good. The potato soup was
excellent, scones warm and tasty, nice variety of sandwiches.
They even made the egg salad good and it's something I never
eat. Petit fours for desserts were delicious. I had the vanilla tea
which reminds me of Harrod's vanilla tea. The service was
professional and friendly. We could not have asked for more.

Comments: The scones (especially the

Comments: My mother, sister and I go to tea about 4-5 times a

especially love the black/white uniform idea which made it a lit more

Comments: As avid tea enthusiasts, we were excited
to have an afternoon tea celebration for Mother's Day.
What we actually experienced left everyone in our party
very disappointed and resolved never to patronize this
tea room again. We had an 11 am reservation and when
our party arrived, they had us down for noon. They
offered 2 small tables (both by the kitchen and, therefore, loud!). We ordered the Afternoon Tea Service
with a variety of their sandwiches (salmon (average),
Meditteranean (skimpy on the filling), Punjab (more
mayo than anything else) and Souchong). The Chado Creme was very good and the highlight of the entire tea
service. We tried the Mate Carnival, the Apricot Brandy
(very good!), and Earl Grey. The tables were crowded
which compounded the noise level of the kitchen and
made conversation difficult. The party next to us
mentioned the lack of space (and we were close enough
to hear their entire conversation without straining). Not
one person checked on us after the food arrived so one
small pot of tea is all we got to enjoy. After being
ignored for the entire hour, we requested the check. The
cashier could not (or would not) walk through the tables
to place our check on the table. Instead, she reached
over the party next to us, waved, and had someone in
our party reach over to grab the check! Overall, food not
worth it, service seriously lacking, and you can always
buy your tea from here to go! Either way, you will feel
packed and rushed here....not a way to enjoy tea!
Would you go back? Sorry, no.

Comments: This tea room in Pasadena was
excellent!! I have tea usually once a week and
this was my first experience at Chado. The service
was a little slow and not as personal as in the
Victorian style tea room that I am used to, but
the food and tea were fabulous! Also, they had so

Comments: I visited the newly opened
Chado Tea Room in Pasadena today. I have long been
familiar with Chado in Los Angeles and have
recommended them many times. This tea room is
every bit as fine as the original and offers an
extensive selection of fine loose teas to appeal
to every taste. As it is in Old Town Pasadena one
might find the parking a bit troublesome if one is
not familiar with the area, but I would advise
parking in one of the central parking lots and
spending an afternoon in Old Town just walking
around in addition to visiting Chado Tea Room.
Chado is not far off Colorado and is really near
the center of things to see and do. The tea
was properly prepared, the food excellent and
beautifully presented. The service was excellent.
I came away with several selections of teas and a
determination to revisit Chado many times.

larger low tables surrounded by sofas. Elegant and

sandwiches are tasty with a California flair
(hearts of palm and asparagus). The scones are not
warm, but are of a nice texture and sweetness. The
tiny desserts are scrumptious: thumbsized creme
brulee, banana bread, fresh made apricot cookies,
two bite blackberry cheesecakes are some of the
regular fare. The ladies serving tea are expert at
pampering and don't turn a hair at special

Comments: Three of us enjoyed a lovely tea this rainy
Saturday afternoon having called yesterday and been
encouraged to call this morning on the chance of a
cancellation. Success! I have moved from the area and
had not been to Rose Tree Cottage for about 15 years.
Our experience was delightful from the exploring the
shop, to chatting with one of the owners and visiting the
shop cat. They serve their own blend of tea which is
strong but I like it that way. The food was delicious,
even the egg sandwiches which I usually dislike. We did
not feel rushed, our tea was always hot, and the sticky
toffee was a treat. One of the 4 staff we encountered
seemed less friendly than the rest; I am hoping it just
wasn't her day. Great health department rating too!

Comments: The Rose Tree Cottage is a
cultural experience and is the most British of the
various Los Angeles tea rooms that I frequent.
Less variety and more tradition. The sandwiches
are plain good English food. My favorite is the
Stilton cheese, but they may have changed. The
scones are served hot and with the proper clotted
cream and thick jam. The service is flawless. The
sweets are not the sophisticated desserts of the
Ritz, but the treacle has the taste of the UK! A
charming experience.

Comments: After reading such great
things in the book Best Tea Rooms in America
I couldn't wait to go to Rose Tree Cottage. We
were on vacation and it was my first time in
California. What a disappointment, this was the
worst afternoon tea I have ever experienced. We
were greeted by the most unfriendly people when we
arrived. When my husband took a picture of my
ten-year old daughter and me sitting at the table
we were told we could not take pictures. Hello, it
was a picture of me and my daughter. The Yorkshire
pudding was the only thing that was really good.
The atmosphere was so unfriendly and tense that I
could not enjoy myself and could not wait to
leave. It is not worth the $30 per person. I would
never recommend this tea room to anyone.

Comments: Rose Tree Cottage is a
break from our hectic world. Calm,
beautiful, delightfully decorated. Tea is serviced
leisurely from a giant teapot with delicious
sandwiches and scones and cake and pastries. The
scones are fresh and hot and accompanied by the

will want to take some home. Other British food
available in the charming shop are bangers,
clotted cream, sticky toffee pudding, spotted
dick, mustards and teas from all parts of the

Comments: I have been to this tea
house several times now. I love that they serve
you the tea, never leave it on the table to get
cold, and that it is always HOT. My disappointment
lies in the fact that because it has gotten so
popular, it is impossible to get in on short
notice. I have called THREE times in the last two
months and have been told that they are either
fully booked, or closed for a private party. The
person answering the telephone is always rather
gruff and unfriendly. Sad ... I used to love the
graciousness and sense of welcome that the Rose

reviewers that a lot has changed since I last
visited the Rose Tree. But I will keep trying to

Comments: After reading so much
about Rose Tree Cottage in the pages of Victoria
magazine, visiting their website, and even seeing
a segment highlighting Rose Tree Cottage on HGTV,
I felt I had to pay this shop and tea room a visit
during my trip to Pasadena, California. I was
absolutely thrilled to find a slice of England in
the midst of California! The shop itself is
quintessentially English and very charming! You
enter the building which looks literally like an
English cottage with climbing roses all over. It
was tucked off the street several yards, but the
British flag flying in front was an instant clue I
had found the place. When I stepped inside Mary
and Edmund Fry, the proprietors, greeted me
warmly, making me feel right at home, showing me
around. Mary even brought me a cup of their
special Rose Tree Cottage blend tea with some of
their special shortbread. It is now a firm
favorite. I confess I have air expressed their
scones from the "food hall" and several
of their teas. They are the best I've had in the
U.S. and well worth it. Their shortbread is fresh
and a far cry from the boxed shortbreads on the
market. After choosing several gift and food
items, Edmund invited me to sit at one of the
tables with him and enjoy my cup of tea and
shortbread. Although they were not serving tea
that day, they hoped I would be able to return to
experience what I am confident would be a very
special ritual. Edmund and Mary gave me a tour of
the rooms where afternoon tea is served. It looked
delightful. I cannot wait to return. In my
opinion, this is what a tea room and British store
should be all about! Highly recommended!!!!

Comments: I am in a group of six
ladies who, once a month, visit tea rooms in
southern California. We arrived early (1pm was
tea) and looked through the gift shop and English
food products for about a half hour before leaving
the shop and going through the two small antique
shops in front of the tea room. Upon our return
(on time), we waited in line for approximately ten
minutes before we were allowed into the tea room.
We had to sit at two tables, since no tables were
large enough to accommodate our party of six;
fortunately they were close to each other. Tea was
poured (no choice of tea) and it was very hot and
delicious. One of our ladies asked for decaf tea
and when Mrs. Fry returned with a teapot, she
poured what looked like water into our lady's cup.
It was not given time to steep. The sandwiches
were aplenty, but not very good, except for their
special roast beef on a small roll with a
delightful sauce (only one apiece, unfortunately!)
The scones and deserts were a disappointment also.
Mr. Fry delighted in telling us about all the
famous people who had taken tea in his tea room.
We really were not impressed, except all of us
were certain that we were sitting in the same
chair that John Travolta had sat in! Tea was
constantly refilled and it was hot; the only
delightful experience this afternoon. You can be
certain that we will not return to this
"famous" tea room.

Comments: The Rose Tree Cottage is
a charming cottage in the heart of Pasadena. The
tea room is in a craftsmen (1910) cottage court
with a rose garden and a great walkway. The tea
room is a warm and cozy trip back to a bygone era,
Edmound and Mary are charming, and the tea and
food is presented in a grand manor and is very
good. Sitting in the tea room lets you forget that
the busy world is just outside the door.
Everything from the décor to the English kitty
sleeping in garden takes you away. The gift shop
is all English from the china tea service to the
watercolors for sale, all chosen by Mary Fry very
carefully. Tea rooms are my passion and The Rose
Tree Cottage is a tea room that appeals to all
your senses.

Comments: My main complaint is the
impersonal service. As mentioned in the previous
review, there is no choice of tea, or even a menu
to preview what you will be served. The hostess
comes around and pours tea at every table,
deposits sandwiches, drops off some scones and
finally, the sweets, with hardly a word. The food
was tasty but not outstanding, and the tea was a
nice house blend (which we had to ask to find
out). But I didn't feel particularly welcome or
comfortable. I felt like I was on a tea room

tea. I recently took a friend there because I had
been raving about it. This time we were not given
a choice of tea -- not even asked if we needed
decaf tea which was quite surprising. The food was
good but not as excellent as the first time I'd

English-looking cottage so it's delightful to

Comments: NEVER AGAIN !! The tea, sorbet,

sole reason I will NEVER RETURN is the poor customer
service we were given. As soon as I walked in the
door, with the door not yet closed behind me, I was stopped
in mid-step by the general manager and one of the waitresses who began to interrogate me about the
details and the correctness of my reservation, with my
party seated at a table just a few feet away. The general
manager wanted to argue with me and insisted everyone
in my party order only the tea ceremony and I pay more
than what was ordered due to a simple misunderstanding in the reservation. She did this in front
of all her other customers and in front of my guest of
honor seated right next to me. This was VERY EMBARRASSING. To make the matter worse, the
manager proceeded to make DISGUSTING GESTURES & FACIAL EXPRESSIONS and harsh eye contact for
the entire duration of our tea!

they seemed to have only one server for the tea

delay in both taking our order and delivery of the

Comments: I took a friend with me to the
Tea Rose Garden on a day that we both desperately
needed a treat. I had never been before and I was
incredibly pleased with my time there. The tea
shop is charming, the food is wonderful, and the
atmosphere is relaxed and intimate. We loved it
... We had the afternoon tea, which came with
little pots of loose and flavorful tea, hearty
scones (the best are the chocolate chip with
melted chocolate begging to be savored), little
sweets, and best of all -- the tastiest finger
sandwiches that I had EVER had! I kid you not --
THESE are the real deal. We left the Tea Rose, on
a gloomy January day, happy and sated.

Comments: My first experience with
afternoon tea was at this quaint florist. It
definitely left a fond impression and it made me
appreciate it even more when I had a chance to be
in England and experience the real deal. I
returned this December to Tea Rose Garden and
brought three additional girlfriends who all
thoroughly enjoyed the ambiance, food, and
service. Finger sandwiches were delicious; I
especially like their chicken and almond and
chicken and watercress. The teas were fragrant.
The best is their hot scones and clotted cream. I
would highly recommend this place to anyone.

Comments: Tea Rose Garden offers a cozy
and elegant afternoon tea selection. The staff is
helpful and willing to address questions,
especially when hosting a private party as I did.
There are two areas of the shop for seating; the
front is charming with tables for tea and
collectibles, and there is a secluded garden in
the back for private parties, both with central
water fountains. Tea Rose Garden is also a
full-service florist and there were lovely
arrangements on each table. In the future, I would
definitely enjoy hosting another event at this
location. It is one of the only teahouses in the
Pasadena area that offers both space for private
parties and unlimited servings of tea, sandwiches,
scones, etc.

Comments: I did not have the chance to
visit with them. I made a reservation two weeks in
advance for a Mother's Day gift for six friends. I
called to see if I could change the reservation to
a couple of hours later when they informed me that
they had taken me off the schedule because they
had a party of forty that they wanted to fit in.
If I would not have called, I would not have
known. I think this is pitiful customer relations
on their part. I have selected a couple of places
from your site to call to see if I can get this
tea party together in such short time.

Comments: This small tea room is located
in quaint downtown Pleasanton. The tea room is
very charming, and has been lovingly decorated
with pastel colors, comfortable and elegant
furniture, and hand painted details. In addition
to the tables decorated with fresh flowers and tea
candles, there is also seating on comfortable
upholstered chairs. I loved the décor, and after
the tea my sister and I spent enjoyable moments
looking at the available selection of unusual tea
related gifts.
The teas and food were delicious. Before our meal
began, we were treated to a tea tasting. Then we
were served a small, warm scone with crčme frâiche,
lemon curd, and preserves along with a variety of
delicious tea sandwiches and warm tidbits. The
meal ended with petit fours and cookies.
The presentation tray was sprinkled with rose
petals which gave it a romantic look. The place is
absolutely spotless, and the service attentive,
friendly and first class. I definitely plan to
return to
enjoy tea with my friends!

Comments: Since my Red Hat girlfriends had never
been to a French-deco tea parlor, we had to check it
out. My mother is always bragging about one she goes
to on the east coast so now I get to brag back! The
decor was very chic with black table cloths, white
doillies, crystal wares, etc. We each got to steep our
own pot of tea (with training by hostesses) and the
scones were wonderful. The sandwiches were so good I
brought my friend back the next day for their chicken
salad sandwich (full size) in their separate cafe (the
beautiful tea parlor is in the back of their establishment).
I've never had sliced grapes in my chicken salad before
and it was addicting! We also dressed up in their vanity
closet (well we added a little jewelry 'cause we were
already fairly decked out). I didn't like the idea at first
but when I finally gave in, I couldn't stop smiling with
joy. We all had a wonderful experience there. Now I
have a good excuse to get my mom to fly out here for
the next family visit.

The owner visited us frequently to ensure everything was
OK (and it was). The food was very good. The music
was a bit loud at first but they turned it down without
hesitation upon request. One of our sisters was having a
bad personal day and wanted to push it off on the owner
and staff and they took it in stride and handled her well.
Although we were all full (happily), some of us stopped
in their ice cream parlor on the way out and finished off
with a scoop of Gunthers ice cream! That was filling! We
also bought several great ornaments and a tea set in

Comments: This past year I've been given
the oppertunity to visit several tea rooms in the
California area, with each experiance this tea
room moves further down on my list. This time it
was a birthday lunch for a friend. Admittedly got
lost and were 10 min late getting there (we called
beforehand). The shop was nicely decorated, looks
as though they at max could serve about 20 people.
Which on this day they had two other parties. We
waited another 10 min before being greated, and
another 5
before someone walked up to the counter to ask us
if we needed assistance to which when we told her
what we were there for she pointed to the tea
behind her and asked what tea we wanted. The wall
was filled was filled from floor to ceiling with
many lovely looking teas, however with no
discriptions you had to rely on the name which
everyone knows can be diseaving. We were never
told to pick out our tea cup or that we could try
on the hats and gloves, which it looked like
everyone had done. The food was good, nothing
great. The cranberry scones I believe had 1
cranberry in it and was served cold. Also I prefer
black teas and being served in the pot and not
decanted after the first cup it was VERY bitter.
the service once seated was good, although owner
instead of patiently waiting for us to finish a
sentence would interupt to talk to us. The tea
room in Folsom was so much better. I would rather
go there than repeat a visit here.

As stated by a previous reviewer, scones were

that is brewed and decanted; I dislike having to
strain each time I pour. I think, and many experts
purport this viewpoint, that leaving the tea
leaves in the pot makes for bitter tea after
awhile. Personal preference, I suppose. The

were not told that we could wear the hats that

My only complaint is that I really love good tea and they use teabags

The food is very good and there is a good variety. I enjoy their salads,
soups, quiches and some of the hot dishes including the
shepherd's pie and Chicken Julie. The scones are good,
especially with the lemon curd. I wish they were open till 5 so
we could go for afternoon tea. This place is quite feminine, but I
do see some men there each time I go. There are enough
menu selections that men will like. I'm not as well versed on

Comments: If any of you have ever been to
the old Ticky Boo tea room in Carlsbad, then you
already have an idea of what Posh Peasant looks
like. The outside of the building was very
unpretentious. It doesn't let on how much like a
secret garden the inside looks. It's delightful!
Frou-frou galore! It's very feminine and flowery,
and eclectic. The walls were covered in ladies'
hats, groups of china saucers surrounded by a
picture frame, and beautiful floral arrangements
abound. The ceiling is covered with crystal
chandeliers, at least ten of them. There are three
back rooms. One had a circle of comfortable cozy
chairs with a small coffee table in the center. It
looked so relaxing.
Service was a little slow due to only one server
for all the tables. Even during the middle of the
week, it was busy at lunchtime. We ordered our
first pot of tea, the Posh Peasant Blend. The
flavor was passion fruit, pomegranate, and
vanilla. It was a wonderful soft fruit flavor, and
then the vanilla came out. Yum. Our second pot was
The Queens Garden (or something like that). It was
Earl Grey with jasmine but way too strong for the
afternoon. They have many choices of tea,
including some estate teas. It would be worth
going back just to try more.
Our sandwiches were served in individual silver
bonbon trays with the handle in the center. Very
different. I must say these were the best
sandwiches I've had in a while. Deviled ham,
chicken and dill, and we think a very lightly
flavored albacore. Not fishy at all. Our currant
scones were served with real Devon cream, which
was like a butter, and a strawberry jam. It came
with a strawberry that was sliced with the stem
on, so it fanned out and was very
pretty. We each had a small lemon tart with a rich
raspberry stuck in the center. The pastry was the
best I've had. We each ordered the Sampler Tea,
which was $12.75. The Afternoon Tea, which
includes cookies and breads, was $20.75. If you
could tell by all our giggles and laughter, we had
a great time at Posh.

Comments: Tucked midway between San Diego
and Los Angeles, in the quaint village of San
Clemente, is The Posh Peasant's Tea Room.
"Unpretentious" is the perfect way to
describe this hide-a-way. The tea room is divided
into several themed rooms. There is the 'Living
Room', 'Garden Room', 'Kitchen' and 'Sitting
Room'. The unique moss and flower covered tables
give the feeling of being in a garden. I sat in
the Garden Room where a mural of the 'Four
Seasons' adorns one of the walls. Antiques are
sprinkled throughout the store as well as
collectibles and gifts for sale. A group of ladies
from the local convalescent home were also
enjoying a tea party in the next room. They had
each donned one of the many hats available for
just such an occasion.
As I looked over the menu I had a difficult
decision to make. Should I choose the traditional
tea items or lunch. The aroma of "Cream of
Roasted Red Pepper Soup" filled the air
tantalizing my taste buds. I finally decided on
the Afternoon Tea with a pot of "Posh Peasant
Blend", which I was told, was a blend of
pomegranate, passion fruit, and vanilla. As I was
waiting for my tea I was invited to explore the
many nooks and crannies of the tea room. I found
just what I had been looking for, a cobalt blue
pitcher, tucked away in the kitchen. After my find
was purchased my tea was ready. As the server
poured my tea the smell was heavenly. As is the
custom the tea is steeped in a cotton tea sock and
when it is delivered to your table it is leaf free
and ready to drink. Next came my food. A
three-tiered tray came filled with tea sandwiches
of chicken with rosemary, cucumber and mint
butter, deviled ham, egg salad, and cream cheese
and chive, a selection of tea breads, warm scones
accompanied by clotted cream and jam, the best
lemon curd tarts this tea totaller has ever
tasted, and last but certainly not least the
homemade truffles. The strains of Andrea Bocelli,
Mozart and Sarah Brightman filled the air as I
feasted making this a most pleasant afternoon. If

Comments: Sorry folks, I can't give this a great review. I
took a girlfriend there (with a reservation) for a BD around
2:00 and had marginal service and food, with no BD
amenities. The staff was preoccupied with cleaning the back
door area and doing the books and didn't seem to know
where to seat us (we were the only one's there). We had to
keep asking for water (it was a a warm day) and then were
told they didn't have ice and only got a small glass. The
server didn't know the menu or want to do any options. We
asked if they were closing, they said no. Though the space
is well decorated and pretty, I thought the space was
cramped and the food was just OK. They were nice, but not
"there." Thankfully, it was relatively inexpensive. Maybe I
just caught them on a bad day, but I've heard others
complain as well and say they wouldn't go back. Not good
for a local place!
Would you go back? Sorry, no.

Comments: What a perfect way to spend an afternoon!
The decor is elegant, yet cozy, warm and comfortable.
The place settings and centerpieces and beautiful.
There are numerous choices of teas and most can be
decaffeinated upon request. The food is plentiful and
delicious. I've had the Afternoon Tea twice and there
was a different variation each time with the savorie and
dessert selection, so no matter how often you return,
you will always have a delectable surprise. Juliette, the
owner is a delight, along with her servers. They give you
plenty of time and space, yet seem to anticipate your
every need. I will be returning for my 3rd time in less

Comments: The tea is good but the attentive, friendly service is
what really warms you here. It is nice to go as just a group of
adults, but the value here really increases when you have a
younger tea partier. We went to celebrate with my 4 year old,
her eyes lit up as she gazed around the cottage and saw all her favorite
aunties dressed in hats and other accessories. They were very
accomadating to us and although the place is small it seems as
though, for both young and old, when you step in you leave the
world outside behind and enter a very special place where you can
just be in the moment and enjoy life to its fullest.

Comments: I
had high hopes when I entered this hunter green
and burgundy colored tea room with the lace
curtains. Even the fact that it was located in a
strip mall didn't deter me from thinking it might
be okay. They were the only place available to
take reservations on a moment's notice and now I
know why. Apparently, no one wants to go there and
I sure don't blame them. I had really "talked
up" the whole high [sic] tea
experience to my friends and now none of them are
interested in ever visiting a tea shop again! We
each paid separately for our tea services (there
were 3 of us), yet we were told that we would only
be getting TWO tea pots so we had to choose only
two types of teas. Does that make any sense? So
two of us had to compromise and share one pot.
Why, why, why??? I'm still confused about that
bizarre rule. I asked if I could have peach tea,
was told there was none, and then saw boxes of it
with my own eyes in the adjacent tea store (same
person owns and runs both places). Talk about not
even trying to make your customers happy! I asked
if we could light the candle on our table and was
told, "No, she only has that there for
decoration and we never light it." They were
just cheap, tacky red candles with a fake floral
wreath at the base!!! What's the big deal?? Maybe
the thick layer of dust on the candles should have
given me a hint that no one is allowed to touch
them -- not even with a cleaning rag. One of our
sandwiches was made from Kraft cheese (ugh!) --
I've put together yummier snacks for my kids in a
matter of seconds! The "scones" were
just dry, lukewarm buns. Gross! I still cringe
when I think about how miserable I was when I
handed over my $16 at the end of the disgusting
experience. I wish I was better at standing up for
myself, maybe I could have refused to pay ... To
this day, I am still apologizing to my friends for
having them waste their money.

However, I have just gotten back from a trip there

past, tea was included in the entrees but this time I was
charge $3.95 per tea pot!!! I have only been to 2 other
tea houses (did not charge extra for the tea) so I am not
sure if this is standard practice. However, I would
assume an entree called 'Traditional Ladies Tea' would
include tea, especially when it was $10.95. I went with 4
other women and no one remembers seeing this separate charge for tea noted on the menu. When
paying we noted surprise at the extra charge and the
lady whom I believe was the owner told us in a slightly
haughty manner that it was either increase her prices or
close her shop! So if you decide to go to this shop,
beware of the hidden charges.

The only thing I didn't love was the ham sandwich but on
the flip side the soup was fabulous. I think this tea shop

Comments: My sister and I made
arrangements to visit this tea room with our
mother for a special occasion. We specifically
chose this tearoom because of the good reviews, it
was British-owned, and the menu described
authentic British fare (being British ourselves,
we prefer to visit the more authentic tearooms). I
was very disappointed that the "Devonshire"
cream we were served with our scones was simply
plain old whipped cream. The scones were served
warm and were very tasty, but they were very small
and so were the sandwiches we were served (very
small for the price we were charged). The tea
itself was good, but when my pot was empty and I
needed more hot water, it took three times asking
the waitress before it was delivered. We were also
served the scones without any jam, and after
waiting ten minutes, we took a pot from another
table. What we were hoping would be an outstanding
experience turned out to be a disappointment.

really looking forward to the exceptional food and
inviting atmosphere that had been advertised. [Note
from the Editor of TeaGuide: All reviews are the opinions of the

was wonderful, the actual teas we chose were
rather weak and flavorless. The finger sandwiches
were, for the most part, bland and flavorless as
well. The one saving grace appeared at the end of
our tea, when we were each served a scrumptious
little scone with strawberry jam and cream. Tea
& Teacups had a nice, cozy atmosphere though
it was a little too crowded and noisy to be a

Comments: The food was mostly delicious. The orange-cranberry scone, however, lacked flavor, was dry and
crumbly. The tea was was loose-leaf and served with a tea
cosy. The latter would have been good except they served the
tea undecanted (leaves still in the pot) so the tea became
astringent and bitter and tasted "stewed". A major minus to our
experience resulted from an apparent misunderstanding with
the tea room manager about the reservation. There was a
feeling after our conversation with her she would accomodated
us begrudgingly. We felt shamed instead of welcomed. Our
server apologized to us that she had been instructed by this
manager to serve us last, even though we were the first party to
arrive. We were also served less food than the other
patrons. Although we had plenty to eat, we politely requested a discount
of the full tea price as we did not receive the same tea the other
customers did. The server said she had been told to charge us
the full amount, anyway.

Comments: This was my first experience
taking tea at this place. The tea room was kind of
dark, which I didn't particularly like, but it was
nicely decorated. The food was good but the menu
was set, no choices, no substitutes. They offer
"high" tea and afternoon tea. The only
difference is a shot glass of sherry, which
isn’t a high tea. The service was okay. We
didn't feel rushed or anything like that. The tea
was good but it was served in a silver teapot. I
would have preferred a china teapot and I would
have preferred to choose the type of tea. All in
all it was a fun experience but if I was to rate
this tea room on a five star scale I would have to
give it two and a half.

Comments: My friends and I had a
wonderful British tea at Shakespeare's. We were
seated outside on a deck, enjoying the nice San
Diego breeze from the bay. Inside the shop is an
anglophile's food dream. Everything is imported
from England. All our food was cooked fresh and
each sandwich had its own distinctive taste. The
tea was brewed with loose tea leaves; we had the
Darjeeling and Earl Grey. The scones were
delicious with thick Devon cream and English jam. The
desserts were all really interesting. Selina, the
manager, brings all kinds of sweets and goodies
from England, and serves it as our dessert. The
best part was we could go into the shop afterwards
and buy it all to take home. You can also buy
frozen pasties, bangers, shepherd's pie, and other
British yummies. Selina was delightful. Just
listening to her British accent was nice but she
also stood and talked to us awhile, and shared her
beginnings with the new shop. This is not a
frou-frou shop, but if you want a truly British
afternoon tea, this is the place to go. The prices
are really reasonable too. We TRULY wish her well,
and hope she stays around for a long time. The
shop is located next to the Shakespeare's Pub
& Grill, which serves British food. It's close
to the San Diego Airport and just off Highway 5,
so it's close for travelers to visit.

very delightful and sitting out on the deck was a
different experience than your usual tea shop. The
food was very fresh and quite tasty, especially
the Devonshire cream and scones ... yum! I would
recommend this tea shop to everyone who visits the
San Diego area. I could go on and on about the

Comments: I had afternoon tea here on a
Friday afternoon. Tea was served in a beautiful
lobby off the main entrance, which was very nice
and quiet. They had a harpist playing for us, and
this really added to the ambiance. However, I was
very disappointed in the quality of the food and
service. The was only one choice for afternoon
tea. When my tea finally arrived it was lukewarm,
and it was difficult to get a waiter's attention.
Some time later they brought out the sandwiches on
plates. The sandwiches had been sitting around all
morning, as the bread was stale. There were a lot
of little sandwiches, but most of them were not
very good -- plum sauce and walnuts on dark bread,
and a tuna salad/cucumber, open-faced shrimp, etc.
After the sandwiches were finished, they brought
out the crumpets with marmalade, strawberry and
raspberry preserves, and a dollop of Devonshire
cream. Then came strawberries and cream, followed
by a little dessert plate of petits fours. I
usually enjoy unrushed service, but this tea took
an hour and 45 minutes simply because the staff
was so slow. Next time I'll try the Grant Hotel.

Comments: Set to melodic classical
Christmas songs floating up from a harp in the

think this tea service may sometimes be
overshadowed by one offered at the U.S. Grant

great treats! Wonderful Christmas decorations
adorned the lobby area where you were served. I am
now a great fan of each item served from the
English Breakfast I chose to the Devonshire cream
offered with the scones, and delectable
strawberry, raspberry, and orange marmalade jams.
I am not a usual tea drinker and was very

Comments: When I made reservations for
Lisa’s Tea Treasures, I found out they had three
seatings: 11am, 1.30pm, and 3.45pm. We arrived
around 3pm to browse the gift shop before the tea.
We were told we could have our afternoon tea
already if we wanted, so we were so delighted
since we were starving. Service was quick. I loved
the black and white frocks the servers wore.
The server brought in our plates in a wooden three
tiered server. It was not left with us though.
They just used it to bring the food in. We chose
My Lady’s Respite (an afternoon tea plate) for
$18.95. The menu is below and they started with
the tea, sandwiches, portabello puff, and scone.
After we ate that quickly, we were given another
plate with the sweets. Everything tasted great
flavor wise and texture. Our favorites were the
cheddar cheese and tomato sandwich and portabello
puff. The scone was also excellent, flaky and
nutty. They served us though the condiments for
the scone in just a single serving size and that
was for two people! Not good and not enough cream.
Now the tea we happened to both choose was
blackberry jasmine. The fruity aroma was wonderful
and it tasted good but just with the first cup.
They used loose tea but did not decant it for us.
They gave us an approximately six-cup teapot full
of this awesome tea and a strainer. But the thing
is, how is one supposed to drink all that tea all
at once huh? I still can’t understand why some
tearooms still serve tea this way. They should
just give a teapot of tea that has been steeped
and decanted already, or if they choose to give
the tea the way they did, then to give us an extra
teapot to decant the tea so the leaves don’t sit
there the whole time and turn the tea too bitter.
Then to add insult to injury, I had a teacup that
was chipped on the brim right smack into the part
your lip touches. It was so obvious and you could
feel its roughness when you drank the tea.
The tea room by the way served everyone in a
uniform Old Country Rose ruby pattern. I was
disappointed in this kind of tea service oversight
with the teacup and the way they served tea,
considering one of the branches was voted best tea
room in the bay area by Evening Magazine. It was
not the branch we went to though. This tea room
branch we visited was fairly new. We did
appreciate the pot being refilled when it was
getting low.
Though this tea room’s food tasted pretty good,
I must say the presentation of the sandwiches was
boring. For one thing, they all came in triangles,
and some of the bread was getting dry, and it was
all white bread! They had four triangle sandwiches
and one of the sandwiches had one piece that was
like some kind of multigrain bread, but it was
still white. The rest was all uniformly plain
white bread. It would have been better if they had
more variety of bread for the different sandwiches
and in different shapes like fingers, rectangles,
squares, and circles. Where too was the pesto tea
sandwich which they mentioned in the menu but
didn’t make it to the table? Apparently this tea
room does not pay that much attention to details.
One more thing I noticed was the lack of
ventilation in this tea room. It was getting
stuffy with all the people in there. Almost all
the tables were occupied by the time we sat down.
It needed better air conditioning or an open
window at least. It was a bit cramped in the tea
room probably because they had to maximize real
estate space. You could overhear other people’s
conversation at the tables surrounding us very
well. We happened to have been seated near the
closed window so we were spared of 360 degree
stereo sound conversations.
Overall, the experience was good. I would visit it
again if only to give it another chance and see if
it has improved. I gave a letter with this review
of their tearoom for them to consider changing
some things in their tea service to make it
better. People like me who are very much into
afternoon teas delight in visiting tea rooms and
having our own tea parties very often. We
appreciate the effort and details a tea room puts
into food presentation and tea Served. A
pleasant tea room experience is always passed on
to others, and as we well know, word of mouth is
the best form of advertisement. In behalf of your
customers and future customers, we wish this tea
room success and hope it appreciates feedback like
this.
We hope to have an overall excellent tea room
experience with Lisa’s tea treasure next time.
We'll try another franchise.

quite crowded, and we were seated on the balcony in relatively
close quarters. The tea that I had, decaf, was excellent. I was a

dry, though the preserves were excellent. The salad was ok, and
the four finger sandwiches were good. A small fruit dish was also
served. There were two choices for desert, lemon curd and
chocolate cake. I chose the cake which was adequate. Only my
husband and I ate everything. The bill was $353 for the 5 of us, that
was over $70. each. Only my niece took any champagne. This was
priciest tea that I have been to, much more costly than the superior
Tea that I had at the Empress Hotel in Victoria, BC, when we
visited there last year. I really don't feel as though we got our
money's worth at The Tea House on Los Rios.

Comments: My friend and I enjoyed a very tasty
afternoon tea, from the scones and cream, the special
Rooibos Bourbon Vanilla tea (even bought some to take
home!), the finger sandwiches and the very yummy desserts (we
tried the lemon tart and fruit parfait, which we shared). We were pleasantly pleased with the
service and the food. Can't wait to go back when my

Comments: I visited this tea house a few years ago and
it was good. However, this time I was disapointed. The
scones were fine & nice in size. But the devon cream
was sour and thin which makes me think they used a
sour cream base. That really disapointed me. Also, the
tea sandwiches were very mediocre. Nothing too elegant or special. It was a tuna, a ham, an egg salad,
a pumpkin with cream cheese and a cucumber dill. I
wanted more variety. Lastly, I've never heard of a type of
tea that you cannot put milk into because it causes the
tea to curdle. This was the situation. We choose a
decaf peach tea that you couldn't put milk in. I'm not the
most well versed woman in the tea world but I have
never heard of this and didn't like that.
Would you go back? Sorry, no.

Comments: This is a truly lovely place to visit! Even
sitting on the porch watching the hummingbirds I thought of how soon I could get back again. The tea
choices were wonderful and the huge scones out of this world! Do not
be confused by the "hidden" aspect of Los Rios. You feel as if you are driving right onto the
train tracks because the street runs so close to them. It
is a sleepy, relaxed, beautiful, and delicious place to
spend some time. We finished up with tea sandwiches
and dessert which were scrumptious. I highly recommend you visit this wonderful tea house - I
can't wait to go back!

Comments: Picture yourself driving down a
dusty road behind the railroad station. The train
whistles in the background. You come up to a
vine-covered house with a veranda surrounding it.
People are sitting at tables on the porch,
chatting and drinking tea, probably iced this time
of year. It was warm, but a cool breeze was making
its way up the road. My friends and I all met at
the entrance. Together we all stepped thru a white
rose-covered trellis, and walked up the steps of
Los Rios house, and into another time. The walls
are covered in rich colored wallpapers. The
furniture, many heavy, massive pieces, fill each
room, and display beautiful tea cups. It's cool,
with ceiling fans quietly blowing. We swished our
long skirts inside, and were led by a young man to
a corner room to our table. We each ordered our
own tea: black currant, mango, Queen Catherine,
and vanilla. Quite a variety of tastes. Our
heart-shaped scones arrived with strawberry jam,
and a cream very much on the sour cream side. Tea
was poured and we continued learning about each
other. This is what tea time is for. Talking and
listening, and taking time for each other. Our
sandwiches arrived, each of ours on an individual
plate. Tasty chicken salad, egg salad, ham salad,
and cucumber with a dill flavored cream cheese,
were arranged on the plate with flowers. A small
bowl of fruit was brought with tiny dishes of
brown sugar and fresh cream. These were poured
over the fruit. Heaven. The fruit bowl was a mix
of blueberries, sliced strawberries, kiwi, grapes,
cantaloupe, pineapple, and honeydew. A recipe
worthy of putting into my own recipe book.
Desserts were then served in small wine glasses. A
strawberry trifle, very simple, with a layer of
pound cake on the bottom, flavored with sherry, a
mixture of sliced strawberries and vanilla
pudding, and topped with fresh whipped cream. A
brilliantly colored rosebud of orange and gold had
been stuck into the top of the whipped cream. The
bread pudding was topped with brandy sauce, and a
bright orange flower. The Mamboche, a chocolate
brownie topped with vanilla pudding, hot fudge,
and cream, also topped with a flower. The lemon
tart was a brilliant yellow. All were wonderful
tasting. I usually write more about the tea and
food served, but the Los Rios had a feeling about
it, that the meal was only part of the afternoon.
This tea room had a quiet, resonating atmosphere
that seemed to slow down time. We were there
almost three hours and hadn't even realized it.

Comments: I have been here several times.
This is such a charming tea room. I have had
birthday parties here for myself and for my
friends. You can take the train up, and that's a
lot of fun. First you walk up on this beautiful
tree-lined street, filled with willows and flowery
shrubs. Then go in the little court yard brimming
over with flowers. Up the steps into this 1800s
refurbished landmark. Each room is beautifully
decorated with period antiques. You can also be
served on the veranda which wraps half away around
the house. The food is very good. It is a little
pricey, but well worth it. I was disappointed,
however, when last I was there with a group of
eight women and we were told there was a two-hour
time limit. We would not absolutely need more than
that to enjoy the tea, but to have been put on a
time limit was annoying to everyone. I feel a
little sad about this but I have not hosted a
party there since. I do love this place, it is one
of my favourites ... and I will return again. Just
not in a big group.

Comments: I took my friend from out of
town to this darling tea house in the oldest
inhabited residential area of California near the
San Juan Mission, established in 1776 (famous for
our swallows!). We were met by the very charming
and delightful owner who made us feel tremendously
welcome. We had excellent service from an
ex-student of the elementary school where I teach
who is now attending college. She was attentive in
all senses of the word, but left us to visit as
long as we wished. Interestingly, the owners live
in a restored Victorian behind the tea house. They
had this rare home moved here from across
the street from my elementary school. It is the
old Forster home, the Forsters being one of the
founding families of San Juan. After tea you can
stroll up and down Los Rios street browsing
through the many artisan's shops. For extra fun
you could take the Amtrak and get off at San Juan
Capistrano. It would be just a short walk across
the railroad tracks and up the street. This was a
totally charming day in all respects. My friend
has returned here from out of town twice to share
it with other friends and family. She "does
tea" often, so must be very impressed as
well.

Comments: This is a cute tearoom inside the Huntington

served buffet-style and is all you can eat with a nice
assortment: cheeses, finger sandwiches, fruits, raw veggies,
petite desserts, and each table is given a small basket of mini
scones. The scones were just so-so, but I liked having all you

Comments: I have had tea here in the
Huntington Gardens many times, and find my
experiences to be remarkably consistent. As long
as you don't mind paying to enter the Huntington
Gardens (a huge estate which includes wonderful
artworks, historic library displays, and more),
the tea is an excellent value. The eight or so
varieties of sandwiches (which are wonderful) and
the four or so types of desserts (which are sweet
and rather flavorless) are all-you-can-eat, and
the tea is all you can drink. Along with the
sandwiches and desserts in the central
serve-yourself buffet area are several kinds of
fruit (always including melon), three or four
varieties of crackers, and some very fine cheeses.
The scones are delicious, and are accompanied by
jam and clotted cream -- unfortunately, one only
gets a modest amount of any of these three items.
These, and the tea, are served at your table. I
think the weakest aspect of this tea room is that
one has very few varieties of tea to choose from,
although the tea is good. The service is friendly
and accommodating, but the fact that this tea room
is always packed full (call early for
reservations!) means that your server will not
have a lot of time for you.

Comments: My friend and I had really high
hopes for this tea room. All of the reviews we'd
read had been wonderful. The area around it is on
60 acres of gardens. A rose garden stands beside
the building and fills the air with color. The
building itself couldn't be more elegant. Stepping
inside, we thought we were in for a truly
wonderful treat. But as we ran into another couple
we had made friends with at Rose Tree Cottage,
they warned us it was different.
The main difference was the buffet in the center,
holding all the sandwiches and desserts. All you
can eat. Not too bad. We were seated at a table
with a view of the rose garden that couldn't be
beat. Already a basket of warm orange and currant
scones were waiting for us, each about three
mouthfuls, alongside little bowls of jams and
cream. The tea served was a house afternoon blend.
With milk, it was very soothing. After finishing
up three little scones each, we were told to help
ourselves to the buffet.
When we first sat down, music started playing. It
was a light Mozart. But after that it was popular
music. It was loud enough that people had to start
raising their voices, and my friend and
I had trouble hearing each other. Silverware
started clattering, and it felt like we were in a
cafeteria. It went downhill from there.
I had four choices of sandwiches, chicken
salad, cream cheese with olives, cream cheese with
cheese, cream cheese with basil. Way, way, way,
too much cream cheese. It must have been the
cheapest thing they could make. The chicken salad
was the only one worth eating. There were a few
others but looked entirely unpalatable. The
sandwiches had apparently been chilled, and while
being kept cool in the buffet, they were soggy and
limp. The orange pound cake was very tasty but
dry. I didn't try any other dessert. Our
waitress kept us in tea so no complaints there.
But for a tea room that advertises itself as
serving an English tea, they could use a few
pointers. I don't know if the fast-paced music was
intended to rush everyone through their food
faster and leave sooner, but it worked on us.
This place was a big disappointment. It would be
an absolutely beautiful tea room if they only
corrected two small things: the music and the
sandwiches. I would have been willing to pay more
than the $12.50 if only to get a better quality of
sandwiches, and a little more on the dry side.

Comments: I recently went to the Rose
Garden Tea Room for a friend's bridal shower. The
tea room was small and each table was constantly
filled with patrons, heightening the noise to a
dull roar at some points. The high ceilings,
natural bright light and open architecture made
the noise part of the background that added to the
charm of the intimate environment.
Unanimously, we selected the tea infused with
strawberry. The tea accompaniments included
scrumptious scones with Devonshire cream,
preserves and butter. Only a tablespoon of
Devonshire cream was provided for half the table,
or six ladies. We were too occupied by the other
delectables to think twice about the lack of
Devonshire cream.
In a tasteful buffet style setting, there was a
plethora of finger sandwiches, various cheeses and
crackers, fresh fruit, delicate heart-shaped sugar
cookies and pecan bars. We had to pace ourselves
because one of the ladies in our party brought in
a cake. For anyone planning special events at this
tea room, don't bring a cake! The tea
accompaniments and the delicious pink champagne
cake were too much of a good thing in one day!
I was impressed by the number of male patrons.
Either they were very hungry or the buffet style
made it an attractive alternative, or both. I
can't wait to go back again.

Comments: As a tea lover, and owner of a
tea business, I rarely can get out to enjoy
afternoon tea, but when I do, this is one of my
favorite places. I feel it is the best value in
the LA area, and I never feel rushed to finish my
tea. I have been here quite often, and recommend
it to anyone who would love to take
out-of-towners. The food is always fresh and
plentiful, the tea hot and a good selection, not a
lot, but never taken anyone who was disappointed.
The setting of the Library and Gardens are so

Comments: Reservations are a must and
fill up quick! The tea room overlooks the Rose
Garden at Huntington and is beautiful in the
spring and summer months when the roses are in
full bloom. The tea room is small, but charming.
The tea is wonderful with their house blend
containing a hint of rose. This tea room is buffet
style with many choices of sandwiches, cakes,
cookies, and fruits. Scones are brought to your
table in baskets along with preserves and creams.
After you have tea the Botanical Gardens are a
beautiful way of unwinding before you leave. You
have to pay admission into the Gardens and then
have to pay for the tea separately at the tea
room. This tea room is a little treasure in our
congested world of Los Angeles. Thank you for this
website!

minimal service. We were largely ignored, while we

Comments: If you're looking for a
traditional English teahouse, then this is the
place. This is where you'll find women and men,
sitting quietly by themselves or with a friend or
two, having traditional afternoon tea. It's
charming, quiet, and the perfect spot for friends
to get together and lounge the afternoon away over
tea. With enough good gossip or laughter (as I've
been quite fortunate to have), before you know it
the sky darkens and the tea is gone, as well as
the afternoon. The scones were good, but the
sandwiches and pastries are wonderful! They also
have a full list of English meat pies. People who
work there are very friendly, helpful. I asked if
there was a mailbox near by, and the man behind
the pastry counter told me it was down the street.
I was waiting for a friend and was afraid I'd miss
her. Next thing I know is he told me to leave it
with him, and placed it in his outgoing mail! They
also have a nice section of lovely teapots, cups,
cozies, and all sorts of wonderful things. Not to
mention all the imports of jams, chocolates,
chutneys, mustards, and list goes on and on.
Between all the browsing, nibbling, and relaxing,
I believe an afternoon spent at The Tudor House is
one that leaves you feeling revived and refreshed.

the Tudor House. It is a charming little tea room
with a fine British foodstuffs shop and a small
private room perfect for that ladies' lunch or

The food is standard good British fare. My mom and

High
Tea Cottage, Woodland Hills, CA
Visited: March, 2010. Meal: Royal tea. Type of tea: Loose leaf. Served: In a teapot.
Tea: Excellent. Food: Excellent.
Service: Excellent. Appearance: Excellent.
Comments: Absolutely fabulous., No other Tea Room comes
close in comparison. This is the only place to go for a special
occasion Tea. I have taken many family, friends and business
associates here for Tea and also attended 3 private parties, 2
baby and a bridal shower and they are always the best. The
owner Jenn is lovely she goes way and beyond to make your
visit memorable and enjoyable even so far as to give a lovely
birthday gift to guests who celebrate their birthday at the High
Tea Cottage, now that is class! They offer the best and
freshest food of the finest ingredients with a magnificent selection of fine
china to dine on. Easily the very best!
Would you go back? Yes, can't wait!

Comments: This is probably the best Tea House in North
America, extremely fresh food, excellent selection of loose leaf
premium teas and a collection of fine bone English china not
seen anywhere else. If you are looking for an absolutely perfect
afternoon of High [sic] Tea this is the place for you. We drive
over 200 miles to come to this oasis!
